Chapter 9
NINE
T he morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting a warm glow across the sheriff's office as Arden settled into his chair, ready to start another shift. He reached for the overnight reports, his thoughts drifting to Mari and the unsettling package she had received. The memory of her frightened expression tugged at his heart, strengthening his resolve to keep her safe.
As he reviewed the reports, Sheriff Mallory entered the office, his presence commanding attention. Arden looked up, greeting his superior with a nod. "Morning, Sheriff. Anything pressing on the agenda today?"
Reed shook his head, his eyes scanning the room. "Nothing out of the ordinary. Just keep an eye on things and make sure the town stays safe."
Arden nodded, his mind already formulating a plan. "I think I'll swing by Mari's shop during my patrol, just to check in on her."
Reed raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile playing on his lips. "Good idea. It's important to keep the community feeling secure, especially our newer residents."
With a final nod, Arden grabbed his gear and headed out, his thoughts never straying far from Mari. The short walk to the dessert bakery allowed him to clear his head, the fresh morning air invigorating his senses. As he approached the quaint storefront, the delicious aroma of freshly baked pastries enveloped him, and a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
The bells above the door chimed as he entered, and he was greeted by the sight of Mari behind the counter, her face lighting up with a warm smile. "Arden! What a pleasant surprise. What brings you here this morning?"
Arden leaned against the counter, his eyes taking in the array of love-themed baked goods on display. "Just wanted to check in on you, make sure everything's okay. And maybe sample some of these delicious-looking treats, if you're offering."
Mari laughed, the sound like music to his ears. "Of course! I've been experimenting with some new recipes, inspired by the idea of bringing a little extra love and comfort to everyone who visits."
She handed him a plate with a selection of petits fours, each one more tempting than the last. Arden took a bite, savoring the flavors that danced across his tongue. "Mari, these are incredible. You've got a real talent for baking."
A blush crept up Mari's cheeks, and she averted her gaze. "Thank you, Arden. That means a lot coming from you."
As they chatted, Arden couldn't help but notice the way Mari's eyes sparkled when she talked about her passion for baking. He found himself drawn to her warmth and kindness, a sense of peace settling over him in her presence.
But as much as he enjoyed their lighthearted conversation, he needed to address the more serious matter at hand. "Mari, I wanted to ask... have you had any other incidents with Victor since the package arrived?"
Mari's smile faltered, and she nodded slowly. "I feel like he's constantly watching me, Arden. It's unsettling knowing he's out there lurking in the shadows."
Arden reached across the counter, his hand resting gently on hers. "I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe. And remember, I'm always around if you ever need company or someone to talk to."
The gratitude in Mari's eyes was unmistakable. "Thank you, Arden. Having you here brings me a sense of comfort I haven't felt in a long time."
With a final squeeze of her hand, Arden reluctantly pulled away. "I better get back to my patrol. But I'll be keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity. You call me if anything seems off, okay?"
Mari nodded, a soft smile gracing her lips. "I will. Stay safe out there, Deputy."
As Arden left, his mind was already racing with ideas on how to protect Mari. He needed to dig into Victor's past to uncover any clues that might help him keep her safe.
Back at the sheriff's office, Arden pored over old records and police reports, piecing together a picture of Victor's controlling and manipulative nature. The more he learned, the more determined he became to shield Mari from her ex-husband's grasp.
He discussed his findings with Sheriff Reed, seeking guidance on how to proceed. Arden suggested, "I think we need to get the word out to the entire community to keep an eye out for anything suspicious."
Reed nodded, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "That's a good start. We should also make sure Mari is keeping detailed records of any unusual occurrences or threats. The more evidence we have, the better our chances of stopping Victor in his tracks."
Armed with a plan, Arden set out to put his ideas into action. He coordinated with the quirky and loyal residents of Whispering Pines, enlisting their help. He also purchased a set of security cameras she mentioned she wanted, intending to install them around Mari's property for added surveillance.
As the sun began to set, Arden found himself standing on Mari's doorstep, cameras in hand. When she answered the door, her eyes widened in surprise. "Arden? What's all this?"
He held up the cameras. "I'm here to install these around your house. I want to make sure we have eyes on every angle just in case Victor or his goons try anything."
Mari stepped aside, allowing him to enter. "I don't know how to thank you, Arden. You're going above and beyond."
As he worked to set up the cameras, Mari assisted with reading the directions which he firmly believed weren't needed.
Once the cameras were in place, Arden and Mari settled in for a cup of tea, the events of the day weighing heavily on their minds. As they sipped the comforting brew, they found themselves opening up to each other, sharing their fears and hopes for the future.
"I meant what I said earlier, Mari," Arden said softly, his eyes locking with hers. "I'll always be here for you. No matter what happens, I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe."
"I know you will, Arden. And I can't begin to express how much that means to me."
As the evening drew to a close, Arden reluctantly said his goodbyes, the promise of a new day and a strengthened bond between them lingering in the air. He knew that the road ahead would be challenging, but with Mari by his side, he felt ready to face whatever obstacles came their way.
