Epilogue

I stoodoff to the side of Knox and Larkin’s wedding reception, watching all the kids dance and pop bubbles from the bubble machine by the DJ. Emily and Jackson might have been new to the crew, but they fit right in, and all us Madigans adored them like they were blood.

Dad’s pool of grandkids was growing, and he liked to remind me that I was next in line. I’d just laughed. I had a championship season to worry about. A relationship could come after I retired—with a few heavy rings on my hand.

But I was happy for Knox. Since everyone was dancing, he and Larkin sat together at the bridal party table, lost in their own little world. She was gorgeous in a long, cream-colored dress, and the way my brother looked at her, I knew this was it. They were end game.

I’d known, when I met her that first day at Knox’s barbecue, that she was something special. And I was glad for Knox that he’d found his happily ever after. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, I knew he got lonely here in Cottonwood Falls.

It wasn’t like that in Dallas. There was no way to be lonely when you were the leading quarterback in a professional football league. No, I was constantly surrounded by teammates, girls who wanted to get with a pro, and in the off-season, my family. That was enough for me.

Luckily, I’d signed onto the team in Dallas, giving me a chance to get back home on the rare day off. But my mind was on this season. We had a real chance at winning the whole thing, and after this wedding, I’d get back to training, to the next game.

I’d have to be more focused than ever to lead my team to a victory.

Nothing could distract me from that goal.

I’d been the first professional football player from Cottonwood Falls, and now I’d be the first one to earn a ring. I wanted to show everyone in this small town what was possible when you put your mind to it and didn’t let anything take your eyes off the prize.

A pig ran squealing past me.

But first, to make sure this damn pig didn’t ruin the reception.
