Epilogue
The semester was zipping along by the time we got our new room assignment at the end of the hallway. It wasn't much bigger than the other one, but we'd take what we could get and, after all, wasn't being together what mattered?
It totally was. Stevie still joined us for meals most of the time and we had plenty of girl chats. She was glad for me and all the positive changes in my life, but it had to be a sore spot that none of hers had happened yet. Maybe not…but wouldn't it be nice if she could join the class for runs in the wildlife park on weekend nights? If maybe there was a mate out there for her too? I vowed to help my friend any way I could to find her own happiness.
"Minx, mail for you at the front office." The girl who approached me wasn't someone I knew except by face. We didn't have any classes together.
"Snail mail?" I rolled my eyes.
"I know. I thought that went out with the dinosaurs." We laughed together, and she went on her way.
Glancing at my phone, I saw I had enough time before my next class if I hurried, so I did. Arriving at the secretary's desk, out of breath. "Mail for me?"
The woman nodded at an envelope on the corner of the desk. "Right there."
"Thanks." I reached for it, but someone cleared her throat behind me, and I turned to see a girl with long dark hair falling past her shoulders. "Do I know you?"
"No. At least I don't think we've ever met." She smiled, her lips trembling a little. "There's no need to open that letter. It's from me."
"What? Why did you mail me a letter and then show up here too?"
"I'm a new student. I've been looking for you for a long time though."
"For me? Why?"
"Because I think I'm your sister. My name is Ava."
