Chapter 7
While Cassia slept, the Alpha searched for Greyson and found him deep in thought, sitting in his den. Julian peered inside and rapped his knuckles on the door jamb.
"You okay, Grey-man?"
"A few knocks on the head aren't going to keep me down. Come in." Greyson stared into the fire and took a swig of his whiskey. "How's the wolf?"
"He's doing better. I popped in to see him, but he's still sleeping." Julian slid into a matching wingback chair next to Greyson and propped his feet onto the ottoman. "Dom's a tough one, yeah?"
Greyson chuckled. "She yelled at you, didn't she?"
"She accused me of trying to wake him up."
"She's protective of her tribe."
"Here I thought I was doing Logan a favor by letting her come with us but she's been the one who's been helping us." Julian gave a laugh. "Cassia said she made her tea. And fed her cookies. Now this thing with Rafe."
"It's good for her. Dom needs this as much as they do. But the wolf? Rafe is going to have to stay grounded for a while," Greyson insisted.
"That's not going to be an easy task." The Alpha's mind raced. "Yeah, no. He's not going to be content sitting in your home being babysat by a vampire."
"Dominque can handle it. She's older than him. She'll whip his ass into shape and he'll probably enjoy it."
"I shouldn't have brought him to Kellan's." Guilt laced through him. "But I had no idea Kellan would conjure cambions. Jesus Christ, that fae has become a menace."
"If you'd told Rafe that he couldn't have gone with you, he would have fought you tooth and nail. Kellan had already gotten under his skin."
"Rafe caught him spying out in Wyoming. Almost killed him that day. Hunter was the one who let him go."
"The next time I see Kellan, he's as good as dead. I'm gonna rip him limb by limb," Greyson promised. "He won't have to worry about granting his fucking favors to people. We've all let his bad behavior pass for far too long."
"Agreed. He may have been useful at one time, but now he's too dangerous. We need to alert Kade and Logan. Take him out."
"He's gotta be mixed in deep with a demon faction to be given access to cambions. A powerful demon gave him those things." Greyson shook his head. "Tonight was next level. It's been a while since I've seen anything like that."
"Secrets of Hell?" Julian scoffed. "I'm so fucking over this shit."
"Same, wolf, same. If it hadn't been for your mate there, we'd have been royally fucked." Greyson laughed. "In all my years I've never seen a shifter turn elephant. She's smart though. Real smart. Any other animal could have been killed by those things. But she crushed them good."
"She really is magnificent." Desire burned inside him at the thought of her.
"And she saved Rafe tonight. I know that must have been a difficult decision, but it was the right one."
"It was…" Courageous.Hot as fuck. Julian released a calming breath. "Necessary."
"Necessary? Yeah, okay. If that's what you want to call it." Greyson laughed and sipped his whiskey. "You almost didn't agree to it. I know your wolf damn sure mated her afterwards, didn't it?"
"Well, yeah," Julian couldn't lie. "It was one of those things. I've got this mating going on and after seeing her reaction to his bite? Come on, now. You're a vampire. You of all people know how it works."
"It's an aphrodisiac." Greyson waggled his eyebrows. "Fair trade. Blood for pleasure. It's a win win."
The Alpha laughed. "I'd marked her the other night, but then seeing her with Rafe? It was hot, I'll admit, but my wolf wasn't having it. She's mine so …"
"You're mated now." Greyson nodded.
"Correct. But she's chameleon and you know, there's this small part of her that must submit to my wolf."
"Seemed like she did well enough back there."
"Yes, but she must reveal her wolf."
"I have no advice my friend, as I'm a bachelor. But from what I can surmise from her behavior, she's into you … as the kids would say."
"It will happen to you too, Grey-man. Just wait." Julian laughed.
"Hell no. I'm quite satisfied fucking and feeding, then fucking some more. No commitment works well for me. Humans are tasty but I like to mix it up with a shifter or a witch every now and then. Keeps life interesting."
Julian sensed his presence before Rafe entered the study. "Come, wolf. Have a drink."
"Ah fuck." Rafe entered wearing a pair of black sweatpants and a t-shirt that read ‘dog person'.
"What the hell are you wearing?" Julian asked.
Rafe shrugged. "I dunno. Dominique gave it to me."
"Good she put clothes on you," Greyson told him. "Despite what you wolves think, running around naked isn't an option in this house. Viktor should have taught you this."
"Speaking of Viktor, that playboy owes both of us," Julian commented.
"Daddy vamp was here?" Rafe asked.
Both Greyson and Julian nodded.
"Shit." Rafe scrubbed his hand over his unruly mop. "I don't even remember. I was pretty out of it."
"If it weren't for Vik, you wouldn't be alive," Greyson told him.
"Huh?" Rafe scoured through the bar and settled on a bottle of mineral water. "My memory is kind of fuzzy. I'm still not feelin' right."
"How's that?" Julian's brows furrowed with concern.
Rafe sat down on an ottoman, his face tight with consternation. "I, uh…I can't shift. I can feel it. My wolf is there. But it's not giving the juice I need for shifting."
Julian and Greyson sat in quiet contemplation. The Alpha had expected it would take time for Rafe to heal, but hadn't anticipated it could affect his ability to fully shift.
"So what do you think?' Rafe asked.
"Your wolf will return eventually," Julian told him. "You were hurt pretty badly by the poison. The cambion…its horn went clear through you. Your wolf almost died. If it weren't for Cassia?—"
Rafe's eyes widened. "Cassia?"
"You don't remember?" Julian exchanged a look with Greyson.
"I remember feeding. I was in and out of it. I mean…I sort of remember having more than one donor. But my dude, she's your mate." He wore a confused expression then his eyes widened. "No…wait. We didn't…you know. I mean I know what happens when I bite. It always feels good. If you know what I mean."
"Cassia is my mate, but…" Julian's words failed him.
"Ah, let me clear things up for you, young wolf…young vamp," Greyson began. "You've been trained well by Viktor to induce pleasure with your donors. We'd given you three. But your wolf…it was fading. Your Daddy Vik sensed your distress and instructed us to give you the chameleon. As you would expect, your Alpha wasn't keen on the idea as he hadn't initiated the mating process but the chameleon insisted."
Rafe blew out an audible breath and set his water bottle down. He held up his palms. "Wait. We didn't…you know…like we didn't actually…"
"Fuck? Shag? Shake the sheets? Shall I go on?" A devious smile formed on Greyson's lips.
"Jesus, Greyson." Julian rolled his eyes and looked to Rafe. "This is what happened. Viktor suggested that chameleon blood would save you. She's a rare supernatural with magically charged blood…the kind of blood that could jumpstart your wolf. He said it would work and it did. And no, the three of us didn't…you know…we didn't do anything. Nothing happened. End of story."
"From where I stood, Cassia seemed to enjoy it as did you, Alpha."
"Jesus Christ, vampire. Now is not the time for this."
"They truly did enjoy it." Greyson laughed. "Don't let him tell you otherwise."
"Why are you starting shit?" Julian asked.
"On the contrary. I'm simply suggesting that should Rafe's wolf continue to not surface, another more intensive session may be in order."
"You're serious?" Rafe bit his lip.
"We'll cross that bridge when it comes to it." Julian would not rule out anything. Now that he and Cassia had mated, he'd be open to sharing for a night, but only if she agreed. "For now, you're alive. Your wolf is fine. Okay, not totally fine, but it's there."
"Why did you save my wolf? I still would have lived as vampire, right? I don't know if I were in your shoes, I'd share the blood of my mate."
"I did it because I'm your Alpha. Cassia agreed because we've formed a connection. You're pack." Julian nodded.
"And his mate talked him into it," Greyson added.
"Fuck off, vampire. Okay, yeah, I wasn't crazy about it at first. As we've all established, Cassia and I hadn't mated. Both of you know it was risky. I could have lost control and attacked Rafe. Rafe could have lost control and drained Cassia. But none of that happened. And now we're mated. We're all good."
"So it was nothing to do with your mate moaning?" Greyson laughed.
"Don't be a fucker. Come on now. I'm wolf. We're generally more open to what I'd like to call group activities." Julian laughed at his own explanation. "We all have done it. This mating thing is new to me. My concerns about the dangers last night were justified."
"I'm sorry, Julian." Rafe's face fell somber. "Greyson told me not to engage with the fae. I've just had enough of him. But I wasn't expecting him to grow those things…whatever the fuck they even were."
"Those things were cambions. But it's not your fault, Rafe. If it's anyone's fault it's mine. I should have left you back with Dominque. It was too dangerous. Kellan's been unpredictable. He's been escalating."
"No way I would have let you keep me behind," Rafe told him.
"I'm your Alpha. I could have ordered it. You'd have no choice."
"Well, I'm glad you didn't. But I'm sorry that I fucked up and let that thing get me." He rubbed his gut.
"You're healed up now, though, yeah?"
"Yeah. I'd like to not repeat the experience though."
"I want you to know that if you don't shift back to wolf in a few days … if you do need more blood, we'll discuss it with Cassia."
"Discuss what?" Cassia stood in the doorway wearing a smile.
Julian jumped to his feet as she entered the room. Her skin glowed, his fresh bite to her neck still visible. "Come sit with us."
Cassia tightened the tie on her robe. She brushed her hand over Rafe's shoulder before sliding next to Julian. "Hey … how are you feeling?"
"Thank you for saving me, Cass. I don't remember but?—"
Cassia's cheeks blushed, recalling her reaction to the wolf. "Hey, it's okay. We're a team now. I'm glad you're all better. Did you get to shift after we left?"
Cassia glanced to Julian who wore a concerned expression, his lips drawn in a tight line. He shook his head. The room fell into silence.
"What?" Cassia's eyes widened.
Greyson addressed the Alpha. "Go on. Tell her then."
"Rafe's having some problems shifting. He's going to rest up and try again. There's a chance he may need more blood. But it's just a small chance."
"But of course—" Cassia began.
"Let's give it some time."
"No, but seriously, Rafe." Cassia placed her hand on his shoulder. "You've risked everything for us. Julian's right. You're going to be okay. I would do anything for you. If you need my blood, you've got it."
"Did I hurt you?" His eyes softened, his voice a near whisper.
"No, no, it was fine. I'm fine." She removed her hand and looked to the Alpha. "Julian and I are both fine. We're good."
"You're sure?"
"Yes. I'm feeling great today." Cassia turned and winked at Julian.
Julian's chest tightened with pride. He put his arm around her and shot her a flirty smile. "She's good. Perfect."
Cassia laughed, and focused back on Rafe. "We'll do as Julian says but if you need my help again, it's totally fine. I don't want you worrying. We'll get your shifting back going soon. We're a team."
"Pack," Julian corrected.
"We're a team. Greyson and Dom are in it too."
"They're honorary pack." Julian sighed. "Okay then … well, we've got to regroup. We need to see Thorn." Julian looked to Greyson. "Were you able to touch base with Viktor or Absinthe to see if they can get us together with Thorn? I can reach out to Jax if I have to. If there's a demon in New York, he'd definitely know."
"Absinthe appears to be missing for the moment, but I contacted the newly appointed head of vampires in New York state. Desdemona Hesperia. There's an event later today. We are cordially invited to attend."
"Excellent." Julian nodded.
"What does he mean, an event?" Cassia asked. "Like, what kind?"
"The demon likes trouble." Greyson downed the remaining whiskey and set his glass on the end table.
"Half demon," Rafe corrected.
"He's a demon. They relish in chaos."
"What do you mean?" Cassia pressed.
"Bastard loves the attention. Enjoys the fanfare. So he throws extravagant events with all the bells and whistles," Greyson explained. "An invitation is highly coveted."
"Like a ball or a gala?" she asked.
"It could be anything. He intentionally sets the stage like he's directing a Broadway musical. Invites supernaturals of all sorts."
Julian looked to Greyson, almost afraid to ask what nonsensical theatrics to expect. "What is he doing this time?"
"Desdemona says it's a pool party."
"A pool party? But it's at night?" Cassia's faced tensed with concern.
"So she says. Entry requires swimwear. No street clothes allowed."
"It's going to be rather cold tonight in New York." Cassia shook her head.
"Dragul meu, we don't make the rules. The demon does. One of many reasons I hate the fucker."
"A pool party can't be all bad. Some of us are still single." Rafe shrugged. "We might have some fun."
"There's no we," Julian stated. "You were just on your ass last night, bud. I think it's best if you stay back here and rest. Dom will order a donor. A fuck and a feed is in order."
"What?" Rafe's eyes widened and he raised his hands defensively. "I'm fine. Look at me. I'm back, baby. I may not be able to shift yet but no way I'm leaving you guys out there. Hey, hey, hey…she said it." Rafe pointed to Cassia nodding. "We're a team. Right? A pack. No man left behind. Including me. Tell them, Cass. Teamwork."
Cassia laughed and shot him a broad smile.
Greyson shrugged. "Up to you, Alpha."
Julian's guilt resurfaced. "I shouldn't have let you go last night. So if you go, there's got to be some ground rules."
"Sure, sure." Rafe nodded and waved at him. "Come on. Lay it on me."
"Number one. No picking fights."
"Yeah, yeah. Good rule. Just got hurt. Probably a sound idea. Okay. Got it."
"No wandering off by yourself. You have to stay with Greyson or me at all times."
"All right. Got it. What else?"
"Here's the most important rule. Unlike last night, when I tell Greyson to flash you out of any trouble, you're immediately done. You're out. No arguing. Until you have your wolf back, you're lying low. We clear?"
"Yes, Alpha." Rafe lowered his gaze and accepted his fate. "Thank you."
"Okay, let's talk more about Thorn."
Greyson growled and dropped his fangs. "We can't trust him."
"Has there been any incidents at Thorn's events lately?" Julian asked.
"None that I've heard of," Greyson paused. "Wait. There was an incident. One with a fire."
"It was dragons," Rafe explained and pinched his fingers together. "A little bit of fire."
"Dragons?" Cassia's eyes widened.
"We will have to pay him." Greyson raised an eyebrows.
"Whatever he wants. Price is not an issue," Julian said.
"Well don't be surprised when he asks for a price you don't want to pay. Slimy demon cunts."
"What about Kellan?" Julian asked. "I heard they've had a falling out."
"I've heard the same," Greyson answered. "Something to do with the dragons. Who the fuck knows. They both have similar powers so the feud is simply a cold war."
"Mommy was there the last time I saw him," Rafe said.
"Mommy?" Julian raised a questioning eyebrow at him.
"You know. Ilsbeth." Rafe nodded. "I'm joking about the mommy part. She's one scary bitch."
"I'm not entertaining any more meetings with Ilsbeth," Greyson stated. "If she gets a whiff we're looking for something, a vessel … a secret of Hell … She's gonna want it … even if she doesn't."
"How do you know that?" Julian asked.
"I know Ilsbeth. I'm tellin' ya she's gonna ask too many questions. If she knows what this vessel is, she's gonna want it. If she doesn't know, she's gonna want to know. She's been to Hell. She's gonna be lookin' for payback," Greyson huffed.
"Hey, what's going on between you two?" Rafe asked.
"Nothin. There ain't nothin' goin' on between us," Greyson grumbled.
Silence fell over the room. Julian looked to Rafe, who smiled and raised his eyebrows at him. Something is most definitely going on. Now fucking what?
"What is it? Just spill it," Rafe pressed.
"There's nothin' to spill. The young wolf has taken too much poison. His head isn't clear."
"He likes her." Rafe held his water bottle to his lips and drank it, attempting to hide his amusement.
"What? No." Julian's jaw ticked with anger. "Are you fucking the witch?"
"Jesus Christ. Are you high? No, no," Greyson protested. He shrugged. "Look, it was a kiss. One kiss. It happened many years ago."
"How many years?"
"One hundred."
Julian glared at him in silence, sensing his lack of candor.
"Okay okay….more than fifty." Greyson shrugged.
"Are you for real?"
"Okay….maybe ten but I swear…Goddess honest truth…five years. Shortly before her sudden departure."
"Jesus Christ." Julian blew out an audible breath. "You kissed her? Really?"
"Maybe a little…you know…" The vampire pinched his fingers. "Eh. Just a wee bit taste. I swear it was just once. Oh twice, there was that time in the Alps." He held his hand to his chest. "But I swear on the life of my mama I never fucked her."
"You've been lying." Rafe smiled.
"Oh no I haven't. No, no, no, my friend. I meant what I said. I don't want to see the witch. She's like hemlock. Beautiful on the outside but deadly. I'm good." Greyson held up his palm.
"Any more secret lovers to declare before we go to this party?" The Alpha asked.
"No. I swear."
"Ok then." Julian's gaze panned the room. "We're flashing in and out. We have no time for human ways. We must get this done. The hellhounds will come again and until we can figure out how to either kill them or help them, we've got to keep moving."
"Listen, listen…I know you don't want me to go but I've been around Thorn. He knows I'm tied to Ilsbeth. He won't hurt me," Rafe told them.
"The wolf does have a point about Thorn. Surely she'll have spies. I know her…she's a devious one." Greyson spoke the truth. In recent years, Ilsbeth's power and influence had grown. Her convalescence had clearly ended. Even Samantha had insinuated that she was attempting to take over her coven.
"What if he doesn't tell us about the vessel?" Rafe asked.
"If he doesn't tell us about the vessel, he'll know someone who can. He walks within the realms of Hell. He knows the factions who fight within it. A secret of Hell. That's what the fae told us. If there are secrets of Hell, there may be more. Maybe they're a currency. We don't know. But Thorn will know something."
"I agree. It's a small world here, and it's a small world there." Greyson nodded. "Thorn may be enjoying the fineries of human life but he'll always be drawn back to Hell. There is no other way for a demon. It won't ever let him go."
* * *
"I'm freezing my nuts off,"Rafe complained.
"You wanted to come, wolf. Buck up. You afraid of a little East Coast cold front?" Greyson laughed. "The ladies will still see yer goods."
"Fuck off, dude. You're wearing a goddamned fur coat and I'm wearing a tank top. You flashed us out of there without warning me and I didn't have a chance to grab my sweatshirt."
"Jump up and down. It'll get your blood pumping. You must learn to deal with the cold," Dominique advised in a matter of fact tone. Dressed in a black leather jacket and shimmering red bikini, she twisted the end of her sleeked back ponytail with her fingers.
Julian wrapped his arm around Cassia. Despite the cool temperatures, his blood flowed hot for his beautiful mate. "You okay?"
She smiled up at him. "I'm good. Cold but good."
"Let's go," Rafe pleaded.
"Stay with Greyson," Julian warned.
"What is happening to me?" Rafe asked. "Wolves don't get cold."
"It's the vamp in ya. We don't do well in the cold. At least I don't. Why do you think Viktor lives in Miami?"
"Dear Goddess, you're going to be fine. Just don't think about it," Dominique told Rafe.
"Okay, focus people." Julian looked up to the enormous domed glass conservatory. Steam covered the windows, blurring the interior. The air of the night crackled with magick.
"What is this?" Greyson asked.
Julian scanned his surroundings. A mile-long driveway twisted through oak trees leading to an enormous stone mansion. "Who builds an indoor pool so far away from the main house?"
"Do you feel it in the air?" Rafe asked.
"The magick," Cassia whispered. "You can see sparks around the edges, where the glass meets the metal. It's beautiful."
Julian studied the building. Wisps of white light whipped along its panes. "So much for being discreet."
"Thorn doesn't do discreet." Rafe laughed.
"Remember the dragons," Greyson said as he adjusted his straw fedora.
"The pool water should help diffuse the energy," Julian told them. "If things go sideways, flash out."
"You know it," Greyson agreed.
"There must be twenty cars lined up over there," Rafe commented. Several yards from the glass structure, valets attended to luxury cars and limousines.
"My guess is about forty to fifty people, give or take. Some creatures might be able to flash depending on their abilities." Julian gave a soft squeeze to Cassia's hand and led them across the yard toward the conservatory. A crunch sounded beneath his boots as he stepped on a branch. As they moved closer the music grew louder.
Within seconds they reached the entrance. Julian's beast stood ready to attack. It wasn't just the magick alone. A slight twinge of Hell zipped over his skin like electricity, leaving the hairs on the back of his arm standing up.
A flock of pelicans stood watch near the door. Women dressed in hot pink bikinis with matching feathers wrapped around their necks greeted partygoers. A trio of bare-chested drummers beat a rhythm on taiko drums.
As they approached the walkway, the entrance door swung open revealing a woman wearing a colorful red and white kimono. Her iridescent pale blue skin sparkled in the light. With great reverence, she placed her palms together and bowed toward Julian.
Out of courtesy, Julian returned the gesture, bowing with his arms to his sides. "We are here to see Thorn Rachille. Desdemona Hesperia brokered our meeting."
"Prince Lobos. Konnichiwa. My name is Sayuri. Thorn is expecting you. I regret to inform you, however, that he will be late."
"Do you know when he's expected to return?"
"I anticipate his arrival within the hour. He has asked me to be your host during the event." Her gaze painted over Cassia. "I see you all have complied with the dress code."
"We appreciate your hospitality," Julian told her.
"May I ask who is in your party?" A flash of fire flickered within her deep brown eyes.
"Yes, of course. This is my mate, Cassia." Though polite, Julian asserted his dominance. Sayuri would most likely convey to Thorn who attended. "This is Greyson Dragavei of Romania, and Rafe Beaumont who is under my care. Dominique Moreau. She reports to Kade Issacson of New Orleans."
Sayuri nodded. "Arigatō. We are honored to have you at The Sanctuary."
"Arigatō gozaimasu." Julian nodded in return.
"You speak Japanese, Alpha?" she inquired.
"Choto. I'm afraid I've spent too much time away and I'm a bit rusty."
Sayuri smiled and gestured toward the entrance. "Dōzo agatte kudasai. Tonight's festivities await."
Julian and Cassia exchanged a whimsical smile as they followed Sayuri into the open-air glass conservatory.
"This is The Sanctuary."
Overgrown vines and bright colored flowers climbed its walls, twinkling white lights illuminating the enormous circular indoor pools. Mechanical red and green hummingbirds fluttered to and from strategically placed red gardenias which ascended from the floor to the ceiling.
The scent of Asiatic lilies drifted in the air, a soft Hawaiian melody echoing from a quartet of ukulele players. A beautiful woman wearing a sarong began singing, her voice light and soft.
"It's beautiful," Cassia commented. "This place…it's so…"
"Heiwa." Peace. Julian nodded.
"Hai." Sayuri radiated happiness as she continued to address them. "The performance this evening is designed to be an immersive experience. At this moment we wish for guests to absorb the healing energy of sound and water, to inhale the purified air. We believe in connecting to Mother Nature. Many of our rare tropical plants have been internationally imported for this evening only. As you can imagine most human authorities would not be pleased if we introduced a new species to their ecosystem. We take great care of Mother Earth by returning her foliage to their homes where they can continue to flourish."
"That must be quite a feat," Greyson remarked.
"Great vampire. The Sanctuary is everything but nothing. It is here to be enjoyed for the evening. It is magical. One never knows when or where it will appear again."
"That must be some heavy duty magick," Rafe remarked.
"The pools contain mineral water from all over the world." She pointed across the room. "That one there has the healing hot spring water from the blessed Incan springs in Peru, fresh from the Andean mountains. That one there has water imported from the Dead Sea. Each is marked accordingly."
"May I suggest you have a drink?" Sayuri clapped her hands and two men dressed in skintight green lizard costumes arrived within seconds. Immediately they began pouring champagne and distributing the glasses.
"Thorn believes his guests should experience the very best life has to offer. He has a great attention to detail. Cristal." Sayuri accepted two glasses and handed them to both Cassia and Julian. "Kanpai." She held the glass up into the air and brought it to her lips.
Though he didn't trust her or Thorn, Julian sipped the bubbly liquid so as to be polite. As he scanned the room, he noted a fine vapor releasing from hot-pink potted hibiscus plant flowers.
"What's in the mist?" he asked.
"It's magick infused. A spell of euphoria."
"You're drugging the guests?" Greyson laughed. "That's one way to get this shindig goin'."
"As I said, it's an immersive experience." Sayuri's focus shifted to a cloaked figure who emerged through a thick brush of bamboo.
Julian studied the subtle change in her expression, her smile fading briefly. Though she recovered and flashed him a broad smile, her concern had already been revealed.
"I'm afraid I must attend to the staff. Thorn will be arriving soon and the performance must continue. Please avail yourselves of the pools. Be aware we have a diverse paranormal community with us this evening. Thorn would appreciate it if you didn't antagonize the dragons in any way. We had an incident at a past event."
"Oh, they did," Rafe whispered to Dominique.
"Have a wonderful evening." Sayuri turned on her heels and headed toward the back of the atrium.
"Arigatō. Thorn is quite the showman," Julian nodded as she stole one last glance at him.
"This is quite the party," Rafe said.
"What party? This is giving spa date vibes," Dominique sniffed.
"It's like she said, though, isn't it? It's a performance," Julian noted. "And this is just the first act. We're living it."
"I suppose we should head over to the Dead Sea. Tour the room. Get the lay of the land. There're a few heavy hitters in the room, ladies and gentlemen. Their energy is strong." Greyson brought his glass to his mouth. "I wanna know who they are."
"We'll go to the center pool." Julian kept his voice low. "Sayuri appeared a bit shaken. She's a good actress but not that good. I'm wondering who was working the shadows."
"Dominique. Go with Greyson. Rafe. Come with us to the pool. It's safer." Julian wanted the wolf with him. Though he knew Greyson would keep him safe, the wolf was his responsibility, his pack. Nothing would harm him tonight.
"Interesting. No humans," Rafe noted.
"There're no wolves here tonight either." Dominique told him. She scanned the room. "A few witch donors are about. I know you've preferred humans, but witches are an acquired taste."
"Jax has his wolves tucked away safely in the city," Julian said. "He doesn't care for Thorn's theatrics."
"That's because he's busy creating his own." Greyson set down his empty glass onto the tray of a passing server.
"Let's go." Julian tugged on Cassia's hand and looked back to Rafe who followed.
The Alpha planned to play along with Thorn's immersive event, stoking the demon's ego. They needed answers and they needed them fast. Many things in life were forgiving but time wasn't one of them.

"This place. It feels so good."Cassia kicked off her sandals, removed her white silk robe and draped it over a teak chair.
Arousal threaded through his body as she turned to face him. As if Julian hadn't seen her in hours, his cock lengthened at the sight of her. Her long thick curls draped over her olive skin. Her silver bikini hugged her body perfectly, accentuating her full round bottom. I'm so fucking lucky.
"We'd better get in the pool before we put on our own performance," he half-joked.
"That might be interesting." She shot him a sexy smile.
The hot mineral water kissed their bodies, warmth dancing over their skin. Unable to resist, Julian pulled her toward him, until her breasts brushed his chest.
"When I'm around you … I can barely keep my hands off you." He grazed a kiss to her cheek and whispered in her ear. "When we get back I'm going to devour every last inch of you."
She gasped as he reached between her legs and cupped her mound. Mine.
"Julian," she breathed.
"I'm going to fuck you like you've never been fucked, meu amor."
Loud squealing laughter interrupted their moment and Julian leaned back onto the ledge of the hot pool to get a better view of the room. Rafe swam to the opposite side of the pool so he could keep watch over the Alpha and his mate from the opposite direction.
Cassia adjusted her seating on Julian's lap, facing outward so she could see as well.
His lips found her neck while he scanned the conservatory. As he peppered her skin with kisses, he spoke to her. "Those guys sitting over there near the fire are fae."
"How do you know?" she asked in a whisper.
"I can scent their hellfire from here."
"Witch at three o'clock." She smiled. "Lovely little pentagram on her hip."
"Absinthe's coven. She's got three crescents underneath on her side ribs."
"Did you see Sayuri's eyes?"
"I suspect she's part dragon. But something about her…I could be wrong but I sense wolf as well."
"Why do you think she's with Thorn? I mean, she seemed so nice."
"It's as she said. Thorn desires the best of the best. There must be something about her he admires. I doubt it has to do with throwing parties but I can't be sure. Perhaps a special skill she brings to his table. Do not be tricked by her pleasant demeanor."
"There is something about her," Cassia continued.
"Vampire over at the ice bar." Julian watched with fascination as a bartender poured blood from a carafe into an enormous humpback whale ice sculpture. As the bright red liquid flowed from its ice luge, a pale vampire, dressed in board shorts, captured the blood in his wide open mouth, his fangs descended.
"That's something you don't see every day." Cassia wrinkled her nose.
Julian watched with intensity as a brunette with her hair tied up in space buns approached Rafe from behind. The Alpha's eyes locked with the wolf's and gestured to alert him.
"Who's that?" Cassia asked.
"Donor." Julian studied the woman as she held out her wrist to Rafe. He sniffed her arm and began talking with her.
"Is she legit?"
"Thorn curates the best. See the tattoo on her neck." Julian focused in on the witch. She wore an intricate patterned tattoo choker inked in red. "It's a rare international coven. They sacrifice their blood with the belief it brings them more power. They're very selective. Some witches live in the States but the main coven operates mostly in Europe."
"Do you think his wolf will return soon?" Cassia asked.
"Yes, but it may take time. My ability to throw light is what you'd call inconsistent at best. I've been short circuited since the last time I chased demons."
"Do you think you'll get it back? How long have you had this special gift?"
"I've been able to do it for hundreds of years. Recently taught my sister to call on it. She can do it too. Not sure when I'll get it back. It's there, I know … it's gotta be there. I've noticed since we've mated, my body feels invigorated."
"Is that what you call it?" She laughed.
Julian sucked a breath as Cassia spread her legs and reached between his, gently brushing her fingers over his cock. His dick stood at attention, his beast urging him to play with his mate.
"Julian…do you feel that?" Cassia stopped abruptly and looked to the ceiling.
The Alpha tightened his grip around her waist as the room began to tremble. The lights dimmed, bathing the entire conservatory in a deep crimson hue. The ukulele music faded and morphed into a slow rhythmic tempo emanating from in-room speakers. The bass drum grew louder, a sensual beat infiltrating the room.
Bodies danced within the shadows. Their flowing forms emerged from the foliage. Nude women and men painted in metallic gold engaged in acrobatics while others simulated sex. The room buzzed with sexual energy, a palpable shift in the vibe of the party.
"What's happening? Is he here?" Cassia whispered.
"He's probably watching." Julian searched the room for Greyson.
The ancient sat on a lounge chair watching over Dominque, her mouth latched onto the thigh of a muscular male donor, who writhed in pleasure.
Rafe looked up to Julian and nodded in acknowledgement of the situation. The donor witch knelt beside him and massaged his shoulders. With her breasts exposed, she whispered in his ear, attempting to entice him.
"I'm feeling … so hot," Cassia breathed. "What's happening in here?"
"I suspect this is all part of the experience." Though Julian fought the lure of the ambiance, his cock turned to stone as Cassia rocked her buttocks up into him.
Aware of his surroundings, he slipped his fingers under the flimsy bikini triangle, teasing over her mound. "You're a very bad girl making me hard like that. You realize they're all watching. You want to be part of the show, meu amor?"
"They can't see though, can they?" She shifted upward onto his hardened dick and slid down it again. "It's under water."
"You dare to test the theory?"
"But this feels so good."
"I fear Thorn's party is affecting you. I'm not mad." Julian grazed his lips over her neck. "How am I supposed to get out of the water like this? You're earning yourself a spanking."
"I'm just playing a bit," she laughed.
"Don't move," he ordered, pleased as she stilled. "Perhaps the wolf would like to watch." Julian glanced up at Rafe who held the donor's wrist to his lips, his gaze on Cassia and his Alpha.
"What—"
"Perhaps, I'd want him to see your pleasure." Julian nibbled at the back of her neck and slid his fingers under the fabric of her bikini until his fingertips teased through her folds. "Of course, this is just a tiny preview … when we get home …"
"Jules." She sucked a breath.
"I'm going to make you scream. But tonight, you must be quiet as a mouse not to draw attention, can you do that?" The temptation to fuck her right there in the pool escalated but he was well aware Thorn had intentionally staged the mood. He looked up to Rafe who sunk his fangs deep into the witch's wrist. Though she moved to touch him further, he growled and waved her away, simply feeding, watching intently as Julian teased his mate.
"Look at Rafe feed. Do you recall his bite?" Julian enjoyed pushing his mate, testing her limits, which he anticipated would excite her.
"Yes," she breathed.
"Perhaps we should explore this with the wolf. Do you want him to watch?"
"No, I?—"
Julian removed his fingers from her pussy, denying her pleasure. She released a small moan in protest.
"Keep quiet, pet. Do not lie to your Alpha." Julian smiled at Rafe.
"Yes," she confessed in a whisper.
"Good girl," he praised, rewarding her by driving a thick finger inside her pussy.
"Oh Goddess—" Cassia bit her lip, attempting to remain silent.
"That's it." Julian scanned the room, taking note that most creatures were either involved with each other or watching the acrobatics. "Here comes Rafe."
Cassia's eyes widened as Rafe crossed the pool. The water rippled off his muscular chest as he crossed to them.
A smile lit in Julian's eyes as Rafe closed the distance. "Do you see my beautiful mate?"
The wolf nodded and gave a closed mouth smile, his eyes scanning the room.
"She's played with fire by tempting me."
Rafe dropped his fangs as he knelt in the water, submerging his body up to his neck, his face within inches of Cassia's breasts.
"She enjoyed your bite the other day, wolf. Let's give her a little lesson in submission. You will not drink of her yet." Julian circled his thumb over her clit, eliciting a stifled moan. "Come join me in her pleasure."
Rafe looked to Cassia, whose lips parted. Julian reached for her wrist, placing it upon the wolf's shoulder. "We are connected."
Cassia sighed as Rafe's head dipped to her chest, his deft tongue slipping under the fabric of her bikini top until he'd latched onto her nipple.
She sucked a deep breath as Julian brought his hand to her neck, a gentle grip meant to hold her. As he plunged a finger between her lips, she sucked them.
"You're gonna come for me right now. In front of all these people. I think you like this … I think you want to experiment and play … just like your kitty does."
"My Alpha," she whispered.
Julian stroked the pad of his thumb over her clit, aware of Rafe's hand moving in tandem with his as he slipped his fingers inside her. "And we're gonna make you purr."
"They're going to see … I—" Cassia looked down to Rafe.
"Show them how beautiful you are when you come." The lights flickered as the act came to an end. But he was driven to finish her. They'd already gone too far. He rocked his erection up into her bottom, aware there would be no release for him until later. His pleasure was in her submission. He was patient … oh so patient. Julian would push her, have her in every way possible and gladly lose himself doing so.
"Julian," she whispered, her hips rocking into their fingers as they fucked her.
Her heart pounded in his ears, her body writhing on his cock. As he flicked his thumb over her clit, he whispered his command into her ear. "Come for me, kitty. Come now."
"Oh Goddess," she breathed.
He held tight to her as her orgasm rocked through her. With their fingers still deep inside her, pumping and stroking her, she trembled in his arms, quivering from his touch. Rafe released her, pushing back into the water as Julian quickly withdrew his fingers and spun her around to face him.
Julian crushed his mouth upon hers, claiming his mate. The beast inside him would consume her and the world would know that the chameleon was his.
Logic broke his frenzy, and he tore his lips from hers. His forehead pressed to Cassia's, his heart pounding against his ribs. Lust swirled in her eyes, and his rock hard cock begged to be released from its cage. Julian fought the craving, he resisted the temptation to flash her away so he could have her to himself.
A flicker of the lighting shook the moment. He sensed the half-demon's presence which immediately put him on alert. Thorn.
Julian brushed his lips upon her earlobe, all the while scanning the room. "Good little kitty. I promise you we're going to have fun later."
Within seconds the lights morphed to a deep shade of purple. The room buzzed with the mumble of conversations as the music died.
A microphone crackled as Sayuri's voice echoed into the room. "I hope you are enjoying the experience this evening. At this time, we'd like everyone to exit through the bamboo gardens. Don't worry, darlings. Fur coats and blankets will be provided. You will find comfortable lily pad seating on the lawn. The fireworks show will begin shortly. Please surrender your drinks. Your server will attend to your needs as you exit."
A blustery rush of cold air bellowed into the atrium. Servants, ready on hand, distributed crimson blankets and coats to shuffling partygoers as they exited the pool area.
Julian made no move to leave as Sayuri approached, once again greeting him with a bow. She reached into a basket and held out two fluffy red towels. Two servants behind her stood ready with blankets.
"Prince of Wolves. Thorn will see you and your guests now."
Julian stepped out of the pool, his erection straining through the tight fabric of his shorts. He assisted Cassia from the water and accepted the towel from Sayuri. He draped it over Cassia's shoulders before accepting another one for himself and made quick work of drying off, wrapping the towel around his waist.
"Thank you," Cassia said as she averted her gaze.
Julian knew what she was thinking. He'd been thinking it too. They'd nearly made love in front of the others … with Rafe. While unconventional, he'd blame it on whatever mood-altering concoction filtered in the air. But the truth lay in his beast, a primal urge to claim her, to demand her submission in pleasure, in every way possible until every last soul in the universe knew she was his. With his concentration solely focused on Cassia, he'd barely noticed that Dominque, Rafe and Greyson had sidled up next to them.
Sayuri whispered a few words to the servants who promptly headed toward the door. She turned to greet them. "We hope you've enjoyed the experience. Though I regret to inform you your portion of the performance has ended, you will be happy to know Thorn has arrived and waits in great delight for your arrival. Please follow me."
Greyson and Julian exchanged a brief but intense look, both preparing for any surprise attack the half-demon may have planned. He'd rather have been the one to direct the meeting, but Thorn played by his own rules or not at all and they were at his mercy for more information.
Julian glanced to Rafe, whose expression remained impassive. Yet the Alpha sensed the wolf's anger, which seeped from the pores of his skin. Though Rafe's wolf and vampire silently waged an internal battle, his soul fought them both for dominance.
Julian brushed by him and briefly touched his shoulder, sending calming energy. Rafe smiled in response. They'd get through this together. Rafe was pack, his brethren, his beta.
The Alpha squeezed Cassia's hand as they passed through a column of bamboo. The scent of lilies purified the air but the sweet scent did nothing to assuage his concerns regarding the demon.
"Please, come in." Thorn sipped champagne and waved to them from a white bamboo chair. He sat upon a red velvet cushion, dressed in metallic white board shorts and fluffy fur slippers. With slick raven hair tied back into a bun, and a clean-shaven face, he wore nothing else but a smile.
Sayuri gestured to the circular seating arrangement. The Alpha eyed a crimson velour settee directly across from Thorn. Julian sat down, Cassia by his side. Greyson, Rafe and Dominique each chose a seat where they could strategically protect the Alpha and his mate.
"Gentlemen. Ladies." Thorn stopped speaking as several servers entered and dispersed glasses of a blue bubbly drink to everyone. "Ah, Harold, thank you. This is my latest business endeavor. I can't wait to hear your opinion. Show them Sayuri."
She nodded and held up a glass bottle shaped like a winged dragon.
"Listen carefully. Picture this …" Thorn handed off his drink to a servant who waited obediently while he continued speaking. "Blue. Dragon. Champagne. Light your life on fire. Or … or … Fly with Fire. I'm still deciding. Go on, go on … drink, drink."
Julian looked into the blue drink and sniffed it. With hints of blueberry, it hardly appeared exceptional.
"Come now. Don't be like that. I promise it's not poison. I'd never do such a thing to a royal guest. Besides, I never fool around when it comes to champagne. Never." A cool expression washed over his face.
Julian locked his eyes on Thorn's. The motherfucker dared him to drink it. What the demon didn't know was that he was practically immune to everything. His last trip to Hell had ensured as much.
The Alpha forced a smile as he pretended to drink it, allowing only a drop on his tongue. Though he reached deep within, feigning pleasure wasn't an option, alas he couldn't lie.
"I appreciate your hospitality, but I regret to inform you this tastes like piss." Julian maintained a stoic expression, waiting for the half-demon's response.
Thorn burst out in maniacal laughter and then his expression fell flat. "I blame the blueberries. And the dragons." He clapped his hands. "Get rid of this piss! Now!"
The servants scurried, collecting all the glasses.
"No one tells the truth anymore." Thorn sighed. "They tell me it's good. It's perfection. Yet it's the words of an Alpha that gift me the truth."
"I believe in transparency and the truth. All else will follow," Julian said.
"Well, isn't that refreshing." A broad smile crossed his face as he turned to Greyson. "Ah, vampire. We meet again. How is your brother?"
"He's well," Greyson grumbled, wearing a scowl.
"He's delightful, isn't he?" Thorn waggled his eyebrows with a smile. "Always the light of the party."
"And you." His eyes narrowed in on Dominque. "You're Kade's darling? I don't believe we've met."
"I'm not afraid of demons." She descended her fangs and glared at him.
Thorn sniffed the air. "Ah, but you have had a touch of Hell. But don't you worry, sweetheart. I'm not going to hurt you."
"And you, baby vamp. How's the transition going?"
Rafe answered with silence, glaring at him.
"Sadly, mommy couldn't attend tonight. She's such a busy bee, that one." Thorn smiled at Cassia. "Lovely, lovely lady. Why are you with this troupe of supes?"
"Julian's my mate," she offered without revealing her name, who or what she was.
"We are looking for something. Of course I understand that information is valuable. I'm offering you something in return." Julian hadn't told Cassia or Greyson what he'd use to bargain with the demon.
"Hmm … so mysterious." Thorn rubbed his hands together. "I do love the suspense. Tell me Alpha. What have you brought me?"
"You agree to an exchange?"
"I'm intrigued. It's not every day a Prince of Wolves asks for my assistance. So I suppose I do. If I have the answer you seek, you will show me your gift."
The muffled sound of fireworks reverberated in the room. Thorn had deliberately ensured their confidence.
"We have been told of a secret of Hell. Aroya. It is a vessel."
A curious smile curled onto Thorn's face. "Someone has been divulging secrets, I see. Hmm … are they still alive, I wonder? It's of no matter to me, I'm sure."
"Kellan. I'm afraid he escaped. However he may be missing a limb or two." Sowing division like a master, Julian anticipated Thorn's cooperation.
"That despicable fae deserves to crawl in the bowels of Hell. I must say, I'm happy to hear of his misfortune. An enemy of my enemy is my friend."
"Business associate," Julian corrected.
"I assume the little fae spilled this information to you?"
"You assume correctly."
"We had an unfortunate parting of ways." Thorn's expression turned sour. "We had a terrible incident involving a dragon. As you are aware, my events bring me great joy and I won't allow a flea like Kellan to disrespect me or my friends. He's on borrowed time. I'd have killed him myself, but alas he's a slippery snake."
"We should give you a heads up that he's working with demons. Cambions."
"Half human, half demon … a bastardized species. Scaly skinned, winged creatures. Very dangerous." Greyson folded his arms across his chest.
"He nearly killed Rafe's wolf," Julian divulged. "You'd be wise to take caution with Kellan."
"And why would the lone Prince of Wolves care about a stray wolf?" Thorn asked.
"Because he's mine. He's pack." Julian nodded at Rafe who remained stoic. "So if you happen to see Ilsbeth you may want to mention Kellan's new friends."
"These motherfuckers aren't to be trifled with," Greyson commented.
"Interesting. So Kellan is working with a Hell faction. No fae should be able to invoke demi-demons … let alone ones that take on ancients. Hmm."
"Invoke away he did … if it weren't for Cassia—" Rafe went silent and looked to Julian.
"My mate. She helped to defeat them. Kellan's too dangerous to walk the earthly realm. He must be bound to Hell."
"Ah, the lovely little chameleon. Tell me pet, how did you defeat him?"
Cassia looked to Julian for approval before answering.
Julian nodded. "It's fine. Tell him."
"I shifted to an African elephant. The cambion were simply too aggressive, poisonous."
"Ha! I love it! Slimy asshole, that Kellan. He's bested by the Alpha, an ancient and a chameleon. This will teach him not to mess with you." Thorn smiled at Julian. "Your mate, here. She's quite clever. And beautiful."
"She is." His wolf released a slow protective growl. Julian gritted his teeth, his smile not reaching his eyes.
"I have a feeling this all has to do with the vessel. Your powers, beautiful. Do indulge me."
"Thorn, we're here because?—"
"Dear Alpha. Indulge me, I beg of you. Chameleons are so rare. I give you my word I'll help with the vessel, but I insist … the chameleon." Thorn extended his hand in a polite manner, giving a slight bow, all the while keeping his eyes fixed on Cassia.
Julian weighed his options. His wolf urged him to stop the madness but his mate could handle her own. If Thorn tried to hurt her, he guessed her beast would trample him before he got a chance.
Julian looked to Cassia. "This is your call."
"Of course, yes. I'm not sure what else you want to know?"
"Do tell me everything, my dearest. Start from the beginning."
"I'm chameleon. I've survived the past hundred years moving from city to city because …" She paused and took a breath, weighing her words. "There is no easy way to say this. I've always had a problem with hellhounds. They'd come in my dreams … well, more like nightmares. I'd see them and I'd know it was time. Time to move. Time to run. I lived among humans and never had to worry about becoming too attached. I'd been working in New Orleans when I booked a personal job. I've done private gigs before, even a couple where I traveled, so I didn't think much of it. A human had booked me for a job in Idaho. It was far away but they'd prepaid. They'd arranged for everything … the airfare, hotel … it all seemed legit. Until I got there. A mansion full of humans. At the same time, they weren't. I could feel the evil … taste it. I tried to make an excuse to leave but they came after me. I ran."
"Idaho?" Thorn peaked his hands, tapping the pads of his fingers together.
"Yes." Julian nodded.
"Please continue, lovey."
"I don't remember that much after Julian found me in the woods. They shot at me and there was a landslide from the rain. Julian took me to the hospital because he thought I was human. But I shifted and skipped out without telling him. There's not much that scares me in this life but whatever was in that house … the humans … I don't know what they were planning but it's like they knew what I was.
"When I got back to New Orleans, I tried brushing off what had happened. But then the visions … of the Alpha, of the hellhounds began again. I tried astral projecting to him … to warn him, but the hellhounds were already there. They burnt down his home. He survived."
Thorn shot Julian a smile. "It's like a fairytale. You saved the royal prince.
"There's nothing much to tell after that. The hellhounds have found me again though … not just in my dreams, but in New Orleans."
"That is quite unfortunate. Even I don't care for the creatures. Satan's beasts of burden. I don't have much say in the matter." Thorn clapped his hands and servants swarmed over them, handing out cups of tea. The scent of peppermint swirled in the air. "Let's have a cuppa, shall we? Your chameleon is quite intriguing, Alpha. Go on."
Cassia accepted a steaming teacup, and continued. "But in New Orleans, at Logan's … a hellhound almost breached the wards. Dominique …"
"I killed it." Dominique's flat expression revealed no emotion whatsoever. "Disgusting creatures. Sadly it wasn't a hellhound. Still though. It's dead. Whatever."
"Ah, a plot twist. Do tell."
"As it was dying, it transformed to its original state. A wolf. We don't know what pack it's from. We think someone is doing something to these wolves."
"If they can do that to a wolf, they may be able to do it to other creatures," Greyson surmised.
Cassia shook her head. "The hellhounds came to me in a dream once again, and told me about the vessel. I don't know what it is or what's in it. But here we are."
"I'd like to rewind a bit dear. I share concern over this situation for reasons I will divulge in a minute. Lovely chameleon, do you remember details about the evening you went to the party? Anything special about the humans? Perhaps something they were wearing? A scent?"
"Why is this of any value?" Greyson asked.
"Because I. Want. To. Know," Thorn growled, his eyes flickering red.
Julian's jaw ticked in anger. Fucking vampire couldn't shut his trap, and damn demon played with them like a cat with a mouse. But it would be the patience and wisdom of a prince who would steer the ship.
"What is the purpose of your inquisition?" Julian asked, his demeanor calm.
Thorn sipped his tea while keeping his gaze on the Alpha. "Because … it's never a good thing when humans are conjuring demons. Not for them. Not for any of us. I must know who was involved, who is possibly feeding these monsters. Perhaps the same one who is giving the fae cambions?"
"I don't know." Cassia's brow wrinkled in thought. "They looked like regular humans. It was a party. It was black tie. They were dressed up. The home looked new. No, wait. It was old on the outside but new on the inside. Renovated. The man … he was American. But the woman, she sounded British."
"Do you know where in Britain? Try listening in your mind."
"Northern England. Lancashire."
"Ah … perhaps witches? More likely the descendants of those who burned them," Thorn guessed. "Do you remember any symbols?"
"No. Sorry." Cassia shook her head. "It all happened pretty quickly that night."
"Alpha. I'm about to ask for your trust in this situation. I must place my palm onto her head."
"Thorn … no," Julian refused.
"I swear on my soul … what's left of my soul anyway that I will not harm her. I just want to jar her memory a tad."
"Jesus." Julian shook his head.
"No, it's okay," Cassia insisted. "I think I've blocked it. I ran out of there so fast. If there's something that I can't remember that will help us, I want to remember it."
She squeezed Julian's hand and released it, and stood. Thorn stood as well and approached her in a slow, deliberate manner. Towering above her, he touched his fingers to her forehead for several seconds and returned to his seat.
"Are you okay?" Julian asked.
"Yeah, I mean I don't feel any different." Cassia sat down.
"Try again, dearest. Close your eyes and picture that night, the room … I must know if you see anything at all."
Julian reached for her hand and released his power. We see together.
Through her eyes, the great room came into view. Nearly fifty people milled about inside. Dressed in tuxedos and gowns, they wore black ribbon masks and sipped flutes with blood. Cassia's fear jolted through him as she wandered the room.
A barefoot butler dressed in a red velvet thong and bow tie poured blood from a phallic-shaped decanter. Cassia stopped as a blonde woman approached her.
"I am Sophia Preston." The woman extended her hand to Cassia. An amulet hung from her neck, a twinkling silver circle, inside it, a reversed pentagram. Her cold clammy hands matched her icy smile that didn't quite match her eyes.
In Cassia's peripheral vision, a dead woman lay on a stone altar facing north. With her throat slit, her blood drained into a copper bowl. A swath of blood trailed across the floor to the back of the home as if they'd drug several bodies across it. She looked to her blood-splattered shoes and screamed.
"Cassia,' Julian called to her, jarring her from the memory.
"Jesus." Cassia blew out a breath and took a sip of her tea. "Sophia Preston. They were draining humans and drinking blood."
"Preston," Thorn repeated. "Normally, I wouldn't jump to conclusions, but it's she's likely from the lineage of the Prestons of the UK … perhaps one going back into the 1600s. Witch trials in England and so forth."
"She didn't strike me as witch," Cassia replied.
"Oh darling. She's not the witch. She's far worse than anyone who was ever hung. She's an accuser. The worst, vile type of human, hate is buried deep in their souls, in their DNA. They may not be called demons but that doesn't keep them from being demonic."
"So can we talk about the vessel?" Julian pressed, growing impatient with Thorn's tangent.
"Yes, of course, and this will require no compensation given that we all have a stake in resolving this matter." Thorn brought the teacup to his lips. "In full disclosure, I spend as much time in the earthly realm as possible. I know what I am. Yet like many of you, we are created this way, not because we asked for it or deserved it. And so while I may have been raised in Hell, my future will remain in this realm."
"The vessel," Julian repeated attempting to keep his focus on task.
"The vessel is a release. It is a secret indeed. Because these hellhounds came to the chameleon, they're possibly drawn to her ability to change, her psychic abilities but also the hellfire of her origins, of your origin as well, Alpha. No one is infallible or truly immortal. Where there is a will, there is a way to death. But sometimes there is a fate far worse than death … to be transformed into a servant of the devil or to another who uses you for its bidding. It has long been suspected the hellhounds weren't all born as hounds, a true beast of evil for Satan. This is one of the secrets of Hell."
"Is it a spell?" Julian asked.
"Is there a way to draw them out, to free them?" Cassia asked. "It's heartbreaking to think someone is doing this to them."
"Yes, it's a spell of sorts. But not brought upon by a witch necessarily. But the right demon could conjure the change. It's difficult to know for certain, but if one was looking to build both an army of hellhounds and human minions for his bidding on Earth, this would be a clever way to do it. I cannot be certain in this case, however." Thorn held up a finger. "This brings us to the secret. The vessel. There are rumors. I do recall one that enables the owner of the item to break the indenture. I don't know what the object is, but you and your mate may be the conduit."
"So we find the vessel and then use this object to change them?"
"If they came to you in a vision, they will come to you once you have it," Thorn told her. "But I am only speculating, dear ones."
"Where are we supposed to find it?" Julian hoped like fuck it wasn't Hell. He'd already lost his spark and worried he'd lose his own ability to shift.
"If I were you, I'd go back to the house where they attempted to trap the chameleon. This sect. Find them. They may or may not have moved on."
"Why would they leave the vessel there?"
"Secrets of Hell are sometimes meant to be found. They have their own life, their own will."
"This doesn't make any sense," Greyson murmured.
"Perhaps there is a portal," Thorn surmised. "If you find the portal, it may set you on the path."
"Jesus Christ, this is some bullshit." Greyson stood and began to pace.
"While I appreciate the information you've given us today, I have to agree with the vampire. Even if we find said portal, it could turn into some kind of wild goose chase," Julian surmised.
"Ye have so little faith for ones of the Goddess." Thorn smiled.
Julian summoned every ounce of patience left within him and continued pressing the demon for information. "I expect you have something else to tell us, so on with it, Thorn. We're running out of time. The real hellhounds are coming for Cassia soon. The protection spell Samantha cast isn't permanent."
Thorn once again clapped his hands. "Dearest Sayuri, please fetch me a purse and notebook."
His faithful hostess returned to his side with a small pad of paper. Thorn shot them a devious smile and lifted his finger into the air. Its tip glowed bright blue, a whisp of smoke curling into the air as he used it to scrawl out a message. Within seconds he'd ceremoniously folded the paper in three and inserted it into a black velvet pouch.
"I'm afraid our time together has come to an end," Thorn announced as he stood and extended the item to Julian. "You have hellhounds on your heels, and I can't risk another incident at one of my parties, or I'll never have another dragon attend."
As the Alpha reached for the pouch, Thorn held it up into the air out of reach. "There is a symbol inside that is for your eyes only. Should you find this symbol you will know you are in the presence of a vessel, a secret of Hell. Do not read the incantation aloud until you believe you have found the portal. You get one chance at this."
Julian accepted the pouch and nodded. "I appreciate your help with this matter."
"Like I said, you will do us all a favor if we can find out more about the sect. However, I suspect they will move on. Humans like these pass on their evil to the next generation and their secrets are well guarded. I sincerely hope that you and your mate are able to root out the demon who has created the hounds. Should you need assistance, I would like to offer Sayuri's services."
"Thank you but I've killed a few demons in my time. This won't be my last."
"Sayuri." Thorn ignored the Alpha. "Please give him your calling card. I do not like that this demon is allowing a simple fae to run around with cambions. This will give us all a bad name. The last thing I need is for one of them to ruin my parties."
Sayuri approached Julian. She reached into her kimono and retrieved a small object and extended it to him. "Alpha. I, too, am well versed in demon killing and would be happy to be of service. Please take this. When broken, I shall arrive to assist."
Julian nodded as she placed a miniature porcelain blade into his palm. Soft to the touch, it buzzed with an energy he could not quite place. Neither of the Goddess nor Hell, it resonated pure power. "Arigatō."
The Alpha reached for Cassia's hand and nodded to Greyson in silent agreement. It was time to flash.
A servant wrapped a long fur cape over Thorn's shoulders as he stepped away. As he made to leave, he stopped and once again turned to Julian.
"If you see Kellan, please give him a message from me. His days in the earthly realm are numbered. He is no longer useful. He puts all of us at risk. He is on my list. He'll be lucky to have you or your beta see to his end. Because if I find him, I will make sure he suffers an eternity in a way that only a demon would see fit." A broad smile broke across his face. "And oh, I do hope you enjoyed the party. I certainly enjoyed the show."
Julian didn't allow for another word as he set his hand onto Rafe and dematerialized. With no time to waste, they'd move to find the portal, the vessel and kill the demon who'd set the hounds loose.

"Where are Greyson and Dominque?"Cassia asked as they materialized back into Greyson's home in New York.
"He mentioned earlier about touching base with Kade. They'll be back soon."
Julian looked to Rafe, who appeared pale. His concern for the wolf escalated. From here on out, they'd all have to be available to fight whatever or whoever was creating hellhounds. If his wolf was weakened, there was a greater chance someone could use the dark magick on Rafe.
"Hey, you okay?" Cassia asked as she handed Rafe a throw blanket from the sofa. "You're freezing. He's shaking."
"I'm fine, I'm fine," he protested. "You know I don't do well with the flashing."
"Let's get him in the shower," Julian suggested.
Cassia nodded. "I'll get it ready. Meet you in the bedroom."
"Rafe." Julian knelt beside him. "I know what it's like when our magick is off. I've been fighting my own issues. It's taken time, but I'm starting to feel better."
"But I fed a little."
"You fed a little from a witch. But it's Cassia who helped get your wolf back. I could call for a donor but I think we know what needs to be done." Julian couldn't bear to see Rafe suffer any longer. If he hadn't brought him to the fight, he would have never been gored by a cambion in the first place. My fault.
"My wolf is there but it's like the vampire in me is taking over. I can't shift. I'm cold as fuck."
"It's going to be all right. Cassia wants to?—"
"But she's your mate, Jules."
"Exactly. You will feed from her and you will feed from me. We'll get this knocked out." Julian weighed his next words carefully. "Rafe. I know you got the short end of the stick when you were injured last year. You're a loyal wolf. You fought for your pack. Viktor was right to save you. He knew you were going to do something special in this world. One day you will be an Alpha. But until then, we're pack. You're my beta."
The Alpha and Rafe exchanged a silent look in contemplation. Julian wanted to make sure the wolf understood his place in the pack, his home.
"Hey, man, you even hit a pretty good golf ball. You might even beat me one of these days. Maybe. You'll never win at chess though," he joked.
"You never know." Rafe laughed and shook his head.
"Come on. We're going to get you right again. You're not just my beta … you're my friend."
"You're my Alpha for sure. But when this is all over, with the demons and cambions, I need a break for a while. I need some time to get in touch with myself. You guys can't babysit me anymore. It's time I go test this on my own. I'm ready. No, when this is all said and done, I'm outta here for a bit. I'll be back but don't come looking for me."
"All right. So you agree that you're going to feed tonight, get well? Stop worrying about us."
"Tonight was hot but I don't know." Rafe averted his gaze.
"This isn't optional. I saw you with Cassia back in the pool. She's a shifter. Come on. Let's go." The Alpha didn't give him another second to protest. Rafe was his responsibility, his pack.

"In here,"Cassia called from the bathroom. The patter of the water in the shower echoed through the bedroom, steam filtering out of the bathroom.
Julian wrapped a hand around Rafe's waist and helped him onto the bed. "Cass!"
"What's going on?" Cassia's eyes widened as she caught sight of Rafe.
"He needs help," Julian told her. He needs you. Us.
"Of course. Hey. Rafe. It's okay." She sat next to Rafe and cupped his cheek.
"I can't ask you guys to do this. You just mated," he began.
"I wouldn't agree to this if I didn't mean it," she told him.
"We'd never let anything happen to you." Julian gave a tight smile.
Cassia nodded and looked to Rafe. "I trust Julian. And I trust you. It's just a little blood, okay. No big deal."
"But you know what can happen…it's not just a little blood."
"So what?" Cassia challenged. "We're shifters. Today … just then in the pool. I could have said no if I'd wanted to. Julian could have. We invited you. I liked it. There was no biting involved. Just the three of us. Together."
"Cass is right. I'm fine with this. Cass is fine with this. We need you to get better. Between my blood and hers, you'll be completely healed. Whatever happens, happens."
"You're both sure?"
Cassia brushed her lips to his cheek and whispered in his ear. "We're a team."

Julian looked to his mate, who lay nude under the sheets. With her damp hair splayed out on the pillow, she smiled as he and Rafe gazed down upon her.
"Isn't my mate beautiful?"
"Inside and out," Rafe agreed.
"Bite me first," Julian instructed. "Then Cassia. I'm going to stop you if your thirst gets out of hand."
"I promise it won't." Rafe glanced back and forth between them. "You sure this is something you want to do?"
"Stop asking and get in here." Cassia reached up and tugged on his hand, pulling him into bed.
Julian gave him a slight push and laughed as he rolled onto his back. "This is your one and only chance to drink chameleon blood."
"You're a popsicle still." Cassia tucked the blanket over Rafe. He slipped off his towel and tossed it on the floor.
"You too, Alpha." She winked and reached for his towel, tugging it and throwing it across the room. "You're happy to see me."
Julian released a growl and pinned her to the bed, the blanket a thin barrier between her and his rock hard cock. He pressed his lips to hers. I love you. The words lingered on his tongue, but with Rafe in the room, he ignored the emotions brewing inside him.
As he tore his lips from hers, she gave a soft moan. "You sure? At any time, just say stop, and I'll flash Rafe away."
"I won't hurt you," Rafe promised.
Julian rolled over onto his back, bringing Cassia with him. She settled her head on his chest, her thigh draped over his torso.
Julian looked to Rafe. "When this is all over, you will shift."
Without hesitation, the Alpha extended his arm to the wolf. Rafe dropped his fangs and brought it to his mouth. Julian nodded and the wolf struck.
"Holy shit," Julian said as arousal tore through him. It had been hundreds of years since he'd let a vampire bite him, but the sensation seemed amplified in the presence of his mate.
He groaned as Cassia peppered kisses down his abdomen, dragging her tongue over the hard ridges of his abs. He sucked a breath as she made her way between his legs, warm fingers wrapping around his hardened dick.
The Alpha looked down to Cassia, his body on fire with desire. She flicked her tongue over the broad crown of his cock, her warm breath on his skin. From root to tip, she licked him. Slowly stroking his cock with her hand, she laved at the velvety soft skin of his balls, sucking until he groaned.
As he gazed down upon her, watching as she pressed his cock in between her lips, his heart pounded in his chest. She swallowed him down to the root, her one hand crawling up his chest and her other exploring Rafe's inner thigh.
"Fuck yes." With each draw of his blood, his body buzzed with energy.
"Take his cock," the Alpha ordered.
Cassia moaned as she devoured his dick, sucking. As she wrapped her fingers around Rafe's cock, the wolf cried out in pleasure.
"You are so hot," Julian told her.
As she sucked him once again, this time twisting his cock while sucking it, Julian nearly came. "Fuck…hold on…ah."
He glanced at Rafe, who'd released and sealed his arm. She gasped as he tugged her diagonally onto the bed and settled her onto pillows. He reached between her legs and slid his fingers into her wet folds. Cassia moaned, arching her back, seeking more friction.
"Come Rafe. I want to see you pleasure my mate before you drink from her. Lick her pussy."
The wolf did as he was told, his wild blonde hair brushing her inner thigh as he licked the crease between her mound and thigh. Ever so gentle, he cupped her bottom.
"Please now," she cried as she took Julian's cock, stroking it.
"Open your mouth, sweetheart." As he slid inside her warm mouth, he almost came. Jesus Christ, his woman was incredible. He leaned over, slowly fucking her mouth, watching with intensity as his beta moved his lips to her pussy.
"Oh Goddess," she cried as Rafe licked over her clit.
"Yes, that's it," he grunted as she sucked his cock, taking him down her throat.
He'd come if he allowed her to take him much longer. His beast demanded his mate. "Wait, wait, wait."
Cassia panted as he withdrew his cock. Without saying a word, Rafe lifted his head, his face wet with her juices. His fangs descended. As Rafe's teeth sliced into her thigh, Julian shifted and pressed his mouth to her pussy. The magick in the room sizzled as Rafe drank her essence. Cassia rocked with her orgasm as Julian lapped relentlessly at her clit, sucking and flicking it until she begged for mercy.
Never in his life had he experienced such feral hunger for another. Watching his beta drink from his mate, his wolf growled. Claim her.
