31. Colton

Chapter 31

Colton

I let out a sigh as the man tells me again how he didn't see the car parked on the side of the road. It's not his fault he smashed into the back of it and totaled both of the cars. After all, the other car was white and how was he supposed to see it in the snow?

"Sir, can you wait right here? We're going to call and see if we can get a tow truck out here."

"Of course! Yes, I can do that!"

"Great. Don't go anywhere. We wouldn't want you to get lost in the snow and some car plow into you because they didn't see you." I barely refrain from rolling my eyes at him.

Pecker snorts with laughter, then coughs to try to cover it up. "Sorry, there must be something in my throat. This dry air is killing me."

"Oh, I know. I wake up every morning with my mouth feeling as dry as cotton balls!" The man shakes his head .

Pecker and I nod, unsure of what else to do. As soon as we're tucked inside the SUV, I groan and let my head fall back against the seat.

"There was something in your throat, huh?" I twist my head to smirk at him.

"I didn't know what else to say," he chuckles. "It's your fault for being so sarcastic. He didn't even catch on to you making fun of him."

"Nope! How do you do that though? I understand the car is white and there's not the greatest visibility right now, but why would you drive that close to the sidewalk? There could be a kid playing in the snow."

"I'm fairly certain he was driving on the sidewalk, not the road. Did you see the tire marks? He's lucky he didn't hit a house."

"I'm sure he'd have an excuse on why he hit the house too." This time I don't stop myself from rolling my eyes.

I hate people who excuse away their screw ups. I'm all about owning up to my mistakes and learning from them. I'm fully aware that every choice I make could have a consequence and I could royally screw up.

I grab my phone to call the tow truck. I'm still trying to figure out who that other car belongs to, but I don't recognize it. If we can't figure it out, I'll have to start knocking on doors and asking people. Something I really don't want to do with how hard it's snowing.

I glance down at my screen to find it black. I press a few buttons, waiting for it to turn on, but I get nothing.

"Shit, my phone is dead," I groan. "Do you have a charger?"

"No," Pecker sighs. "Danny took mine yesterday and swore he was going to give it back. He didn't. I can call the tow truck though."

Pecker lifts his phone to his ear and talks to the company we use for towing. He laughs and jokes around with whoever answered the phone. He's so carefree and I wish I could go back to being like that. I feel like since I started dating Leslie, my life has been stressful. I know none of that is her fault, but it's getting overwhelming.

I'm not breaking up with her or anything, but I'd love if things could calm down. If Jimmy could show his face, that would be amazing. Anything so we could stop being nervous and move on with our lives.

Pecker has barely hung up from his call when his phone rings again. He smiles down at the screen and presses accept.

"Hey, beautiful?" Pecker says softly and I instantly know it's Sophia .

He has such a soft spot for her. I keep meaning to ask him if something more is going on between them, but I never seem to get the chance. Something always happens before I can ask. Lately, it's been something big. Something that throws my life into a tailspin.

Maybe while we're waiting for the tow truck, I can figure it out. I'd love it if the two of them started dating. I think they'd be perfect for each other.

"Colt's right here. His phone died, what's going on?" Gone is the sweet man and gentle tone I'm used to hearing when he talks to her, in his place is the tough cop who will stop at nothing to protect others.

His eyes lock with mine and I can tell he's nervous. Something is going on and we need to figure out what it is.

"What happened?" I ask, knowing we need to make a plan and fast.
