Chapter 59

Chapter 59

‘Please don't do this …'

Naomi could barely speak, her anguish consumed by wracking sobs. But her captor paid no heed, gripping her by the neck with one hand, as he manipulated a laptop with the other.

It couldn't be true, it couldn't be happening, yet this nightmare was real. Naomi was standing in the storeroom just beyond her cell, caught in the powerful beams of two arc lamps. In front of her, next to the workbench on which the laptop was balanced, stood a video camera, its unforgiving eye pointing directly towards her.

‘I don't want this. I want to go home …'

Still he said nothing, releasing his grip now, as he punched a few more keys. And now suddenly a new voice rang out, tinny and cold.

‘Can't you shut her up? Nobody wants to hear her whining.'

Startled, Naomi looked up, taking in the multitude of faces on the laptop's screen. She was clearly the focus of a Zoom call, the participants of which generally seemed happy to be seen, to flaunt their identity, confident that they would not be exposed, unmasked or disturbed. The sea of male faces stared at her now, their expressions filled with anger, menace and a dark desire that made Naomi want to vomit. Her tormentors were of all ages, all sizes, all races, a morass of collective depravity, but even amongst the many faces, Naomi managed to pick out a red-faced, flame-haired blob and a tall, skinny, bald man whose intense expression froze the blood in her veins.

Now, finally, her captor moved away from the laptop, positioning himself directly in front of her. Terrified, Naomi instantly took a step backwards, but her attacker barely reacted. He was calm, collected, in total control.

‘Now this is very simple, Naomi. You do exactly what I tell you, when I tell you, and I'll let you live. If not …'

His eyes were ablaze with hatred, his malign presence filling the room, rendering any resistance futile. Naomi had no doubt that he meant what he said, that he'd kill her as soon as look at her. She tried to speak, to answer him, but no words would come out, just a futile, miserable gasp. Instead she nodded dully. Her whole body was shaking now, her senses exploding, utterly paralyzed by fear. She wanted to close her eyes, to make all this horror go away, to save herself from the torment she knew was coming. But even as she shut her eyes, praying for oblivion, a hard, Scottish voice rang out in the lonely cellar.

‘Right, then. Shall we begin?'
