Chapter Six

I ’ve only met Mr. Holt’s boss once when he visited. It was then that he asked me to fill the position of the district industrial engineer temporarily, knowing that I am a technical support engineer. He asked and I quote, “what’s the difference?” In short, I responded, “money.” I dial my boss’s boss number over chat, he answers after the second ring.

“Enya, how goes it?”

Good morning Mr. Grant. Everything is good until the email regarding Mr. Holt’s untimely absence graced our mailboxes about fifteen minutes ago.

“Well it is unfortunate, and I’m sure you and your team can handle things during this time.”

“May I ask is Mr. Holt is okay?”

“Barrett is fine, and as I can’t share pertinent information, I will inform you all after the board has met, and decisions are made.”

“Sir, what decisions,” I ask to gain more insight of what’s going on.

“In short Enya, there has been a breach and I need for you and your team to restore the systems we lost during the migration. What I don’t understand is after your team installed the new systems, why wasn’t your team assigned the migration? And who performs a migration during a storm? Enya, I need for you to take the lead on this.”

“Mr. Holt asked me to shadow Julian Furey on this.”

“That’s correct, that slipped my mind. How are you settling in Julian?

“I’m learning, it’s a good fit.”

“Good, can you two share the responsibility?”

“That was our plan Mr. Grant,” Julian answers. My attention is focused on Julian as he speaks. I’m unsure of the control at the moment. “We will need to get approvals pushed through as soon as possible.”

“Are you referring to the planning schedule?”

“Yes sir, the schedule has been completed. We were conducting a meeting to go over it.” I respond reverting the conversation back to me. Julian’s posture changes, he went from confident to reserve in seconds. I feel a way, and I’m not sure why though.

After the meeting with Mr. Grant we complete the schedule plan and send the email with the changes for approvals. As the meeting with the team ended Shontae signaled for me to meet her in my office. I gathered my belongings and headed for my office, but Julian stopped me in the hallway.

“Hey, can we meet for a minute? I have something to speak to you about.”

“Yes, but can it wait? Shontae just scheduled a meeting with me, and I’m sure she’s waiting in my office with an attitude.”

“Oh wow, yeah. I guess I can wait. The situation isn’t going anywhere.”

Assuming Julian’s speaking about the outage. I nod agreeing with him. “Not until the team resolve’s it.” Julian stares at me with the look that I believe has become his signature stare. Any eyebrow raised, and an expression of uncertainty.

“You really have no clue, do you?”

“No clue about what Julian?”

Correction 1: “What just happened in the meeting?”

“What just happened in the meeting that I wasn’t aware of, Julian?”

“Seriously Enya, you don’t see what you did as unprofessional and petty?”

“Petty?” Wait what are you talking about?”

“Never mind, I’ll schedule a meeting so that we have time to discuss this matter.”

“What matter, Julian?” He walks off like we weren’t just talking, with his hands in his pockets revealing his tight ass. “What the hell?”
