Chapter Eleven
~ Vanya ~
It took me a moment to realize what had just come out of my mouth, but by the time my brain engaged, I realized that it made perfect sense to me. It felt right to claim Remy.
"You are mine," I said. "If Brad has a problem with that, then I have no problem feeding him my fist."
Those words felt just as right.
I couldn"t explain the feeling that welled up inside of me as I said them. I"d almost say there was a sense of pride, but that couldn"t be right. There was definitely possessiveness, though. A ton of it. The mere idea that someone had laid their hands on my Remy made me want to pound them into the ground.
I weirdly had a desire to bite him...again.
"Do I get a say in this?" Remy asked.
My jaw clenched as I tried to not growl at him. "I think it"s too late for that."
"I think you"re right." Remy grimaced as he reached up and rubbed the bite mark I had left on him. "I have this..." He shook his head.
"Have what?" I questioned.
"It"s stupid," he mumbled, his gaze dropping away from mine.
"Tell me."
Remy huffed. "I have this overwhelming urge to plaster myself to you, which isn"t too much different than I"ve always felt, but this feels like if I don"t I might die."
His eyes suddenly widened as if he realized what he had said, his face flushing a beautiful rosy red.
I was elated on the other hand.
I tightened my arm, yanking him as close as he could possibly be to me without being in the same clothes. I had no idea why that admission made me feel so good, but I was going with it. It was probably the only thing about this whole mess that made sense to me.
"I"m okay with that." I leaned down closer to him and whispered in his ear, "I"ve always wanted you plastered all over me."
Remy blinked at me, his mouth slowly dropping open.
I smirked before turning Remy towards the door and then giving him a little push. I didn"t let him get too far from me. As soon as we were inside the cabin, I pulled him back to my side and walked us over to one of the chairs in front of the fireplace.
I chuckled when I heard Remy"s high pitched—yet muffled—whimper when I pulled him down onto my lap. I wasn"t sure what this feeling was that was flooding through me, but it might have been pride.
I"d never admit to it, of course.
"So, as we were discussing before Akio and Carmine joined us, we"ve all noticed that something happened to us the night before last. We"re not sure what it was, but we know it had to do with that green meteor."
Akio raised one eyebrow before pointing to me and Remy. "Is that why this happened?"
I wasn"t sure how to answer that. Yes, I had always been attracted to Remy, but no, I never acted on that attraction until last night.
Was I sorry it had happened?
Not one damn bit.
"Yes and no," I decided to say. "I"m sure it had something to do with it, but not everything."
Akio"s almond colored eyes rolled. "Well, that"s as clear as mud."
I wasn"t going to explain further.
Well, I might explain things to Remy when we were alone, but that information was strictly for him. No one else. It really wasn"t anyone else"s business that I"d been wanting Remy for a long time, but was never brave enough to claim him.
"So, we"ve compared notes and a few of us are a little more special than we were two days ago." I glanced at Akio specifically. "What about you?"
Akio glanced away.
Not sure that was an answer, but whatever.
"Remy and I both transformed into wolves, which I can honestly admit I never thought would happen, not even in my wildest dreams, but I"ve done it a couple of times now." I peered around to the small group of people sitting in the cabin. "Anyone else?"
Pretty much every hand went up, Akio"s hesitantly.
"My sense of smell is increased, my sight has improved to the point where it"s like seeing in daylight even in the middle of the night, and I seemed to have grown about three inches taller and a bit wider according to my brother."
"I don"t think I"ve grown any," Remy stated, "but I do have a better sense of smell and improved sight."
Carmine cleared his throat before saying, "I"ve been feeling a bit more...I don"t know, aggressive? I"m usually pretty laid back, but I was ready to rip into you when you barged into my cabin."
His brow suddenly furrowed as he frowned. "But the second you stepped into the room, instead of aggression I just felt the need to do whatever you said." He shook his head. "It was weird."
"I felt the same thing this morning when Vanya barged into our cabin," Hudson said. "I was all set to fight because someone was breaking into my space until I saw him and then I felt an overwhelming urge to roll over and show him my belly."
"Yeah." Carmine nodded. "That"s it."
"You"re right." Hudson"s chuckle was nervous sounding. "It was weird."
"We were talking about that earlier," Remy pointed out. "In nature, there is always an alpha wolf that leads the pack. Maybe Vanya is the alpha of the pack?"
"What pack?" Akio asked. "There is no pack. We"re just a bunch of university students that got infected with something when a green meteor exploded in the night sky. How does that make us a pack?"
We were all a little freaked out about this so I could understand Akio"s sentiment, but it still rankled a bit.
"While I wouldn"t recommend going back into public until we fully understand what is happening to us," I said, "I won"t hold anyone here that doesn"t want to be here."
"We"re supposed to be back to campus in five days," Yeri stated. "Since you and Remy are the only ones that would really worry about me, and you"re here, I can stay."
"I"m not going back until I am positive I won"t turn furry and bite someone." Remy shuddered when I growled. I hated the thought of him biting anyone but me. "I don"t want to end up as someone"s science experiment."
"You know I"m sticking around," Hudson stated, but his eyes weren"t on me. They were on my little brother.
I breathed in deeply and then decided to deal with that later. I had bigger things to deal with right now than whatever was going on between the two of them.
"Carmine? Akio?" Remy asked. "Are you two sticking around?"
Carmine nodded. "I"ll stay."
"I guess I could stick around a little longer," Akio said, "but I reserve the right to leave whenever I want to."
"When you leave is up to you," I stated. "I just ask that you let one of us know first so we don"t worry." I gazed around at the others. "I also think we need to keep this between us."
I shuddered to think what would happen if the general public ever found out about us transforming into wolves. Remy was right, we"d end up as someone"s science experiment, probably the government.
"While I agree that we need to keep this between us, we may not be the only ones involved." Remy pointed toward the front window. "The three cabins on the other side are all occupied, remember?"
"Do we know if they were affected or not?" I asked.
Remy shook his head. "I didn"t notice anything different about Charlie when I saw him yesterday, but I didn"t know there was anything to be worried about either. Brad, however..."
I clenched my jaw as anger raged through every cell in my body. "I"ll deal with this Brad guy."
"You can"t bite him," Remy said.
I glared at Remy.
"You can"t kill him either."
I snorted. "I promise nothing."
Remy laughed and leaned into me as if I hadn"t just threatened someone"s life. He probably thought I was joking. I was not. If Brad took a single threatening step toward Remy, I"d rip his throat out.
"We really need to find out if the others were affected," Yeri said. "If they are, we need to figure out what we"re going to do. Levi can probably be reasoned with, Brad is just plain psycho. He won"t listen to anyone."
"Why did you invite this guy up here if he"s such a jerk?" I asked, feeling totally confused. Maybe it was my being older and having seen a fair bit of the world, but I tended not to want to go on vacation with people I didn"t like.
Remy jerked his thumb toward my little brother. "Ask him."
Yeri huffed. "I didn"t want to, but Brad overheard me talking to Carmine, telling him about the camping trip, and one thing led to another, and they ended up coming with us."
I felt like that wasn"t all of the story, but it wasn"t worth pursuing right now. Again, I had bigger things to deal with.
I glanced down when I heard a grumble come from Remy"s stomach. When I looked at his face, it was flushed red. "I guess we need to think about eating something as well."
Remy smiled weakly as he nodded. He had eaten not too long ago, but I was pretty sure we were all burning calories at a faster rate right now. Might have something to do with what was going on with us because I was hungry, too.
"Okay, Remy and I will get some stuff we can cook out on the barbeque. Why don"t you guys go rouse the others and have them join us?"
"Should we say why we want them to join us?" Akio asked.
"No, don"t say anything to them right away. I want to observe them a little bit first. I don"t want to bring this whole meteor mess up if we don"t have to."
If they showed no signs of being transformed like we were, I"d just kick them out and send them home. The fewer people that knew about this, the better for all of us.
As everyone got up and started heading for the door, another thought hit me. "If you feel like you are going to go furry, get to your cabin. Like I said, if the others are not affected, I don"t want them to know about this."
They all nodded their agreement so I grabbed Remy"s hand and led him out of the cabin and then over to ours. I quickly pulled him inside and shut the door behind us.
I waited until the door closed us before grabbing Remy"s jaw and turning his face toward mine. I slammed our lips together, forcing my tongue past his lips, devouring as much of him as I could get.
It was possessive and crazy and I loved every damn second of it.
"Stay away from Brad," I snarled after lifting my head, but it was a quiet snarl. Sort of. I tried to make it quiet. I didn"t want to frighten Remy with whatever was going on with me.
Remy snorted. "Like I want to be near that asshole. You do remember he attacked me the last time I saw him, right?"
Oh, I did, and I would be keeping a very close eye on him.
"Just stay away from him."
"This whole dominance thing you got going on is sexy and all, but I will stand up for myself if I feel the need."
I waited for a moment before replying, wondering if that weird growl was going to come again, but it didn"t. "I"m okay with that."
Considering how much rage had built up in me every time someone disagreed with me, I was a little surprised by that. It seemed Remy was the only one I didn"t get mad at.
I really hoped that didn"t continue. I was a pretty even tempered guy most of the time. This new level of aggression was new to me and I could only attribute it to the changes I was going through. I hoped it settled soon because I worried I might attack someone if they pissed me off enough.
"Come on." Remy climbed off my lap. "We should get outside and join everyone else."
As much as I hated the idea, I knew he was right.
I got up and went over to the refrigerator. I gave it a quick look before grabbing some steaks, corn on the cob, and whole potatoes. I handed the potatoes to Remy.
"Can you wrap these in tinfoil?" They"d cook faster that way. I was going to cook the steaks and corn directly on the grill.
It took about ten minutes to get everything prepared and on trays to take outside. Hopefully it wouldn"t take that long to get the grill up and running. It was a firewood grill due to our location. I had no intention of packing in charcoal or fuel canisters. I"d already packed in enough.
I don"t know what I had been thinking when I decided to retrofit my great-great-grandfather"s cabins, but this wasn"t it. Of course, I never imagined being transformed into a four legged furry beast either.
Life was weird.
