23. Adam
Minos can't have a mortal soul, blah blah blah. We would never have tried to destroy a soul, blah blah blah. This wasn't our fault, blah blah blah. No precedent for such a thing, blah blah blah.
Adam mostly tuned out all the hubbub that erupted after Yah left. He snuggled into his demon. Huh, Minos really was his demon. And he was really Minos' human. Because he was, like, apparently his soul or some such thing. Or they shared a soul? Or they had each other's souls? Adam wasn't really clear on the details.
And really, what did the details matter? They couldn"t be separated. Ever. They could go wherever they wanted. Sounded like heaven to him.
Speaking of… "Can we please get the hell out of his place? I'm not alive anymore, but I think all this blinding white is still gonna give me a migraine," Adam complained.
Minos chuckled, utterly ignored all the apologies and questions being yelled at them, and walked through the doorway and started going down the stairs. The door firmly shut behind them, blocking out the Leadership Team and their drama (thank demons and god and Yah and Luce and whoever else).
"Oh, we are gonna have fun giving them some sensitivity training, Minos. Maybe we can make them cold call souls to see their satisfaction with their experience. Like telemarketing and customer service all rolled into one," Adam chuckled darkly.
"But also, they really need to loosen up. Like, we need to make them dress differently from each other and make them do some bonding time in Limbo or something. Make them take the different departments out for team morale. And of course, I'm still pretty pissed, so some torturous corporate retreat is totally in order."
Adam would think on it. If anyone could get the Leadership Team to shape up at least a little bit, he was confident he was up to the task. This was the afterlife, and Adam sort of thought it should be a little better than actual life. Wasn't that the point? At least for good souls.
His musings were interrupted when he noticed they were once again in front of Minos' home.
Afterlife physics. He would never get the hang of them.
They walked in, and Adam hopped down, but as much as he was ready to throw his clothes off and get fucked by his demon, he realized that Minos had been awfully quiet. Even for him. And that was saying something.
He tugged Minos over to the couch, pushed him down, and sat on his lap, at which point Minos promptly began rubbing his butt.
"Mmmmm, that's more like it, Big Guy. But you've been totally quiet."
"No more than usual," Minos replied.
"Uh, yeah, more than usual. And I'm apparently your soul or whatever, so don't try that shit with me, Mister. What's up? Were you worried? It's ok to be worried. I was totally worried, but I knew you'd come. I knew we'd be ok. Because I don't know what the hell this whole soul thing means, but I feel you."
Adam took Minos' hand and placed it over Adam's chest, his hand on top. "I feel you inside me. And apparently I always will."
"Yes," Minos muttered. "You are apparently stuck with me. For all eternity."
Adam almost jerked back at that. Apparently his Minos had some surprises for him.
"Stuck with you?!?" he repeated, practically shouting the words. "What the fuck, Minos? I am not ‘stuck with you!'"
Minos smiled at Adam's air quotes, but it looked tired.
"Explain. Now," Adam insisted. Because if Minos didn't want Adam as his soul or whatever, Adam would be crushed. But he didn't think that was what was going on here. His big guy seemed… unsure of himself. It was not a look Adam liked on him.
"You are a shining soul. Pure, bright, creative. You are light in the darkness. I am… unfriendly,"—Adam chuckled at that—"grumpy, not talkative. I am a deep, endless well of scowls and grumbles. That is what you will be stuck with for all eternity. I cannot change who I am."
Adam took Minos' face in his. "Listen. You are my grumpy, scowly, unfriendly, not talkative demon. And those are some of the things I love the most about you.
"I love that you're all grumbles and scowls but I can make you chuckle. I love that you let me do all the talking, because in case you hadn't noticed, I love talking. I love that you're the strong silent type. I love that you will absolutely destroy anyone who bothers me or upsets me, but you take care of me utterly and completely. I love being your light in the darkness.
"You let me be me. You let me be as crazy or talkative or sex-starved or sleepy or judgmental or cheery as I want to be. You're here for me. I know you would do anything for me. You support me. Like, literally support me by carrying me around half the time," Adam laughed.
He stopped long enough to kiss his demon. "I love you. I will always love you. I don't know how or why this soul thing works, but I think it shows we are literally made for each other. I am stuck with you for all eternity, and thank fuck for that, because it is the one thing that went perfectly right in death for me."
Adam leaned back, looking into his demon's eyes. Galaxies were there. And they were all filled with love.
"I love you Minos. You are my eternity."
"As you are mine, Adam. You are my soul. I love you."
