Chapter 50

ALEX
Walking into the hospital, I moved quickly across the main reception area, heading toward the elevators. Jeremy walked beside me and Connor followed closely behind. Instead of enjoying my time away from Sunrise Bay, I felt like a criminal being transported between prisons.
Something wasn’t right. From the moment I saw my bodyguards this morning, they’d been tense, double-checking every aspect of the drive into Boulder. We’d taken two vehicles to the hospital—not because they wanted to give me time on my own, but because it gave us options if something happened.
They couldn’t know about the email I sent to the terrorists. But, if it wasn’t that, I didn’t know what had put them on alert. Maybe I was overreacting. What I planned on doing today was plain crazy, but I couldn’t think of another way of stopping this madness.
Jeremy stood behind a group of people waiting for the elevator. His gaze swept across the crowd, then returned to Connor. They didn’t need to say anything for me to know they weren’t happy.
Being part of a crowd, no matter how small, wasn’t the best situation to be in.
The elevator doors pinged open, and everyone jostled inside. My appointment was on the second floor. When the doors opened, I squeezed out of the elevator with Jeremy and Connor and walked toward my doctor’s outpatient clinic.
As we moved down the corridor, I checked the layout against the map I saw this morning. While my bodyguards sat in the waiting area, I’d see the doctor, then head toward the nearest exit. With any luck, I’d be at least thirty minutes away from the hospital before anyone realized I was gone.
My only concern was Dylan. If either Jeremy or Connor called him, he might guess where I was going. If that happened, he could arrive at my house about the same time I did. And if he realized what I was doing, Dylan wouldn’t have any choice but to do what he’d been trained to do. To stop me—using any means necessary.
