Chapter Ten

Iris

I hated leaving Bessie in the lurch, but it was to her benefit as well. She was in danger while I was under her roof either for working or living, and it made leaving easier. A little. She’d been so good to me. I swore I would do anything I could to thank her for her kindness as soon as I was in a position to do anything for anyone.

But as I climbed into the back seat of the car the dragons sent for me, such a time seemed very far away. The driver was big and strong and looked like a bodyguard more than a chauffeur, and that took a bit of the edge off my nerves. We arrived at the airport before the jet landed, but with this man whose biceps stretched the sleeves of his black T-shirt at my side, Killian would have to have balls of steel to try to do anything. In the private section of the airport, there had also been more security than I’d expected.

Not to mention it would be in public. Which I didn’t think he’d be willing to try.

Still…

“That’s them coming in, now, miss.” The driver pointed at a dot in the sky. “We can proceed outside to the waiting area.”

“All right.” My voice broke a little, but nerves were certainly understandable under the circumstances. To save my baby and myself, I was making an extreme change, more extreme even than the one I’d made to run away initially. “Thank you for being so nice and helpful.”

“It’s my job, but it’s been a pleasure as well. I’m glad to be able to help you.”

The jet was growing larger in the distance, and my palms were sweating. “I hope I made the right choice.” I wasn’t aware I’d said it aloud until the driver replied.

“You did.”

He sounded so sure, and I really didn’t know how much of the story he’d been filled in on. We’d chatted a little along the road but nothing about my situation. It was amazing how reassuring he was anyway. I focused on the jet as it glided down, wheels touching down on the runway. I’d never flown before, and somehow a smaller version seemed like a riskier way to start.

But as the jet slowed and came to a stop right in front of us, I straightened my shoulders and lifted my chin. Planted my palm on the curve of my belly. We’ve got this, little one. I have to trust my instincts, and they are the opposite of Killian.

The driver, whose name I never had gotten, patted me on the back and hefted my luggage, starting toward the jet. The door opened and a set of stairs extended to the ground. “Let’s go, miss.”

As we approached, a man appeared in the doorway. He ducked his head before descending the stairs, followed by another of equal or maybe even greater height. If I hadn’t already known they were dragons, I’d have guessed immediately. The royalty of the shifter world, they were not only big and bad but also had eyes that blazed as they focused on me, sending shivers down my spine and heat into my core.

They approached me, walking with such grace, I felt immediately like a major klunk and hoped they wouldn’t be put off by me. But instead, they took my luggage from the driver and asked me for my phone and car keys. I don’t know what I expected. A hug maybe? This set off alarm bells.

I hesitated, phone clutched in my fist. “Why?”

“Phones can be traced, and we need to give you one with more security. One that cannot be discovered unless you flat out give someone the number.” Keir held out his hand.

“It’s a burner…I thought they were safe. But somehow he got the number.”

“It’s not that hard if you have a little tech skill or someone in your circle who does.”

“I didn’t think he did, but I suppose anything is possible. In any event, here. Take it.”

Keir accepted my phone then plugged a device into it. He left it there for a moment then disconnected it. “I downloaded the data, which will give us something to work with, and now we don’t need this anymore.” He handed it to the driver. “Here, Simon.”

Phoenix said, “And the car keys, please.”

“Do you think my car has a tracker or something? Like in the movies?”

He shrugged. “We don’t know, but the car and phone are the easiest ways to cut the connection. Unless you’ve changed your mind and want your ex to know where you are.”

“Gods no!” I exclaimed. “Here.” I fished in my purse and found my key ring. “But what are you going to do with it?”

“We have a plan, but I don’t want to waste any more time getting you out of here, so, Simon, here you go.”

“Simon?” I said. “Thank you again, and I hope you aren’t putting yourself in any kind of danger by helping me.”

His eyes twinkled. He was a shifter but not a dragon. Something else. “I’ve been in a lot worse situations than hiding a few things. And from what I’ve been told, I wouldn’t be unhappy if the bastard did show up. It’s been too long since I took out an enemy.”

“Okay. But be careful?”

“Yes, miss.” He took the keys and phone and climbed into his car. The dragons led me toward the jet.
