Chapter 62

DYLAN
Three weeks later, I was sitting at my desk, staring at my computer. Even though Bryant Security wasn’t officially involved in the Haqani Army case, I was curious about what had happened after the raids.
With Ryan’s approval, I’d called the FBI’s field office. They wouldn’t tell me anything about the terrorist group. However, I discovered that Special Agent Liam Nelson was still on assignment. I hoped that meant he was with Alex’s brother, but I just didn’t know.
I opened another tab on my computer and searched for news articles about the raids on the buildings in Iraq and Chicago. Nothing. It was as if a big black hole had split the world in half, and no one was saying anything.
Hailey, my personal assistant, stood in the doorway. “Alex Quinn is here to see you. He’s not listed on your meeting schedule.”
My eyes widened. Alex was the last person I expected to see.
“Dylan? ”
I blinked, then focused on Hailey. “Sorry. It’s okay. I’ll go and see what he wants. Is he in the lobby?”
“He is. Are you feeling all right?”
If you don’t count a pounding heart and sweaty palms, I was fine. “I’ll be back in about twenty minutes. If anyone wants me, they can call me on my cell phone.”
As I walked downstairs, I tried to imagine why Alex was here. He wouldn’t have come to Boulder unless it was important. Something must have happened to his brother. It was the most logical explanation for his unplanned visit. But if that were the case, he could have called Bryant Security instead of driving here.
Before I stepped into the lobby, I took a deep breath, straightened my jacket, and walked calmly down the main staircase. The Holmes family didn’t settle for second best. And Alex Quinn, for all his wonderful qualities, would always be second best if he couldn’t trust me.
