CHAPTER FIVE

GARRETT

I stopped running. We were currently standing on a cluster of roofs to avoid running through the water below us. Most of the small town was still flooded. Being higher helped my sense of smell as well as kept us from drawing attention to us below. Humans could do what we were doing. Maybe not as agilely or as quickly, but we were not doing anything that would indicate we were more than human.

Rodger halted next to me. “What is it?”

I held up a finger, begging him for silence. Odette?

Yes! Yes! We’re here!

I nearly sagged with relief. My mate was alive. I must have at least swayed on my feet because Rodger suddenly took hold of my arm to help balance me.

Where are you? I asked her. Is your daughter okay?

My niece, and yes she’s fine. We’re both cold and hungry, but we’re uninjured.

Niece? I thought back to the young couple I’d seen next to the Alpha male. That must be the parents.

“They’re uninjured,” I relayed back to Rodger, Dameon, and Ethan.

Ethan looked relieved. “Amelia too?”

That must be the niece’s name. I nodded to Ethan before asking again, Where are you?

Tunnel under my dad’s shop. Is he there? Is he okay?

I admired my mate for her compassion but now was not the time for her to be concentrating on others. Except, I found myself unable to lie to her. There was an explosion at a gas station. Most of the humans’ efforts are being directed there. Your father was injured. We left him behind with your skulk to be healed by our witch .

The fact that her father needed to be healed instead of healing on his own was explanation enough of the extent of his injuries. I could hear the worry in her thoughts as she said, I appreciate that. We don’t have a witch within our territory.

I turned to Ethan. Not wanting to ignore my mate but also needing to get to her. “She says they’re in a tunnel under her dad’s shop. Do you know what that means?”

The male nodded once and then set off running again. We followed swiftly behind him.

We’re on our way. I assume you’re trapped or you would have gotten out by now. Tell me everything I need to know to get to you.

I will. But first…can you tell me your name?
