Ava

AVA

All night long, I think about TalmadgeRand. That’s one very, very good-looking man going to waste up there on that mountain.

I don’t get up until around ten, and even then, I want to go back to bed. After I shower, I look for clothes to wear and throw on something. By the time I get to the diner across the street, it’s after eleven and the lunch crowd is starting to come in. My phone rings just as my food is set on the table. “Morrow.”

“Hey, it’s Lee. I need to talk to you.”

“I’m at the diner. Come on over.”

“Okay. Be right there.”

He wasn’t kidding. In less than five minutes, he slides into the seat across from me. “We’ve got another one,” he whispers.

“Another kid?”

“Yeah. Bobby Cochran.”

Bobby… “Wouldn’t be redheaded and green-eyed, would he?”

“You know him?”

“Yeah. Talked to him the other day. Some other kids identified him as Cameron’s friend, but he was shifty when I asked him about Cameron and the other kids. I was about to ask for names of other friends of Cameron when Bobby told me they didn’t know anything either, which I thought was odd.”

Once we both finish eating and we’re back outside, Lee wipes a hand across his forehead and sighs. “I really don’t know what to make of this.”

“Me either.” But something about what he said stuck in my brain. And I know who I want to ask about it.
