25. Her Observation
Ali
A li glanced up at the observation room, where Julia had her eyes zoned in on them. Forget the fact that the surgeon was there, the one that did all the mastery techniques. Julia only had one thing to examine and that was how well Ali was working with Jo.
Ali stayed back, observing Jo’s every move, only breaking in when Jo had questions. Which, to Ali’s amazement, she didn’t have many. When they reached a touchy part of the procedure and the surgeon required all eyes on his field, Ali stepped closer to the bed, assisting as needed. However, she felt confident in Jo’s work and didn’t have to be the person that judged everything. That had to shine points on Ali and Julia could see that her teaching had already achieved greatness.
“Now, I’m closing up. Can you bring the light in a tad closer?” he asked.
Jo moved the light into his view, and he expertly stitched up the opening. The procedure went off without a hitch and Ali couldn’t have been prouder of Jo than she was in that moment. Jo sighed when he finished up and he turned to both of them.
“Thank you, ladies, for your assistance.”
“Thank you, Dr. Maples,” Jo replied. Ali could practically hear her sigh as she spoke the words. She recalled many times how she felt when she was learning procedures and there was always this heaviness that came with every move. Jo, however, seemed much more at ease than Ali recalled being back then.
Jo turned to her, and even through the mask, she recognized the excitement in her eyes. Along with that relief that had escaped through her breathing. “Great job, Johanna,” Ali said.
“Thank you! I’ll get her to the recovery.”
Ali went to the room to get washed up, and when she left through the double doors, Julia was standing outside waiting on her. “Julia, you startled me.”
She smiled. “I just wanted to commend you for a great surgery today. You were leading with excellence, and it’s clear that Johanna takes great direction. If the rest of the residents are this good, you will be that much closer to getting the job. Great job!”
“Thank you, Julia. I appreciate it.” She clasped her hands behind her and waited for her to walk away and turn the corner before Ali spun in a circle with glee. She couldn’t wait to see Jo and properly congratulate her on her technique. She started to take the elevator, but it took too long, and she deserted it and went for the stairs. She ran up them, a rush of adrenaline taking over her body and coursing through her veins.
She stopped just short of the nurse’s station, as May arrived back to the computer. She looked up and smiled. “How was the surgery? ”
“Couldn’t have gone any better! Do you know if she’s still in Mary’s room?”
May shrugged. “Just got back here. But…” She pointed. “There she is.”
Ali turned and nodded, then quickly walked towards Jo. “What’s going on?” Jo whispered.
“I need to see you for a minute,” Ali replied between clenched teeth. She led the way to the on-call room, carefully checking to make sure no one was around before pulling Jo into the room and locking the door. “You were so hot today,” Ali breathlessly replied, kissing her hard as she pressed her against the wall. Jo laughed but quickly slid her tongue along Ali’s as Ali slipped her hands up Jo’s shirt to caress her breasts. They hungrily indulged in the kissing, with Ali groping at Jo’s breasts, for what was at least twenty minutes but never long enough.
“Ali,” Jo breathlessly gasped, breaking from the kiss as Ali slipped her lips down to her neck. Jo splayed her fingers through Ali’s hair and just let the tantalizing sensations creep through both of their bodies. Ali squeezed her breasts, then wrapped her arms around her waist and pulled her closer. She kissed her neck hard. “Someone could walk in on us,” Jo whimpered.
“The door is locked,” Ali replied, laughing at how timid Jo had suddenly become.
“They could knock,” Jo admitted. Ali continued to kiss her neck before shifting her lips to Jo’s mouth and hungrily kissing her.
“Let them,” Ali remarked between kisses. Jo grabbed onto Ali’s ass and held onto her with Ali thrusting her tongue between Jo’s lips. They kissed, letting the salt of each other’s kiss linger with each daunting taste.
Ali slowly pulled her lips from Jo, and Jo’s jaw dropped. At that moment, Ali knew she wanted to risk every day they worked together as long as they had moments like that. Sure, it wasn’t practical, but it meant everything to her. She leaned in and gave another soft kiss before pulling back and turning from her.
“How can we leave it at that?” Jo asked, her breath hitching in the dark of the on-call room.
Ali turned and left a teasing grin. “Well, just makes things more exciting to get back to.” She winked and then turned and unlocked the door. Her mind was racing, but not nearly as fast as her heart was. She led the way back to the nurse’s station, where May continued to work.
May looked up and there was a slight smirk on her lips. “Where’d you guys go?” she asked.
Ali looked over at Jo, who was walking slower than usual. She turned back and shrugged. “Had to get more bed pans.”
May laughed. “That’s a new one.” She shook her head and went back to work. She didn’t even mind the teasing, as she knew that May would keep it all between them, but she was already ready for round two.
