Chapter 9
CAM
‘I’m tired, Daddy,’ Cam said, smiling as the pair of them stood outside the Eagle Ridge Ranch house and looked up at the stars together. ‘But I don’t want the day to end. It’s been everything .’
‘It certainly has,’ Max replied, wrapping his jacket around Cam’s athletic shoulders. ‘It’s cold out. But I love looking up at the clear night’s sky. It makes me realize how small we are, and how big the universe it. I actually love it. It reminds me to be a good person, to do the right things, no matter how small they might seem. Does that make sense?’
‘It does,’ Cam answered. ‘And I messaged a couple of the other acrobats at the circus and… it’s good news. There was a mass walkout from Majesto’s because of Tobias. It turns out that he’d been bullying a ton of people. And when the circus’ investors found out about the walkout, they decided to fire Tobias.’
‘So… does this mean you might want to go back there?’ Max asked, his tone even and calm. ‘Because I’d understand that. I really would.’
Cam giggled.
‘But if I went back, how would we be like Mr. and Mrs. Jenson?’ Cam asked, rolling his eyes. ‘No, I’m here for good. With you and Java. And Tinsel too. Eagle Ridge is my home now.’
‘And acrobatics?’ Max enquired.
‘I’m thinking maybe I teach it to the community,’ Cam replied. ‘Young, old, whoever wants to try it. It’s not all highwire craziness. A lot of it is just about stretching, moving, and having fun. I think people might really want to get involved.’
‘I really struck lucky with you, didn’t I?’ Max laughed. ‘And here was me thinking I might have an extra employee for the diner! I’m kidding obviously. I think it’s a superb idea, and people will love it.’
‘Room for two more?’ Axel enquired, walking out onto the decked area with his boy, Arlo.
‘Make that four,’ Kipp added, Dale by his side.
‘Actually… six,’ Marshall laughed, holding hands with his Daddy Zane as they walked up to the others.
With the Littles all in their most snuggly, cozy, and adorable Christmas onesies and the Daddy’s looking smart and equally cozy in their plaid pajamas, it was a wholesome scene and the perfect snapshot of Eagle Ridge Ranch’s very first Christmas – the first of many too.
And as a shooting star burst across the sky above, each Daddy and their Little held one another’s hands and felt nothing but joy from the tips of their feet all the way up to the top of their heads.
‘I love you, Daddy,’ Cam said, going up on tiptoes and kissing his rugged Daddy Max on his cheek. ‘I love you more than a million and one shooting stars.’
Cam had found his perfect Daddy and settled into his dream life – and he had done it at the most wonderful time of the year too.
Merry Christmas from all at Eagle Ranch!
