EPILOGUE KIM

EPILOGUE KIM

I’ve wanted this my whole life, and now that it’s happening, don’t know if I can do it.

Josh is holding my hand and offering encouraging words. The pain is nearly unbearable.

I’ve been at the hospital for five long hours, going through labor. How do women do this? Should have had that C-section.

“It hurts.” I pant after another contraction rips through me.

Josh massages my back. “It won’t be much longer before you’re holding our baby.”

I nod because I don’t want to yell.

I feel another pull and scream out. Josh’s face contorts. That’s right, big fella. It hurts like a motherfucker.

“I see the head,” the doctor says. “One more push, and your baby will be here.”

My doctor is a woman. Josh researched for the best woman gynecologist in town. He said no man would see his wife down there. I laughed at his cavemen attitude, but truth be told, I didn’t mind a lady doctor myself.

Josh has consumed every bit of baby information he could find. Made sure we attended every Lamaze class. Went baby shopping with me and his mom. And there hasn’t been a day over the last month when he hasn’t rubbed my swollen feet. He’s the best.

“Here he is” the doctor says, and the baby cries. Now I cry and look at Josh, who’s almost white. Must have seen the baby covered in goo. For an ex-Seal, he can be sensitive.

“Congratulations. It’s a boy.”

It’s a surprise to us. We didn’t want to know what we were having.

“Yes!” Josh pumps a fist in the air. I try not to shake my head.

The nurse in green scrubs carries our little boy to us. Lays him in my arms. He has a full head of dark hair. The little man is going to take after his father.

I rub my finger against his sweet little cheek.

“Ohhh,” Josh coos.

I look at him. “I love you, Josh.”

“Love you, too.”
