Chapter 33

Chapter Thirty-Three

“The plan is not going to work,” Javier repeated for the third time, but like the previous two, Gomez wasn’t listening.

“Of course, it’s going to work. Why won’t it?”

He pinched the bridge of his nose. His patience about as thin as the hair on Gomez’s head. “Because you can’t just snatch her off the streets. She’s never alone. I told you that.”

“Then you’ll have to make sure she is. Know your place here, Javier. You do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me. The consequences of continually doing so are ones you’re very familiar with.” An evil glint entered the drug lord’s eyes, but Javier wasn’t threatened.

If push came to shove, he’d put a bullet between the asshole’s eyes .

He gave zero fucks about his life and the outcome of his actions. His bosses wouldn’t be happy with him, but he didn’t care.

He wanted out.

Javier was done.

“I’m aware of everything you do, Gomez,” Javier said, keeping his voice mild.

“Then you will ensure that my path is clear. Once I have her, I have everything sorted to ensure an efficient and quick return to Mexico. To the place where Cassandra belongs so she can fulfil her destiny. It is time for her to do what is required. She will be most useful to me.”

Javier’s fingers itched to grab his gun and follow through on his earlier thought. Apart from always spouting off that his niece needed to be with family, Gomez had never said what his real plans were. Although Javier had had an idea, and those ideas weren’t pleasant. “Fulfil her destiny?” He hoped Gomez was so full of self-importance he’d drop his guard and give Javier something to work with.

“She is the niece of the biggest drug lord in Mexico. Her duty is to ensure the cartel’s future is secured in a way that can’t be undone. I will become the biggest supplier of drugs and specimens that will be sold off to increase not only my wealth, but my reputation. Mark my words. Cassandra is going to ensure that everyone will fear me and what I can do to them.”

“What about what she wants?”

“Bah, she’s had her life. Now it’s time to do her duty.”

Javier nodded and wandered to the window overlooking the weed-infested front yard. He was surprised Gomez hadn’t migrated to a five-star hotel more fitting to a man of his stature.

Would Manuel Ramirez have sold off his daughter to cement a relationship with a rival cartel?

Perhaps, but he had a few more morals than Gomez.

As much as Javier wanted to rail against it all, he had his orders. He might hate the constrictions they represented, but he had a job to do. One he’d vowed to do honestly and with everything necessary to ensure that the end result meant there was one less scumbag walking the earth.

However, it didn’t mean he couldn’t ensure measures were in place so Gomez’s plan would be foiled.

To do that, it was time to shed the persona he’d absorbed for the last eight years.

Even if only for a few hours.
