16. Myles
Chapter sixteen
Myles
Watching her walk through that door without looking back had Myles questioning if it was the best decision to let her go. Most females would have dropped to their knees and begged to explain why they were rejected. Not her. Luna took this young, powerful future as a badge of honor and walked out the door. Not one look of regret. Not one hint that she wanted to work on things. She just told him not to speak of this to anyone and left.
Who is this girl?
His job was to know each Alpha of the packs, who their Luna was, and their offspring. He knew he had a daughter named Remy who would be the Luna of the pack someday. He didn’t think she carried her aura of power and was unafraid to use it. Not only did she command attention in the room, like any typical Alpha or Luna with a strong enough power level, but she also spoke her mind when she thought something was wrong. That took a lot of guts because the packs have been losing control of their beasts.
Should I have stopped her from walking out that door?
That question was going to haunt him for quite some time. Myles knew the kind of mate he wanted. Remy checked all the boxes: emotional, mental, and physical strength, the ability not to make rash decisions, and caring for her people. The last thing he wanted was someone he would have to care for. That is a distraction, especially on the battlefield.
And battles were approaching fast.
But I can’t have a mate that is with another. How would that look? How is that even possible?!
Fated mates were something to cherish. That was someone the Moon Goddess designed explicitly for another. He had seen many paired with their Fated Mate all his life. It was a beautiful thing to witness. Every time he had seen it happen before him, it was as if the world fell away, and they were the only people in the room. They would always have a look of astonishment on their faces at first and then pure love.
That wasn’t like what he experienced with Remy.
He wasn’t sure when, but he must have touched her at that party. That was how Lycans were able to find their Fated Mate. Once they briefly touched, the connection would be forged. As he replayed the events of that party, he tried to recall when he would have touched her. There was one moment that would make sense. When those rogues came into the territory. The whole room broke out into chaos. Many pack members ran toward their homes to check on their children or were too weak to fight against those who invaded. Everyone was bumping into others to get out of the room, so that could be when they touched.
The bond was forged, but he would not ask Lykos for an extension on their stay to figure out who. After their fight in the hallway, Lykos wouldn’t have been kind to that request. That was his first mistake. Allowing his anger to get the best of him that night was why Remy walked out that door. She had been a witness to it and saw him losing control of himself. If he hadn’t allowed that to happen, he would have been able to request to stay and meet with every non-mated woman in the pack. Myles would have been able to meet Remy before she met the other, and he would have had her to himself.
I saw him in the crowd unless he met her there, too.
He let out an exasperated sigh and leaned back in his chair. The speculation of the entire situation would drive him mad if he didn’t get a grip on himself. A knock on his door brought him out of his thoughts, and he told them to come in. Asher poked his head inside with his eyebrows raised. That was usually the signal that Myles allowed his mood to seep into the pack bonds. It was never a good idea for Lycans to feel the weight of their Alpha’s burden. That would make them rush to assist him or make the enthusiastic ones think they could challenge him. Neither option sounded like a good idea right now, so Myles shut down his portion of the bond so no one else would notice his prissy mood.
"Girl trouble?"
Myles grunted. "I doubt you read that through the bond."
Asher laughed as he stepped inside the room and shut the door behind him. "No. I deduced that something was off from that young Luna walking out your door and then the weight of your anger in the bonds. Did she do something to piss you off?"
It was difficult to know what to tell his Beta. Did he want to explain that she was his mate and break the silent agreement with Remy to talk about it? Their bond was severed, so she would have no way to find out unless Asher went after her and told her what Myles told him.
"She was fated to me. I smelled another on her. I won’t be sharing with another. I rejected her."
Asher lifted an eyebrow at him. "You rejected your Fated Mate?"
Myles nodded while staring at the wall. Now that he said it out loud, he understood why Asher was confused. It was stupid to reject a Fated Mate. It made the pack bonds stronger; it made the pack less agitated. Having a Fated Mate as an Alpha meant a lot. It was a blessing from the Moon Goddess, and he rejected it.
But I did it for a reason.
"I think you forgot. I said she smelled like another. She is close to completing a bond with another Alpha."
Asher walked in and sat down in the chair Remy vacated. He kept his confused look but had a hint of a smile behind it. Asher was like that. He was generally a laid-back, kind person. Unless he was royally pissed off. Right now, it amused him to see his Alpha and friend annoyed. It must have amused him even more to know a girl was behind it.
"So, your Fated Mate walked through that door and smelled of another Alpha, so you rejected her? Fated trumps Chosen, my friend, in case you forgot that tidbit."
Myles grunted at him. "It was another Fated bond."
Both eyebrows were in the center of his forehead now. "That’s not possible."
"That’s what I said." Myles said with a groan. "I don’t know what the Moon Goddess is playing here, but she allowed a female to have two fated mates. That is unheard of."
Asher looked down at the desk so the Lycan inside of Myles wouldn’t think Asher was challenging him. Lycans could easily take eye contact as a challenge if it is held for too long. The information transfixed Asher, and they nearly forgot about that. But he was also looking around as if an idea were running through his head. Did he know how Remy would be given multiple mates? Myles wouldn’t put it past him. Asher has been around for some time. He would know more than Myles about this kind of thing.
"She is an Alpha herself, right?"
"Yes, but no other Alpha female has been given multiple mates as far as I am aware."
"What if she is special?"
Myles lifted his eyebrow this time. "What do you mean?"
Asher looked at the map of the five kingdoms. Myles looked over as well, but the answer to his question wasn’t there from what he could see.
"Have you heard about the Dragon Kingdom now being ruled by a Plasma Dragon?"
"What is a Plasma Dragon?"
Asher shook his head. "A Dragon type that was thought to be extinct has now made its debut again. A young woman around Luna’s age emerged as a Plasma. A Plasma tends to have five mates, one for each dragon type. She recently has taken over the kingdom."
"Gemar is gone? What happened there?"
That was certainly news to him. Myles did his best to keep up with the issues within the other kingdoms. It wasn’t a known issue for the different kingdoms to mingle with others except if they were looking for work. Gemar was ruthless and ruled his people well from what he understood. There was never a civil war under his rule, which was at least a sign of competency.
"The new Queen killed him after he lost control of his people. She and her five consorts rule that kingdom now."
Five? Five mates?
"Because she was a Plasma, does she have five mates?"
Asher shrugged his shoulders. "That’s what I’ve heard. Something about being a Plasma apparently required her to have five. Maybe that is the same case for Remy Howell. Is she a special Lycan?"
Myles followed what Asher was telling him now. If this new Dragon Queen was a special type of dragon that resulted in her having five mates, maybe that is why Remy had multiple. The problem was that he wasn’t sure if there was a special Lycan.
"If she is, Lykos and Tala haven’t disclosed it. She didn’t mention being one while she was here. I just smelled another on her, and I am not going to share my damn mate. The Goddess gave her to me. Why am I supposed to share her with another?"
Asher shook his head, "Because she was made for you? I’m not sure why you would reject her over that. She didn’t choose it. The Goddess did."
Myles stared at his friend. He didn’t think of it like that. If Remy was fated to multiple people, she didn’t have control over that. No one did. If the Goddess wanted Remy to have more than just him as a mate, Remy wouldn’t have had a say in the matter. She met Chase, and things must have played out for them to get that close to completing the bond. She wasn’t willing to reject him because the bond was nurtured.
She walked out that door because she knew she had someone who cherished the bond already, and it was your loss.
I’m realizing that.
You’re stupid.
I know.
Myles put his head in his head and rubbed his face. "I fucked up."
Asher laughed. "Looks like you did, my friend."
"She is moving on to other territories. I don’t even know which one she’s headed for. Lykos would rather die than divulge that information."
"Well, you weren’t the best at negotiating while they were here."
Myles growled. "Don’t remind me. Having her in that room was distracting. My Lycan just wanted to jump over the table and mark her."
"That wouldn’t have gone over well."
"No shit, that’s why I didn’t do it."
"Maybe follow the bond to her?"
Myles shook her head. "Not possible now that it is severed."
"Well, aren’t you up shit creek."
Myles glared at his friend. "You are not helpful."
He threw his hands up in surrender again. "I’m just calling it like it is. I doubt it’ll be the only run-in with her. When the time comes, use it to your advantage. Or go to the island and bring her back here."
"The island is no more. That Dragon Queen destroyed the barrier, apparently. People can come back any time they want."
Asher frowned at him. "Sometimes those people should stay there. I know some were sent there for the greater good. If they can come back, that’s not necessarily a good thing."
"I guess we will cross that bridge if we get there."
"It might come sooner than you think. We need to prepare the pack. I already called them in for a meeting. They should at least know we are going to receive some shipments of supplies. I bumped into Lykos and Bryan while you talked to Remy. Lykos said to send a list of things we could use to his address, and his people will put together the first order."
"Good. Thank you for doing that."
"Welcome. Need any help with the meeting?"
Myles thought about it. The meeting should be quick and painless. Most of the males in the pack came to the meetings and allowed the females to tend to the children. If they didn’t know what was needed for their family, he could tell them to go home and ask so the order would get put together swiftly. Asher didn’t help with that.
"No. Just tell everyone to get a list of supplies we could use and have those lists to us by tomorrow morning."
"Sounds good." Asher stood from the chair and glanced his way. "What are you going to do now?"
"I’m going to track down my mate and figure out how to get her back."
