Chapter 35

CHAPTER35

“How long are you planning on pouting?” Sebastian asked the teenage girl sprawled out across his bed that had been mumbling, “They took the shower curtains too,” to herself for the past hour.

“I don’t like to put a time limit on these things,” Mikey mumbled sadly against the comforter, making him sigh as he gave up any hope of finishing the homework that Mrs. Blaine gave him before it was time to call it a night.

“You ready to talk about what happened today?” Sebastian asked as he tossed the highlighter on his desk with a sigh.

“I would rather pout,” Mikey muttered even as she turned onto her side so that she was facing him as she curled up into the fetal position, which he took as progress.

“Mikey, you can’t let this go on,” Sebastian pointed out as he stood up and made his way across the room.

“I don’t have a choice,” Mikey mumbled sadly with a sniffle.

“Yes, you do,” Sebastian said softly as he sat down on the edge of the bed next to her.

“What would you suggest?” Mikey asked as she reached over and grabbed the baseball off his nightstand that she’d left there the other night and began rolling it between her hands.

“You could tell someone,” Sebastian said, shifting on the bed so that he was facing her.

Nodding slowly, Mikey said, “And what exactly would I say?”

He opened his mouth only to close it when she added, “That won’t end with them turning it around on me and accusing me of bullying them again and being put back on probation? And before you say it, I’m not bringing Uncle Jason into this.”

Knowing better than to argue with the little pain in the ass, mostly because he would do the same thing if he was in her place, Sebastian said, “Then, we’re stepping in next time.”

“No, you’re not,” Mikey said, looking lost in thought as she worried her bottom lip between her teeth as she continued rolling the baseball between her hands.

“Yes,” Sebastian said as he reached over and plucked the baseball out of her hands, “I am.”

“Really?” Mikey asked as she looked at him. “And what exactly are you going to do to stop a group of teenage girls from making my life a living hell without making this worse or with one of us losing our scholarships?”

He opened his mouth only to close it on a sigh and a muttered, “I hate this.”

“Me too,” Mikey said as she reached up and ran her fingertips along his jaw, making him swallow hard. He watched her gaze soften as she murmured, “Always trying to save me, Sebastian.”

“Always,” Sebastian whispered hoarsely, barely resisting the urge to lean into her touch.

“You need a shave,” Mikey said quietly as she trailed her fingertips along his jaw, leaving a trail of goosebumps behind as beautiful green eyes locked with his.

“Mikey, I…” Sebastian began as he lost himself in her touch and found himself staring at her lips, wondering just how soft they were and-

“What did I miss?” Jonathan asked as he walked into the room and dropped down on the end of the bed, forcing Mikey to pull her legs back while Sebastian was forced to watch as Mikey dropped her hand away and plucked the baseball out of his hand.

He felt the loss of her touch like a physical blow.

She just…

Christ, she had no idea just how much she meant to him, Sebastian realized as he watched Mikey roll the baseball between her hands and once again looked lost in thought. If she had any idea what she did to him…

“Mikey’s a stubborn pain in the ass,” Sebastian said, wondering why it was so difficult to say a few simple words.

“We already knew that,” Jonathan said as Sebastian stood up, needing to put some space between him and Mikey before he said something that would ruin everything.

He couldn’t think straight when he was near her.

He just…

Christ, he didn’t know what he needed right now.

Why didhe always make everything better? Mikey found herself wondering as she watched Sebastian drop down on his desk chair.

She loved her mother and stepfather, adored her grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, and she knew that she could always go to them for anything and that they would always be there for her, but none of them made her feel the way that Sebastian did. No matter what was going on in her life, Sebastian was always the one that made everything better. As soon as she saw him, Mikey felt herself relax, but as soon as she was in his arms…

She never wanted to leave.

Over the past six months, the only thing that she wanted when Nicole and her minions decided to make her life a living hell was to go to him, knowing that he would make everything better, but that wasn’t an option. Not after everything that he’d been through. Sebastian deserved to be happy and there was nothing on this earth that was going to make her do anything to ruin that for him.

So, every time Nicole and her minions did what they did best, Mikey forced herself not to react, hoping that they would grow bored and focused on getting ready for tryouts. But sometimes it wasn’t enough and the only thing that she wanted was to go to Sebastian and-

“This is going to be so much fun,” Jonathan said with a satisfied sigh, drawing her attention to find him watching her with that deeply disturbing look in his eye that she’d caught him using on Sebastian.

For a moment, Mikey didn’t say anything as she watched the teenage boy who had been going out of his way to torment his brother, which really wasn’t anything new, but normally Jonathan let everyone know why he was screwing with someone’s head. The fact that he hadn’t said a word about why he was going out of his way to piss Sebastian off was very telling, Mikey thought as she considered Jonathan while she rolled the baseball between her palms, noting the unholy gleam in his eye as his gaze flickered between her and Sebastian.

“You want to tell me what you’re up to?” Mikey asked, watching as Jonathan’s gaze shot back to Sebastian and turned calculating.

“And ruin the surprise?” Jonathan drawled with a sad shake of his head. “I would never be able to forgive myself.”

Blinking, Mikey said, “You know that I have no problem hurting you, right?”

“You do seem rather violent,” Jonathan murmured, looking thoughtful as he shifted to get comfortable.

“That’s because she is,” Sebastian drawled as he looked up from the file on his lap to level a glare on his brother.

“What are we talking about?” Mathew asked as he walked into the room and dropped down on the bed next to Jonathan.

“We’re debating where to hide Jonathan’s body,” Mikey said, her gaze flickering between Jonathan and Sebastian as she found herself wondering if this had anything to do with the weird looks that he’d been sending her over the last couple of months.

“We figured that out years ago,” Jessica said as she walked into the room and-

“You could have just asked me to move!” Mathew snapped with a pained grunt when his back hit the floor.

“This seemed easier,” Jessica said, shrugging it off as she released her hold on her brother’s ankle and climbed onto the bed next to Jonathan.

“It usually is,” Mikey mumbled absently as she glanced from Jonathan, who was watching Sebastian with that unholy gleam in his eye, to Sebastian, who was once again mouthing, “I will kill you,” to his brother.

“What did we miss?” Jessica asked, ignoring her twin brother’s glare as he dragged himself off the floor.

“Your brother’s up to something,” Mikey said, narrowing her eyes on the teenage boy in question before shifting her attention to Sebastian and noted that he couldn’t quite meet her gaze before adding, “Both of them.”

“They usually are,” Jessica said, shrugging it off at the same time that Sebastian said, “We’re not up to anything,” still not quite able to look her in the eye, Mikey absently noted as her gaze flickered back to Jonathan, who was now doing his best to appear innocent.

“You know what? I think I’m gonna go home now so that I can pout in peace,” Mikey said, not really in the mood to try guessing what Sebastian was hiding from her today.
