THE PHONE CONVERSATION
“Brie Gruyere is in Meadowfall.”
Jag wanted to curse everyone and everything. “You were supposed to stop him from coming here.”
“He gave me the slip.” Taylor Henry coughed, sounding frustrated. “I was almost on top of him, but he stepped into the airport’s alpha restroom and left through the other exit. By the time I found him, he was on a different plane.”
Jag would’ve sniped at him, but the fact remained that Taylor, ex-government-agent, had given him a steep discount on this job and crawled out of bed sick to help him track down Niall’s captors. Troy had recommended him; Jag’s own brother hadn’t gotten much more rest since the last time they’d spoken.
“I would get my partner Nate to help, but he’s on two back-to-back shifts at the fire station right now,” Taylor said.
Jag breathed out. “Why’s Gruyere in Meadowfall?”
“I suspect that Niall might have been a favorite victim of his.”
“Fuck.”
“I’m on my way,” Taylor said. “Try not to leave Niall alone for too long.”
“I won’t. Thanks.”
“Stay sharp, Jag. We can’t underestimate him.”
