CHAPTER THIRTEEN

It took the team nearly an hour to drive eleven miles in the storm to their hotel. By the time they arrived, Evie and Autumn had a table ready for them in the restaurant. Sophia Ann was still downloading everything that Hunt had given them, listening to each conversation carefully for any clues as to Mansur’s whereabouts.

“We ordered some appetizers,” said Evie.

“How did you know when we’d arrive?” frowned Aiden.

“Sweetie, we all have trackers,” smirked Evie. “I follow all of you to be sure you don’t get into any trouble. I think of you all as my children.”

“Aw, thanks, Evie, but you’re too young to be my mom,” smiled Carl.

“Don’t tell your mother that,” she laughed. “How did it go?”

“We got the charges against Hunt dropped, and Mansur Sr. and Wentz are in custody. Unfortunately, Mansur doesn’t want to give up his son,” said Aiden. “But Hunt did us a solid and didn’t even know it. He had a secondary L412 on during his hearings. He recorded every conversation, even phone calls that were happening with Mansur and people on the other end of the line. With any luck, Sophia Ann will be able to pull something off of that.”

“Sounds like the kid was a help to us,” said Evie.

“He was a great help and good soldier,” said Ham. “He didn’t touch that woman, and it was clear that she was trying to frame him for something he didn’t do. The Japanese consul was embarrassed and immediately left, apologizing to him.”

“Is he VG material?” asked Autumn.

“We think so,” nodded Georgie.

The waiter set a few trays of appetizers on the table, and the team dove in, not realizing how hungry they’d become. The January nor’easter howled outside, the snow blowing sideways with the winds. You couldn’t even see across the street, let alone think you could drive or fly in the weather.

“Damn, it’s a mess out there,” said Ham. “I’m grateful you got us some rooms, Evie.”

“Well, they didn’t have enough for everyone to have single rooms, but Autumn, Sophia Ann, and I will room together, obviously Carl and Georgie, then I’ve got Ham and Aiden together.”

“That’s perfect,” nodded Ham. “We’ll be warm and safe through the night. Hopefully, by tomorrow, this will have cleared somewhat, and we can head home.”

“Or not,” said Sophia Ann. They all turned to stare at her as she removed the earpiece. “He’s in a cabin somewhere in this region.” She turned her phone toward them, a bright red circle covering a large radius.

“Soph, that’s a damn big area to search,” said Carl. “I mean, it’s better than what we had, but that’s a lot of land.”

“I know, but it’s the closest I could get to the area. As you can see, it’s very rural, and everything is bouncing off of one tower. That’s what enabled me to narrow it down. He lives within this circle.”

“Yeah, but how many other people do as well?” asked Carl.

“I’m still working on that. I sent the initial data to Hiro and the team. He said they should be able to get something back to us by morning. If we decide to head up that way, they’ll send the rest of the team.”

“Sounds like we’ve got a night to plan if we have to head that way,” said Aiden. Ham nodded as their main orders arrived.

“Let’s get to it.”

“Hi,” smiled Jonas, bending to kiss Khloe. “How are you?”

“I’m good,” she smiled. “How are things in D.C.? Have we heard from anyone?”

“We have. They were able to get the charges dropped on the staff sergeant. Sophia Ann was able to get the data off the L412, and Wentz and Mansur Sr. were both arrested.”

“That’s great news! Did he tell them where Archie is?” she asked excitedly.

“I’m afraid it wasn’t that simple, babe,” frowned Jonas. “But they were able to gather some data from the L412 that Hunt was wearing. It appears that Mansur Sr. has been communicating with someone that we believe might be his son in the mountains. Did he ever mention owning a property up there?”

“Never,” said Khloe, shaking her head. “I have to be honest. Things like that never impressed me, and I was guilty of tuning him out when he talked about finances or houses or cars. It just wasn’t important to me.”

“That’s because you’re the most perfect woman I know,” said Jonas, hugging her tightly. “How is your hand?”

“It’s fine. Really. Even Riley and Gabi said that I should be able to take the cast off in another week or so.”

“Mmm,” he murmured against her ear, pulling her closer to him.

“You know,” she whispered, climbing onto his lap, “we’ve been dating long enough that an intimate relationship seems the next logical step.”

“I give you my word. I love you, Jonas. I’ll do anything to make sure our life together comes to fruition. Now, what do you say we take a hot shower, change clothes, and go have some dinner? It seems I’ve worked up an appetite.”
