Chapter Four~Derek

I have been at the safe house with Amber for a while now and I can’t deny the things I feel for her. It’s been a struggle for me to keep my hands to myself and I’ve been fighting the guilt I feel over it. I know deep down that my wife would want me to find happiness with someone else since she isn’t here, but I can’t help but feel like if I move on with someone, I’m cheating on her in some way. I know in my heart that isn’t the case and I’ve tried going on a few dates, but at the time I wasn’t ready for anything, but having spent the past couple of weeks with Amber, I feel myself warming up to the possibility of something.

I stand outside of the cabin and watch the water flow downstream as I finish my rounds of the perimeter. I’ve been doing that everyday since bringing her to the cabin that my family shared lots of memories in and have found nothing suspicious so far. I stare at the water a few more minutes before heading back inside to check on her. I find her on the couch in the living room and she looks so damn hot I have to fight the urge to take her right on the couch. “What are you afraid of?” She asks me.

I freeze in my place on the couch. I don’t know how to talk about what I feel with other people. I’ve never told anyone other than my counselor how I feel inside and what I fear most and now this gorgeous kind woman wants to know what I’m afraid of.

I’m not supposed to be afraid of anything seeing as I am a highly trained Navy Seal, but after losing my family, fear snuck in on me. Something about her makes me want to tell her what scares me and that in itself makes me a bit afraid.

“I’ve never really talked about that with anyone before, but for some reason I have the urge to talk to you about it. I fear loss. A several years ago, I lost my wife and daughter in an accident and ever since then I’ve kept people at arm’s length, so I won’t lost anyone else. There’s something about you though, Amber. I don’t want to keep you at arm’s length,” I say as I look deep into her eyes.

I can tell that my long look is doing something to her as I sense her body changes. I hear her breath quicken and a light pink flushes her cheeks.
