Epilogue
Katie
T hree months later we’re in my parent’s backyard, exchanging real vows in front of a Justice of the Peace.
It’s lovely.
Shelby is my Maid of Honor.
My dad beams with pride as he walks me down the aisle and gives me away to Vander.
We have a small wedding, not huge and super fancy like my sister’s off the hook society wedding that was featured in Vogue magazine, but small and intimate. This is how I like it.
Well, my dress is custom made by a designer friend of mine who is up and coming and I love her fantastic creations. But it’s still simple and has the possibility of being dyed and later used for other functions in the future.
Spartan Shield is in attendance and a surprising amount of Vander’s family, considering it took them a whole month on a spaceship to arrive. I’ve discovered that I really like his family and get along with his parents well, despite us all being from two different species.
All the jurors are here, including Alisha and her handsome plus one date, as well as Nelson and his wife because I’m not the type who holds grudges.
We plan on posting our formal wedding pictures on my Instagram. And we are giving out extra pictures and a small interview to People’s magazine. Between these two announcements we hope this will keep the media happy and far away.
We exchange vows and when the pastor gets to the part where he’s about to tell us to kiss. I do something totally unexpected and pull out a positive pregnancy test.
This morning, I threw up and worried that I was sick with the flu. But then my sickness passed and I felt perfectly fine afterwards. Obviously, something was up. I ordered my mom to get me a stick to pee on and sure enough, I was pregnant already. There was a general wave of happiness and hugs and kisses between all in attendance, including Vander’s mother.
We agreed to keep it a secret from the men so I could surprise Vander later. I decided to spring it on Vander as a wedding gift, right there at the end of the vows. In a way it makes me feel like our baby is already there with us, which is nice because I consider this marriage a symbol of us becoming a family.
Vander takes the stick in his hand, a puzzled look on his face.
“It’s a positive pregnancy test.”
His looks at the stick, then back up at me. I swear his eyes look watery. “Does this mean?”
“Yes, I’m pregnant. Probably about two months along. Congratulations, Vander, you’re going to be a dad.”
He pulls me close for one of his amazing kisses.
“May I present Vander and Katie Best and their new offspring on the way, baby Best.”
There is laughter and clapping from the assembled crowd.
“Love you,” I say as I give Vander a kiss on his check, missing slightly and catching a bit of scratchy beard.
He squeezes my hand in his. “I love you too, Katie Best. Until days turn into time.”
I hope you enjoyed Vander and Katie’s story!
