Chapter 20
CHAPTER20
Sera
Butterflies swirledin my stomach as I hurried through the halls towards the entrance gates. Today, Lily and I were venturing into Wellsprings to search for my wedding dress. In just a few days, I would stand beside Rhys, pledging myself to him for eternity before all the realms. The thought was both terrifying and exhilarating.
My nimble steps faltered briefly as a pang of unease shot through me. Ever since Rhys and I had consecrated our bond privately ahead of the ceremony, an irrational dread sometimes pierced my joy—a sense that cosmic forces continued working against us. The premonition always slipped away swiftly, but its icy touch lingered for hours.
I shook my head, banishing the melancholy mood. Paranoid fantasies would not spoil this day. Lily awaited me eagerly in town, nearly as thrilled for the dress excursion as I secretly was. My pragmatic father had given me an open budget, moved by my radiant joy. I was determined to find a gown as unique as the love that inspired it.
Lost in pleasant daydreams, I rounded a shadowed corner and crashed abruptly into an elegant figure only just visible in the gloom. I stumbled back, stammering apologies until my eyes adjusted and beheld the stern visage of Headmistress Blackthorn. My pulse stuttered—she was the last person I wished to meet today.
“Forgive me, Headmistress, I wasn’t watching my steps,” I offered hastily, dropping my gaze under her piercing one. Sharp scrutiny was her preferred method of keeping unruly pupils in line. I had learned quickly not to court her displeasure.
“Clearly, Miss Silvermist,” she pronounced crisply. “Your thoughts seem... elsewhere of late. I cannot help but notice your attention drifting from the rigors of academia.” Though devoid of open censure, caution edged her words.
I straightened defensively. “My studies have not suffered, Headmistress,” I countered, meeting her stare now. “I may seem distracted, but it’s only joyful anticipation for what is to come. I’m to be married soon.” Surely, even her flinty heart did not condemn something as blameless as young love?
But her expression only grew colder, as though I had unwittingly confirmed a suspicion. “Beware letting personal affairs rule your head, Miss Silvermist. Focus must remain where it belongs—sharpening your gifts through diligent study.” Her thin fingers gripped my shoulder tightly. “You show rare potential, child. I should hate to see it squandered.”
I forced myself not to pull away from her grasp. “Of course. My magic shall always remain a priority,” I replied through numb lips.
Her sharp eyes assessed me a breath longer before releasing me. “See that your promising talents are not eclipsed and lost,” she added dryly. “Sometimes magic may be the only thing that can save our dearest ones in times of gravest peril. And the consequences of failure in those moments may prove irrevocable... perhaps even lethal.”
With that ominous warning, the Headmistress dissolved back into the gloom, leaving me shaken. A chill spread through my veins despite the room’s warmth. I could not afford to dismiss her counsel lightly, no matter how it rankled. There was wisdom etched in the lines of her timeworn face. I must keep honing my mystical abilities, not only for abstract aspirations, but also to protect those I cherished when the need arose. For their sakes, my power could never be allowed to wane…
Hurried footsteps rang down the passage. “There you are!” Lily exclaimed brightly, linking her arm through mine. “We must hurry if we hope to comb every boutique before nightfall.”
As she briskly led me towards the gates, Lily’s excited chatter allowed me to push aside my unease. I would not relinquish this hard-won joy because of one person’s stern warnings, no matter how respected. Rhys was my fate—of that truth, I had never been more certain. Headmistress Blackthorn’s favor paled beside the gift of his steadfast love. I clung fiercely to that conviction as we stepped into the misty morning beyond the academy walls.
Despite lingering disquiet, I felt my mood lifting as Lily and I navigated the bustling cobblestone streets of Wellsprings hand in hand. Her irrepressible enthusiasm was contagious, making each shop window glimmer with potential. I was caught up again in girlish delight at the prospect of uncovering the hidden perfection meant just for me. Rhys would be utterly speechless when I walked down the aisle cloaked in shimmering mystery just for him. The image drew forth a radiant smile.
Lily’s merry laugh broke my romantic daydream. “Ah, there’s that famous glow!” She squeezed my arm fondly. “I feared your worries might eclipse it for a time. But true love conquers all, or so the fairy tales claim!” Mirth sparked in her cornflower eyes. “Now brace yourself, darling—I intend to make those fanciful stories manifest.”
With dramatic flair, she threw open the door to a tiny boutique, a merry bell announcing our arrival. I barely stifled a gasp, enchanted by the explosion of taffeta and tulle within. Lily beamed proudly at my wide-eyed wonder. Despite the nondescript exterior, this shop was a hidden gem brimming with girlish possibility.
Delighted laughter escaped me as Lily pounced, whisking dresses at random into my arms before shoving me behind the curtained alcove to change. Here finally was pure magic untainted by bitter shadows!
The morning passed in a dizzying flurry of colorful silk and foamy lace. Twirling and posing became second nature as Lily appraised each option critically before shaking her head and hurriedly choosing the next. We plowed through gowns of every shape and style imaginable, but none seemed to strike that exquisite chord within me. The glittering confections were lovely indeed—and yet still not the one. I refused to settle, determined to unearth my dream made real.
Near noon, with no options left in the humble shop, Lily agreed to a break for luncheon, though she insisted on continuing our quest through fuller boutiques that afternoon. Willa’s Bridal on the fashionable Dragonsbane Row was her suggested next stop. Fortified by tea and finger sandwiches, I allowed her to tug me insistently down the elegant avenue without a whisper of protest. My earlier malaise had melted away entirely beneath the comfortable rhythms of our friendship. Lily reminded me to take joy in the journey, not just the destination.
The tinkling bell over Willa’s gleaming door carried cheer and promise. Lily and I stepped inside this haven reverently, eyes wide at the overwhelmingly prismatic choices everywhere. Floor-to-ceiling gowns in every silhouette and style surrounded us in a fairytale forest. This shop was a world away from our quaint morning boutique. Here lay dreams limited only by imagination’s bounds.
A matronly attendant bustled over, her gentle face crinkling into a smile. “Welcome, my dears. How may I help you find something special today?”
Lily nudged me forward eagerly. “Her wedding is in five days, so we need the ideal gown, stat!” Her matter-of-fact tone belied the moment’s significance.
I blinked back sudden moisture. My friend understood how deeply this decision weighed on me. I would find my true match here—fate itself seemed to whisper confirmation.
The kindly attendant, who introduced herself as Margery, clasped her hands delightedly. “Oh, how perfectly romantic! Let us waste no more time.” With brisk kindness, she began selecting gowns, mumbling occasionally to herself as she assessed my curvaceous frame. I stared after her graceful form, hope and nerves churning restlessly. Somehow, I knew my path would clarify at last in this place.
Soon, I was ensconced behind plush drapes in the circular dressing room, gowns suspended like liquid light all around. Lily waited just beyond, nearly vibrating with anticipation. “Get ready for the debut, my darling debutante!” she trilled dramatically, eliciting soft laughter from the attendant. Their playful camaraderie eased any lingering self-consciousness in me. I was ready to unveil each possibility without reserve.
The first few contenders evoked appreciative sounds, but no earth-shattering revelations. Ivory silks and frothy organza were dazzling indeed, but failed to resonate that elusive inner chord I waited for. Polite clapping greeted each twist and turn. But still, I held myself apart, searching for the sign that never came.
“Shall we try something a little different next?” Margery suggested kindly, reading my wistfulness accurately. Soon, I stood assessing my reflection in ebony lace embroidered subtly with iris blossoms along the plunging back. Its dramatic allure felt tempting, but ultimately too forceful.
So the afternoon progressed in a merry parade of possibilities, some exquisite, but none ringing that ethereal bell within. As sunset gilded the leaded windows, I felt discouragement sinking insidious claws once more. Cecile, the shop’s owner herself, emerged from a curtained workroom to aid the search. But still, no contender emerged worthy of sealing my fated union.
Just as failure threatened to eclipse the day’s joy completely, Cecile clapped her delicate hands, eyes sparkling. “I know just the thing—if the lady will allow one last indulgence,” she said playfully. I nodded in mute desperation, afraid to rekindle frail hope. But her delight could not be false. Excusing herself, Cecile slipped into the back room on a mysterious quest.
Moments later, she emerged cradling a gown veiled loosely in snowy muslin. My pulse inexplicably quickened just beholding its obscured shape. With reverent care, she lifted the concealing cloth away, allowing the creation to materialize gradually like liquid moonlight. As if handling a precious artifact, Cecile tenderly slipped the luminous creation onto a nearby mannequin. I caught my breath, lost suddenly in a luminous dream.
No elaborate beadwork or dramatic silhouette was needed for this gown’s impact. Its elegance lay in utter simplicity—lustrous silk that rippled gracefully to the floor with the lightest movement. The slim bodice was ruched subtly at the waist before flowing outward into a diaphanous train that floated ethereally around the mannequin’s frozen form. Sheer cap sleeves showed hints of skin, imbuing the divine fabric with light intimacy. And scattered across the gossamer skirt, tiny crystals reflected rainbows that shifted entrancingly with each step and turn. Their subtle radiance evoked memories of my beloved city lights. Rhys’ handsome face materialized in my mind’s eye as naturally as though I had conjured him.
Somehow, I simply knew with bone-deep certainty—this was the gown. Its graceful spirit called directly to my own, forging that long-sought inner resonance. I could picture nothing more perfectly suited to our unconventional union of light and dark. In this raiment, I would shine as Rhys’ one true partner, standing serenely beside him at the altar.
With tears blurring my vision, I turned wordlessly to Lily. Her own eyes glistened, reading my profound recognition. No verbal confirmation was needed. At long last, our quest was complete. Against the gathering dark, we had found the pearl of great price.
The following hours passed in a blissful blur. I surrendered my fragile form over to seamstress measurements and pinned alterations, heedless now of any prodding or discomfort. My spirit remained wrapped in gossamer wings, impatient to take flight at last. The future gleamed, blindingly bright and crystal, for one brilliant heartbeat. Then practicality reasserted itself. Much remained to be done before my beautiful vision materialized fully.
Dusk was falling by the time we left Willa’s behind at last, my treasured dress swathed safely in muslin and lace paper. Lily kept up a stream of effusive praise as we strolled the lamplit avenues back towards home. But I was only half listening as anticipation roiled inside me. Soon, I would stand resplendent beside my love at long last.
But as the academy’s shadowed spires pierced the horizon, I felt a resurgence of strange melancholy I could not rationally place. Something about this beacon of earlier joy and possibility coming into view reawoke smothered apprehensions I had battled all day. Perhaps in these halls of learning, mundane concerns inevitably diluted young love’s extraordinary power.
Lily sensed the shift in my reflective silence. “You’ll outshine every star commanded to bless your day,” she pronounced fiercely, as though reading my thoughts. “No one who matters can doubt what lies between you now.”
I blinked back my melancholy to trace a tremulous smile. “You always see straight to the heart of things, my friend. Your clarity is a gift.” Impulsively, I pulled her into a heartfelt embrace right there beneath the iron gates.
Lily returned my sudden hug just as tightly. Together, we turned to climb the steps back into daily routines and trivial demands. But our hearts yet soared from the day’s secret glories.
I readied myself for bed that night, still cradled in joyful purpose. The mysterious forces the Headmistress had invoked now seemed impossibly remote from my shining circle. Love had triumphed over doubt at every crossroads. And soon its ultimate victory would be enacted before gathering witnesses.
My betrothed and I would be bound, inextricably conjoined through this life and all yet to come. I fell asleep still picturing myself wreathed in ethereal silk and moonbeams, pledging my soul to the noble man fate had crafted just for me. Reality could surely never match such resplendence. And yet, I had found the living embodiment of that fairy gown today. Some divine hand guided my steps through the hazardous thicket towards eternal joy.
