21. Taylen

Chapter 21

Taylen

I fly through the air, keeping a distance, transporting in the night, following the vampire murderer into the dark abyss. Even far behind, he must feel me chasing him. Probably so intent on getting where he's going that he doesn't take time to deal with me, hoping that the long journey will be too much. The evil bastard couldn't be more wrong. It just strengthens my resolve to slay the beast who has downed two of our own and left them to die.

The minute I realize where we're going, my chest begins to pound. The Roman consulate for the vampire masters is straight ahead, and every single one of our masters is convened at the very same time and the very same place, something they have not done in quite some time after being attacked. The blood in my veins races with unparalleled fear.

I know exactly what the fucker is intending to do, and it's up to me to stop him. I can only hope that my connection with Lucianna and Slobozia is as clear as it's been up to now. That through our telekinetic bond, a bond all purebloods can evoke, that they'll feel the trouble and alert the others. I draw my sword, and dive after the villain cloaked by his cape and the darkness of the sky, the shadows painting indiscernible patterns around him as though evil is trying to blur the countenance of his face. But the minute he turns, just a hair to the left, I recognize him instantly, and know exactly why, time after time, the rogues were always one step ahead.

He feels me swooshing through the air, my sword ready to take him out, with stakes tucked into my side belt on the ready, but the well-trained combat fighter is not going down without a fight now that I've charged. He turns, streaking toward me through the air, his own sword drawn in a moment and raised, ready to do battle, soldier to soldier in a combat that will test our skills.

"Traitor," I yell, circling high in the darkness.

Silver laughs, deep and cynical. "And it was so easy," he sneers. "Hand-picked to be part of the secret team. The hard part was making sure no one guessed the leaking of secrets was coming from me. And once I kill you and the masters, no one will ever be the wiser, stupid girl."

I lunge, racing through the air, slashing a piece of Silver with my sword as he darts away, barely injured, and still filled with fight. He lashes out, throwing me momentarily off guard with his quick recovery, but I'm not without speed and use it to get away, circling him, both at an even standoff but ready to fight to the death for our own life-preserving cause.

The only thing I can think of is getting him away from that consulate where all the secrets, all the strategies and all the protection for the rest of the vampires across the land are held in the minds of those who gather in the dome-shaped building below.

I fly away from the consulate, hoping against hope the bait will work. He hesitates for a beat but then takes chase, giving me the time I need, the precious time that may be the only thing to keep the masters safe.

I focus hard, my energy to communicate weakened by the flight, but Slobozia has to hear me, he has to. Yet he doesn't, no one comes, and Silver is drawing near. I focus again, afraid that after how I ended us, he's shut down the path of communication forever. I wouldn't blame him, but still, I have to try. Slobozia, Silver is a traitor. Here at the consulate. In the sky. Will hold him off, get the masters out. It's all I can manage, all the energy I can expend, if I'm to fend off the battle of the swords heading toward me now at breakneck speed and save the masters from a devious and vengeful end. Instead of dying at the hands of the traitor.

But Silver flies fast, closing the distance between us, leaving no doubt in my mind that he is ready to take me out and get back to his business at hand, wiping out the masters. My long sword is drawn in my right hand, with my trusty dagger still in the left. The minute he comes close, I soar into the air and spin, causing Silver to do exactly as he should, give chase. But it's that instinct that fails him now, because while he's charging full speed, I stop and turn, wielding the long arc of my sword and slicing the monster deep across the arms and chest.

His fangs descend and his eyes redden as he howls in pain. "Bitch!"

I eye him carefully, awaiting his next move while trying to garner time before he strikes and hoping to gain just a fragment of energy back before I have to attack again. But even if it kills me, I will keep taking jabs at him, keep slicing him a little bit at a time or with one well-placed blow to keep him from hurting the masters.

He recovers faster than I had hoped, but it's enough time to get my breathing back in sync and focus on the deviant bastard in front of me. His eyes flash bright red though, and a mental note of some of his moves in the past, when we thought he was fighting for the vampires, but really was a traitor in our midst, float through my mind. If he's going to light something on fire with those eyes, better on me than on that building, better that I'm the sacrifice and that our world can go on.

I swallow hard when he charges, those heated eyes ready to do their worst in the darkness of the night.
