CHAPTER 124

Do You Wanna See My Dungeon?

Brownie

“So this is it?” King Keith offered his hand, and Rufus clasped his arm in a firm shake.

“I’ll be around.” Rufus let go, returning to holding Brownie’s hand again. She gave it a light reassuring squeeze.

After Knolith had come out victorious, the entire Black Fortress had gone into celebration mode. It had been almost a decade since someone had bested their commander general, and it was the very son of their previous commander general (who definitely wasn’t crying in the stands with fatherly pride). Knolith had finally grown powerful enough to take the position, and there was a veritable street fair going on outside.

“You know Chloe is going to just outright murder you, right?” Henrietta asked. “That you chose to step down during her wedding , making her miss the entire battle. I hope Brownie has ample potions on hand. Actually, here.” The Dark Lady handed over two Revive potions, adding, “Just in case.”

“It was a fair fight,” Rufus argued. “I wouldn’t just leave you to someone who wasn’t powerful enough to take up my job.”

“You aren’t helping your case,” King Keith said. But he didn’t seem angry.

The two couples had stuck around to confer the Commander General title upon Knolith and settle Donna, and then had retreated to the office in the castle to file a report about it. Brownie stood as witness, and the files were already processed thanks to Henrietta. Knolith could sign his own forms later, as he was currently the star of the show outside.

“ Speaking of Chloe .” King Keith rubbed the bridge of his nose in exasperation. “We left her with the florists. Do you think they’ll be alright?”

“No.” Henrietta reached out and patted her husband’s arm. “We should probably get back fast. Can you summon Gimtak? ”

The very imp flew in from the window. “You called for me, Your Viciousness?”

“Were you waiting outside the window this whole time?” Henrietta asked, amused.

“No.” The imp shook his head, affronted. “I stayed back long enough to hear Madame Potts’s Cast.”

“What?!” King Keith snapped. “What did she say now?”

Gimtak opened his mouth, but the king shook his head. “No. Wait. Tulith should be here any second with the transcript.”

Henrietta pulled out another potion while they waited. “Gimtak, do you have enough mana to get us back to the border, or do you need a refill?”

“I’ll need one when we get there, but I’m fine for this jump, Your Viciousness,” the imp reassured his queen. He eyed Brownie and Rufus. “Are all four of you coming?”

“We could bypass any encounters?” Rufus said, putting the question to Brownie.

She shook her head. “No, we still have Donna, and the week long solstice festival has only just started. We’ll have plenty of time to get there before the wedding and the actual masquerade ball.”

A lizardkin maid appeared in the doorway to the office, coming to a dead stop from a full-on run. Seeing them all standing there, Tulith sighed and walked up to the Dark Lord, curtsying politely.

“Perfect timing, Tulith.” King Keith held out his hand, and the maid passed over a sheet of paper.

“I came as fast as I could.” She frowned. “You needed to hear thisss.”

Everyone leaned in to read the page.

Hello, everyone, this is Madame Potts.

The Fenrir Dungeon boss in the Hollow Gorge is bugged currently, and only dropping rose quartz grieves. They’re found on level six, so if you want some nice grieves, now is the time to go. Or just wait outside the dungeon to buy them.

In case anyone missed it, Peldeep came out just fine. This madame congratulates Peregrine and Bastian on a wonderful wedding. I wish you both a fine happily ever after.

Sumbria, you know that I know that you don’t listen to anything I say. Case in point with the capybara incident. I understand. So instead, I’m going to tell you that you definitely should not, under any circumstances, send your army to Orion’s Cove. There are definitely no pirates docking there. Today. As we speak .

Regent Havork, I just stumbled on a contingent of Doryn loyalists while exploring your lovely countryside. I’ve sent you a missive with a teacup that you should have already received. Yes. That’s me. Now please do the thing.

Anyone on their way to the Summer Masquerade, please note that Blackfog spies are crawling all over North Sumbria looking for something … or someone. Bring extra guards if you can.

Speaking of the Summer Masquerade, happy summer solstice, everyone! The seven days of celebration leading up to the masquerade ball start tomorrow! The celebrations for Necromancer Chloe and Countess Julia’s wedding are in full force. This foreteller has her own invitation and will see you all at the Masque.

Oh, and if you do go to the Masque, you might get to meet some of the more elusive Valarian eligibles. Lady Amy has just confirmed attendance, and this is a rare opportunity to see the elven saintess in person. Duke Julian von Slyke will be there, and he isn’t the main love interest for nothing. He’s got tall, dark, and brooding down to an art, and his grumpy sunshine potential is only marred by the man’s stunning purple hair. Duke Wyldon will be there, and he’s still the perfect catch for anyone looking for that glasses-wearing intellectual type. Master Thomas might show up, the rogue, but he’s been too busy representing Servalt on the Continental Council to do much else.

Queen Henrietta should consider bringing her sword to North Sumbria. And a Revive. Maybe four. Yes, four Revive potions should do. That way, Chloe can focus her magic elsewhere.

This is Madame Potts, over and out.

Keith let out a long sigh. “Every time. If you get kidnapped again, I’m burning it all to the ground.”

“Not every time.” Henrietta summoned her magical sword into her hand and stood on tippy-toes to kiss her aggrieved husband on the cheek. “This will be the second time we battle in North Sumbria.”

“Every time she mentions you, there is some harrowing quest to fight evil!” Keith argued. “I would know— I was one of them.”

“You sure you don’t want the ride?” Henrietta asked Brownie, but the bard just shook her head.

“I still have a few encounters to get past, and I don’t want them to happen all at once outside Grand Duchess Calisto’s doorstep. ”

“That’s probably for the best.”

The royal couple bid them farewell before portaling away, leaving Rufus and Brownie in their grand office alone with a few of the bureaucratic members of the Dark Horde plying away at their desks in an alcove closer to the door.

“So.” Rufus turned to her. “Do you wanna see my dungeon?”
