SAVANNAH

FEbrUARY

I sit at the restaurant, nerves getting the better of me as I wait for Tori and Avery. The weekend has finally arrived that the Shockwaves are in town to play the Fusion, and we get to meet in person. I’ve enjoyed getting to know them over text and a few FaceTime calls for the past couple of months. Having a few new friends who know what it’s like to be in a relationship with a professional player has been great. I’ve also made a group of friends with the other WAGs from the Fusion players.

“So sorry we’re late. I had to take care of something for work,” Tori says as she approaches the table. I stand to give both her and Avery a hug.

“It’s so nice to finally meet you in person!” Avery greets.

“Same, same.” I laugh. “I never thought this day would arrive.”

“Have you been waiting long?” Tori asks as they both take seats.

“Five-ish minutes, so not long,” I assure them.

“Oh good. I was worried we’d be later than that.”

“Good evening, ladies. I’m Charles, and I’ll be your server tonight. Can I start anyone out with a drink? Cosmo, cranberry mojito, or strawberry lemon drop martini, to name a few of tonight’s specials?”

“The strawberry lemon drop martini sounds perfect. Does it have a sugar rim?” I ask.

“Absolutely,” Charles assures.

“Then I’ll take that.”

“Same for me,” Avery tells him.

“What the heck, might as well do the same,” Tori tells him.

“Three drinks, any appetizers?” he asks.

We haven’t had a chance to look at the menu yet, so we all do so, then look up at one another and say “appetizer sampler?” We’re already so in sync that we fall into a fit of laughter at that.

“I have three strawberry lemon drop martinis and the appetizer sampler. Anything else to get you ladies started?”

“I think that will do it,” I answer.

“That was kind of freaky,” Tori says after Charles steps away from the table.

“It was,” I agree. We take a moment to look over the menu so we’re ready to order when he returns.

Watching the game with the wives of the opposing team is kind of strange. We were joined by Raven, who is married to the Shockwaves’ goalie, Blake, but also happens to be Camden Rowe’s sister. He used to play for the Shockwaves, as well, and was traded here last season.

“God, this is so strange,” Raven says. “I don’t know who to cheer for.”

“I can’t imagine being in your shoes.”

“Always your husband. He’s the one who keeps you pleased between the sheets,” Tori points out.

“I like the way you think.” Raven gives her a high five.

“When is your brother going to settle down? He’s such a good catch.”

“Lord if I know. He says he’s trying but no success yet.”

“I think he’s got something for the team trainer. Graham says the tension between them is through the roof.”

“Interesting. I like having an inside scoop,” Raven says.

“I don’t think anything has happened between them yet. But from the sounds of it, she’s the one who won’t give in to his attempts.”

“Good to know. I’ll have to do some digging. Sisterly duty and all that.” She smirks. “Did I hear correctly that you’re dating your brother’s best friend?”

“Yep,” I answer.

“Nice. Camden had a little bit of a bad reaction when he first found out about Blake and me, but that’s due to the circumstance and not necessarily because we ended up dating.”

“How so?”

“Blake and I met in Vegas while we were both there for bachelor and bachelorette weekends. We had a one-night stand, never exchanged last names, and went our own ways. I ended up pregnant from that one night, and a few months later, when I showed up to my brother’s game with his new team, I ran into Blake, and everything came to light. Camden had been pissed at the guy who knocked me up, and when he figured out that it was Blake, he punched him in the face. It was a tense situation, but it worked out in the end. We’re all happy now, and they get along great. You would have never known they had a moment of beef between them in the past with how they get along now.”

“Wow, that’s quite the history, and you’re married now?” I ask.

“Yep and expecting another baby.” Raven rubs her stomach tenderly.

“What!” Tori and Avery both screech at the same time.

“Surprise! Baby number two is on the way.”

“Damn, you guys are busy.” Avery says.

“I teased Blake that he’s got super sperm.”

“Congratulations, how exciting,” I say.

“Thanks, we’re excited. Have you and Graham talked about kids yet?”

“No, we’ve only been dating for four months. Way too soon to be talking babies and such.”

“I was already five months pregnant when Blake and I got together, so it’s not too soon.” Raven winks at me.

“We’re just enjoying our time together. I know if things continue to get serious, kids will probably be on the radar sooner than later, just due to his age.”

“How many years does he have left on his contract?” Raven asks.

“One, so we’ll see what he decides to do. I know he’s contemplating asking for an extension. Wants the end of his career to be on his own terms and not due to an injury.”

“That’s the way to do it. I’ve seen way too many guys' careers end due to injury, and it really does suck. I think the depression rates are higher among players who that happens to.”

“I hadn’t even thought of that aspect.”

“Yeah, it can be pretty rough on them.”

We talk as the game continues. Chatting with these ladies is so easy, and I love our connection. Even though our men are on opposing teams, we still have that in common.
