Naomi scrambled to her feet, her heart pounding. She had been waiting, waiting, waiting, going out of her mind with worry, convinced she'd been abandoned for good, but then suddenly she'd heard it. The familiar sound of the door opening and closing above. Her captor had returned.

Positioning herself to the right of the door, she readied her weapon. Slowly, she started to turn the chain, the heavy metal plate starting to spin in the air. She knew from experience that it took her abuser about a minute to open the secret door to their cell and when he stepped inside, she had to be ready for him. She had the element of surprise on her side, but still she had left nothing to chance, moving Mia's corpse close to the entrance, where it lay blocking his path. Her plan was simple: her captor would step inside, see the prone teenager in front of him and react. In an ideal world, he would bend down to check on her, but even if he paused, Naomi felt it would be enough. She could then let him have it, swinging the plate at him with all her might. Hopefully that would lay him out, but if it didn't, she'd be quick to follow up with more blows, a kick, a fist, whatever was required to subdue him. And then she'd run, carrying her heavy chain with her, attacking any obstacles in her path until she was free of this awful place.

The thought made her dizzy with anticipation. Her ordeal was nearly over. It had come too late for Mia, but she could get out, she could alert the police, she could bring the curtain down on this hideous nightmare. She just needed to be brave, to be focused.

She just needed to land one killer blow.
