Chapter Twenty
~ Remy ~
"Is that everything?"
It had taken us an entire week to get all this stuff up to the cave. Part of that time had been spent going into the nearest town and buying the supplies we would need. The other part was just trucking it up here.
Vanya nodded. "For now."
I looked at the pile of supplies we had brought into the cave with a bit of skepticism. How could we possibly need more? We"d brought sleeping bags, food, basic supplies, and emergency supplies. There were flashlights, candles, and lanterns for Cindy, and firewood, first aid kits, cooking pots and utensils. There were even changes of clothes.
Vanya and I had gone through the place and taken every green stone we"d found and packed them away in his duffle bag, which was now hidden in one of the smaller cave rooms.
What else was there?
"If we"re going to be up here long-term, it would be a good idea to get more supplies hidden in here. I also want to do something about the entrance, hide it a little better."
That at least I understood.
"We should transplant some bushes to hide the entrance and the space between the rocks. Also, if we made the entrance smaller, maybe stack some rocks in front of it, it would also help hide the opening."
"How would we get in then?" Vanya asked.
"Just make the hole big enough for us to get in when we"re in our wolf form. That way, even if we are followed, no one would be able to get in but us."
Vanya"s head cocked. "That might actually work."
"Of course it will." I smiled smugly and wagged my eyebrows. "I thought of it."
Vanya let out a small snort.
"Wait, what about Cindy?" I asked. "She won"t fit through the entrance if we make it wolf size."
"We"ll make it a little bigger. Cindy is small enough that she should be able to fit through the new hole. A full grown man won"t."
We started walking back to camp, taking our time because it really was a beautiful walk through the woods. "Are you worried about Brad still?"
"To a point," Vanya replied. "It would be stupid to think he"s permanently out of the picture. And he knows where the camp is located. If he somehow gets out, I have no doubt that this will be the first place he will come."
"I"m more worried about someone finding out what he is," I admitted. "If he shifts or they find something abnormal in his blood, they might start asking questions, questions that could lead to us. Brad wouldn"t hesitate to throw us under the bus to save his own skin."
"Maybe we should look into some sort of early warning system."
I frowned. "Like a perimeter alarm?"
"Yeah, something like that," Vanya said. "Something that would warn us if someone was headed our way. We could put one down by the vehicles and a few throughout the woods."
"Do they make things like that?"
"They do." Vanya chuckled. "I might need to contact my father to get some military grade devices, but that shouldn"t be too hard."
They might not be that hard to get, but would they work?
"I know we"re doing this for our safety, but are we being too paranoid?"
"No," Vanya answered with conviction. "One, you can never be too paranoid. Two, we"re dealing with a situation that has never happened before, at least not that I know of. Protecting ourselves is the only way we"re going to survive."
"I wish that we knew more about what happened to us."
Vanya"s arm wrapped around my waist. "We"ll figure it out."
"I hope so."
This life had been thrown at us in a glowing green explosion. Were there others out there like us? I didn"t know. Was this a permanent or temporary change? I didn"t know that either.
I had no idea what the future would hold for us.
What I did know was that from the very beginning, Vanya had been fighting at my side. He"d been protective, caring, and willing to step into this new world with me.
And maybe that was enough.
