"I think it's more I'll miss the man I thought he was."

"You understand this has to be done. Right?"

"You'll never do anything violent as long as you have me, Evelyn. That's what I'm here for."

"To destroy my problems?"

I chuckled. "You got that right, honey. I get to destroy all your problems."

"You know you can't do that. Right?"

"We'll figure it out. I'll be right there with you."

She looked up at me and smiled before wrapping her arms around mine and leaning her head against my shoulder. "I know."

As we took off, I kissed the top of her head. "Love you, Evelyn. I hope you know that."

For the first time since I'd had to leave my old life behind, I felt a peace settle over me. It was like I'd found a place I truly belonged. Sure, Grim Road was my family, but Evelyn was now my world. Her and her kids. I'd protect all of them with my dying breath. This was my home. Evelyn. Wherever she was. I had no idea what the rest of my life had in store for me, but I knew Evelyn would be there with me to enjoy it.
