Chapter 14: A few days later: The reason for the vendetta
CHAPTER 14
MIKI
A FEW DAYS LATER – THE REASON FOR THE VENDETTA
M arko had come up with more information on Mathieson and we'd been monitoring the bugger since. I now knew exactly who he was and his link to my family.
The reason behind his vendetta with my family was simple; my father had been the one behind his father's downfall.
Why he had also targeted Glowacki, we still hadn't found out. It might simply have been because of our alliance, but no doubt all would be revealed, eventually.
When we'd moved to the UK, and my dad tried to establish himself as pakhan here, he had trouble with a local gang funded by a corrupt banker. As the banker was so prominent, instead of having him killed, my dad anonymously ensured that the local police discovered evidence of his corporate corruption. He'd later been jailed for fraud and embezzlement around twenty years ago and had committed suicide in jail.
Aiden Mathieson, also known as Simon Aiden Hughes, was the banker's son.
After the scandal of his father's incarceration, Simon, his mother, and sixteen-year-old sister had left London and changed their names to Mathieson to escape the paparazzi.
They had gone from being a wealthy family to barely getting by. His mother suffered from depression after that and eventually she took her own life too, leaving Mathieson to look after his sister while working and studying law. At some point, he had obviously found out about my dad's involvement and held a grudge.
In other circumstances, I would probably have felt sorry for Mathieson. He and his family were collateral damage in a war neither of us was a part of.
However, my father was dead now and instead of Mathieson's grudge dying with him, he'd transferred it to the rest of my family. And for that, there was no excuse.
The worst thing was, he had given the go-ahead to kill my beautiful sister. A woman innocent of any wrongdoing and undeserving of his ire or the suffering he inadvertently caused.
Of course, the arseholes who murdered her might have done so anyway, but Mathieson ensured it. Any possibility of sympathy died with that thought.
The fucker should have let bygones be bygones and left us the hell alone. My hands itched to do the guy some damage, and I growled in frustration.
It pissed me off I had to wait, but, like his father before him, he was too prominent a figure to just kill. And like my father before me, I needed to come up with a plan for his demise that didn't come back to haunt me.
There was no way I would risk his death causing any more suffering for me or mine.
So, I'd wait, and I'd plan. Then when the time came to deal with him, I'd make sure he suffered dearly for every one of his crimes against us, but especially for Krissa's death.
Of course, in order to do that, I needed to formulate my plan. I was usually good at that, but I was currently finding it difficult, as I kept getting distracted by one sexy little police detective. Little Miss Red was proving to be more than a passing fancy.
It had been a few days since we'd been together, but she was never far from my mind. Like a phantom, she haunted my dreams, and every waking moment was filled with thoughts of her. No matter how I tried, I could not get her out of my head.
Every time she entered my mind, my body reacted with lust. It was driving me mad. My bloody cock had remained at half mast as if in mourning of her pussy since I'd left her bedroom and no matter how I tried, no amount of DIY could fix the problem.
There was no denying it. I had to see her again.
It didn't matter that she was a police officer and an enemy. My heart wanted her, my cock wanted her, and my whole bloody being screamed for her.
I wanted her more than I'd ever wanted anything in my life. I had to have her!
My mind was consumed with thoughts about how to make her my own, so much so, I could think of nothing else.
Making her mine was the only way I would remain sane and the only way I could stop being so bloody distracted by her. If she belonged to me, and I belonged to her, then I knew I'd be finally able to focus again.
That would be a hard thing to achieve. But I had to believe it wasn't impossible.
Marko had done a lot of digging, and we found out that her boss, Detective Chief Constable Roy Allen, had been Eilidh's dad's best friend and partner at the time of his death.
Jim MacArthur had already informed us the guy was corrupt, but Marko had also found out about a few others in her department. They'd all been taking bribes from Mathieson for years. That was obviously how he'd kept most of the Thomas gang and many others out of jail.
Naturally, I knew all about corrupt police, as we had several on our payroll, but I hated them even though they were vital to keeping my family and business safe. Anyone who would sell out their family, friends, and morals for money was the lowest of the low, in my opinion. So, I naturally hated Roy Allen and his team of corrupt officers.
The fact they were Eilidh's colleagues made me hate them more.
Not only were they on the take, but apparently they were blackmailing several prestigious people. That was a very dangerous game to play and one I was well versed in myself. However, when I played that game, it was in order to protect my family from harm and not simply for personal gain.
Yes, I was a bad man who did bad things, but I did them with a moral code of ethics that guys like these didn't have.
My Little Miss Red was working with these men, and that worried the hell out of me. Even worse, if Mathieson had killed Eilidh's dad as she suspected, then they might have been involved. If any of them discovered she was investigating Mathieson, who knew what they would do?
My heart pounded, and my stomach churned at the thought of Eilidh coming to harm.
It didn't help that our surveillance of her uncovered the fact that she was not just investigating Mathieson as she had told me, but was also looking into her colleagues.
She'd been following them whenever she could and had watched as they met with several unsavoury characters from the Thomas gang, among others.
I was so terrified she would get caught; my body literally broke out in a cold sweat every time I thought about it.
My sexy detective was good at what she did, but she was alone, and these men were not stupid. It was only a matter of time before her activities were discovered. She needed to be kept safe.
That was why I had brought up a couple of our men from London and had them, or Vlad, following her.
My plan wasn't developed, but my mind was made up. I'd deal with these men for her and bring them to justice for what they had done to her dad. I wasn't sure how to do that yet and still get Mathieson for myself, but I would figure something out.
Then, when all of this was over, I'd contact her and attempt to woo her away from the police and into my life.
Again, I didn't know how I was going to do that or if my attempts would be in any way successful, but my feelings for her ran too deep not to try. In the meantime, she would be looked after by my men.
Despite my worries for Eilidh, as the morning wore on, I attempted to focus on my discussions with Jim MacArthur and various phone calls to my Uncle Maxim and Cousin Viktor as we sorted out the re-routing of our drug trafficking route. It took a lot of planning and was a logistical nightmare to set up initially, but now we had things figured out to everyone's satisfaction. I was happy about that, but completely worn out.
Giving in to my exhaustion, I told the guys I was going for a nap to get some peace. When I was alone in my room, I pulled up the footage of Eilidh's house. All was quiet there, but I had expected that as she had returned to work today. Marko had checked her shift pattern, so I knew she was on day shift and wasn't due to finish work for another hour at least.
However, I liked to monitor things in Eilidh's absence. She had an excellent security system, but it wasn't good enough. If I could break in, someone else could. Okay, it had taken the help of Marko to do it, but I wasn't the only one with a hacker at my disposal and with all the danger she had put herself in with this investigation of hers, I wasn't taking any chances.
Marko was monitoring all communications in and out of the station to ensure that we knew where she was at all times, and Vlad was on her tail today, so I knew she would be fine. If anything concerning happened, they'd soon let me know.
Having put my mind at ease that she was still safe, I settled on the bed for a badly needed rest and closed my eyes. With a smile on my face, I drifted off to sleep quickly, dreaming about long curly red hair fisted in my hands as I thrust into a sexy little police detective.
