32. Ghost
We droveto Kenzie's boat house again to see if she was there. We were surprised to see two men who looked like they were working on the wrong side of the law. "What are you doing here?" I demanded as they walked out of her boathouse.
"That's none of your fucking business. Get out of our way," the curly-headed one said.
My elbow went into his nose, and my fist knocked him out. I swung around to the other one, and he was lying on the ground as Rebel stretched his fingers. Mika Hudson was behind bars. We were trying to reach Kenzie to let her know. I called the police, and they picked up the men.
"Are they going to keep trying to get Kenzie?" Rebel asked. "If this is going to happen, then she needs to stay hidden. You can get the phone company to give you the recording of her conversation with Todd, and she won't have to go to court. We'll let the media know that you have the phone conversation that will convict Mika Hudson for the murder of your brother," I explained. I didn't want the people hunting down an innocent girl.
We got everything we needed from the phone company. Robin kept a copy, and we kept a copy just in case. Robin gave the other copy to the district attorney's office.
"I don't know how to thank you two; I would never have been able to do this on my own. Now that we have the phone conversation, we can let Mika Hudson fry for killing my brother."
"Please keep us informed of everything. Maybe you and Kenzie can stay in touch with each other. She seems to need a friend, living alone on that houseboat," I said, shaking hands with Robin.
"I will keep you informed. I plan on staying in touch with Kenzie, even if she tries chasing me away. That is if she ever comes back home."
"I have to say, Robin, this has been the most interesting job I've been on since we started this business. I'm sorry you lost your brother; I know how it feels to lose a brother. I lost a brother in Afghanistan," Rebel said, hugging Robin.
I saw him standing on his front porch as we drove away. I couldn't wait to get home to Allison.
"I hope Kenzie is going to be alright," Rebel said.
"I have a feeling Kenzie can take care of herself," I said.
