Epilogue

Several Months Later

I adjust the blanket so it lays over the side of the couch just before looking at the picture on my phone.

Perfect.

I've never decorated a place before, and when we moved in here and life slowed down a little, I decided to try my hand at interior decorating. I know it's only our temporary housing, but it's going to be another year or so before the bunker is done, so I figured I would make this place home. I'm not the best by any means, and I'm sure my style would make others cringe, but it makes me happy, which in turn makes Kado happy.

I scroll to the next photo and study how they have the plants hanging from the ceiling. I walk over to the corner where Kado has already put hooks in the ceiling. Quickly, I set up the ladder that he left out. Grabbing a plant, I carefully move up the ladder. Several times I go up and down the ladder, carrying different-sized plants and hanging them.

When I start to come down for the last time, I look over my shoulder when I hear the door open.

"Hey," I call out, knowing that it's Kado.

When he comes into view, I see that he looks more tired than usual, but that's to be expected since he was out all night and covered in blood. Absentmindedly he waves as he steps into our cleanup room that's next to the stairs.

Once on the ground, I place my hands on my hips and frown. That's so unlike him. Anytime Kado leaves without me, the first thing he does when he comes home is give me a kiss.

Don't take it personally. It was probably a really hard job. That's all, I try to remind myself. I try to shrug it off as I close the ladder and take it back to its closet so it's not out in the living room for later.

When I come back out, Kado is still in the shower, the water running.

I strip off my clothes as I walk toward the bathroom. When I let myself inside, I'm already completely naked. My breath catches as I see Kado in the all-glass shower, leaning against the wall with his head tilted back, his body on display for only me to see.

It helps that this is our temporary home. I'm hoping she doesn't ask again when we move into the bunker. Yet, I bet I will say yes anyway. At least to them.

She's right. They are our family.

The sound of the doorbell rings throughout the house, and Lucy's wide eyes meet mine. I walk toward her and pull her into my arms, kissing the side of her head, silently letting her know this is going to be okay and that she's worrying for nothing.

With her tucked into my side, we make our way to the door. On the screen mounted into the wall, I see Kai, Cleo, Kenji, and Miya standing on the other side.

"There are so many cameras on us right now," Cleo says.

"Are you surprised? It's Kado." Miya chuckles.

Lucy laughs softly as I hit the unlock button. We watch as they step inside, and the heavy door closes behind them.

"Creepy," Kenji mutters.

Kai pushes ahead of everyone and heads down the corridor to the next door, which opens when he steps up to it. Then, finally, the group makes it to the door that leads into our home.

"Welcome, come on in," Lucy says as she opens the door.

"Have enough doors into this place?" Miya teases as she hugs Lucy before moving to hug me.

"One can never be too careful," Lucy tells her.

Cleo hugs Lucy and then me. The guys nod at me before giving Lucy a kiss on the cheek.

"Thank you for inviting us into your home," Kai tells her.

"You're welcome. Come on back. Oh, and please excuse the mess. We're still getting settled," Lucy tells them as she starts leading them into our home.

"I know you told us you were moving into a bunker, but I figured that would take a while. This place might as well be one. Shit, does it even have windows?" Kenji asks me quietly.

I shrug, not seeing the issue. My last place didn't have windows, then again, they wouldn't know that.

When we needed a temporary home, I made sure the Saint's Outlaws from Pensacola came up and outfitted our temporary home as well as they could. Now they are working on our bunker. I can't wait for it to be done.

The girls head to the kitchen, where Lucy sets out snack-like foods on the island.

"Would you like a glass of wine or anything?" Lucy asks them as the girls sit.

"I would love one," Miya tells her.

"Yes, please," Cleo adds.

Kenji turns toward me as we sit in the living room. "What, are you not going to offer us a drink?"

I point across the room to where Lucy set up a whiskey bar on wheels. She told me she plans on keeping other things on it most of the time, but when we have people over, it could be a drink station. I don't care how she decorates our place, as long as she's happy, so am I.

Kai chuckles quietly as he walks over to get a drink.

When he comes back, Kenji frowns. "Where's mine?"

"You can get your own. Last I checked, you had two working feet and hands," Kai tells him as he sits down.

Kenji huffs but doesn't move, clearly not wanting a drink badly enough if he's not willing to get it himself.

"This is a nice place you have here, Kado," Kai tells me.

I dip my head in thanks.

"Do you like living outside of the city?"

I wasn't planning for the temporary home to be so far away, but it was a necessity. I want to be close to the bunker while they build it so I can be sure it's getting done right.

I nod my head as I pull out my phone and type a quick message on the new phone Kai gave me. It has the same software as his computer, so it reads my words. Makes communicating easier with everyone else. I still don't use it with Lucy, though.

"It's quiet, and if anyone follows, it's easy to tell before I even get close." The automated voice reads aloud for him.

"Yes, I could see that being convenient," he tells me.

The girls laugh and make us look their way. I can't help but smile when I see Lucy laughing with them.

She's everything I didn't know I needed. I watched the two men in front of me fall in love with the women standing around mine, and I envied them. I didn't think I would ever have a physical relationship. I thought I was broken. All I wanted was companionship, someone to spend time with. Someone to fill the silence when it got too loud and I couldn't do it myself.

Then I met Lucy, and she changed everything. She showed me that I wasn't broken and that I could love and be loved. My demons didn't scare her away, she embraced them. She's not afraid to dance in the shadows with me and rid the world of evil.

She's perfect, and mine.

She must feel my eyes on her because she looks my way. Her eyes soften as she taps her chest twice. I place my hand over my heart and mimic the gesture.

The timer on the oven goes off, and Lucy breaks away from my hold and moves toward it.

"Do you need help?" Miya asks her.

"I'm good. If all of you want to head toward the table and find your seats, I'll be right there," Lucy says over her shoulder.

Everyone gets up and moves toward the table but me. I make my way into the kitchen.

"I told you to sit down," she says quietly.

I side-eye her, letting her know there's no way I'd let her carry this platter to the table.

Lucy huffs and rolls her eyes. "Thank you."

Leaning down, I kiss her quickly and then open the oven. I pull the tray out and carry it to the table, setting the two roasted chickens in the middle.

Lucy takes a seat next to me and rubs her hands on the tops of her thighs. "Well, dig in. I hope you all like it."

"I'm sure it's great," Cleo says reassuringly.

Kai clears his throat, getting everyone's attention. "I would like to make a toast, if that's okay with our hosts."

Lucy looks over at me, and I nod. She turns back to Kai. "Go ahead."

Kai holds up his glass, and we all follow suit. "I would like to officially welcome Lucy into our family. You were the missing piece for Kado, and I know I personally couldn't be more thankful for him taking you. You've brought him, and by extension us, nothing but happiness. I hope this is the first of many family dinners together."

"Cheers!" everyone says.

"Thank you," Lucy says quietly as she chokes back emotion.

I reach out and rub her back. Kai said it better than I ever could. Lucy was the missing piece and changed everything.

"Now let's eat, this looks amazing," Kenji says as he rubs his hands together, making everyone laugh.

She looks over at me and smiles. "I love you."

I love you too.

And I'll love you even more tomorrow.
