Chapter 26. She Kneads Me

SAWDUST

Collin came to their house that night. Whitney was upset again. Sawdust could tell because her voice did all sorts of things. First it was low, then it was high. It was soft, then it was loud. He sat on her lap and, though she occasionally ran a hand over his back, she also flapped her hands around, gesticulating, and more than once put her hands over her face as if she was trying to block out the world.

Sawdust often found comfort in kneading his paws on a blanket or a soft cushion. Maybe Whitney would find the action comforting, too. He placed his paws on her belly and began working his claws. Rather than find the practice to be a comfort, she issued cries of pain, picked him up, and put him down on the floor. He'd only been trying to help! Couldn't she understand that?
