Ryker lifted her from his lap and deposited her back onto the table. He propped Ruby’s legs onto his shoulders and placed his lips at one of her ankles. He placed soft, open-mouthed kisses down the length of her calf. As her leg bent at the knee, she thought he would stop there. That entire experience was completely different than with Tyson. Ryker took his time, being a patient hunter, and made sure to make Ruby feel loved, cherished, wanted, and his. Ruby’s heart swelled as she pointed out to herself that this time was different. Ryker may have tried to fight the bond at first, but he never planned to reject it. Ryker’s hands held her face between them, and he kissed her tenderly like he was trying to savor it. “I love you, too, Ruby.”

Ruby’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of those words. Ryker must have caught it because his head tilted in confusion. “Did you doubt that I did?”

Ruby bowed her head in guilt. “I was rejected before, remember?”

Ryker growled fiercely. “And he was a fucking idiot.” Ryker lifted her chin to make her look at him again. “There was never a moment that I ever thought to do that to you. I’m sorry that I ignored it before. I was stupid to do that. I was afraid of it at first.” Ryker took a deep breath. “I didn’t think I was good enough once either. That’s why I left that world and started over here. And I was terrified that I would do something stupid to lose this, too. Then you showed up, and it only made my fear increase. I know Tyson is trying to find me. I am a threat to his throne with me being alive. And with you here, that was something else I could possibly lose.”

Ruby nodded, “I understand.”

“Do you?”

Ruby looked at him with her head tilted. “It’s straightforward to me.”

“I don’t think it is. With you being my mate, I am going to want to protect you first, which is something I can’t help, but also something I don’t think is fair. I made this a sanctuary instead of just a Rogue territory. These people count on me. Even though we aren’t an official pack, they are basically my new pack.”

Ruby narrowed her eyes at Ryker. She remembered what Nick had told her and realized she had yet to confront him about it. “But you do have a pack, don’t you? You have one with Nick, Tasha, Deacon and the rest of your employees.”

Ryker raised his eyebrows in shock. “I didn’t know you knew about that.”

Ruby growled in anger. “Now that we are mated, when did you plan on telling me?”

Ryker blinked a few times. “After I was through with pleasuring you?”

Why aren’t you siding with me?

Ryker nodded in agreement. “You are actually right about that. I’ve treated you like you were some pathetic she-wolf. You’re not. You are my equal, and I need to accept that and treat you as such.”

It was Ruby’s turn to blink in astonishment. “That was easier than I thought it was going to be.”

“Well, you are mine now, officially. I have no reason to believe that you aren’t capable of handling yourself. The Goddess gave me a She-Alpha in her own right. That alone should make me treat you differently.”

Ruby smiled and kissed Ryker. Not once had a dominant male ever admitted these kinds of things. It made her love him just a little more knowing that he was willing to change his perception and treat her like the equal that she was to him.
