Chapter 30

Chapter Thirty

Nyx

I ’m too late.

Iris’s heart beats for the final time as I step from the shadows and into these cursed woods.

The Unseelie lord is slaying creatures left, right, and centre, not seeming to care which court they belong to, his arms wrapped around the poor broken body of my love.

When my eyes lock on the arrow, I fall into a deep, cold rage. There will be time to track down those who need to pay. In the meantime, I need to be with Iris. I need to see her pale, dead body for myself.

A female is whispering her apologies at the lord’s side, muttering something about not being able to heal her and that it’s too late.

When they sense my presence, the two fae look up, their eyes widening in fear and disbelief. The female scurries back and lowers her gaze, but the male only tightens his hold on Iris.

“You can’t take her.”

I’ll give the male credit, he looks as though he would truly fight me. He wouldn’t stand a chance, and he has to know that, but he would fight for her anyway. I admire that, but today is not the day to push me.

“You cannot tell me what to do.” My voice is deep and resonates with my power. He lowers his head. “Release her.”

He shuffles back, and I’m finally able to look down at Iris. She appears so peaceful like this, so long as you don’t look below her neck that is. The ground rumbles with my fury that someone would dare to hurt her like this.

The gods put everything in my way to stop me from getting here in time. They got their wish. Iris is dead.

It’s a good job that I am death incarnate then.

Allowing my gift to loosen, I release my shadows, the heavy presence between my shoulder blades telling me my wings have formed in the process. The world shudders as though in fear of my mighty power, and it should. I could wipe everything away with a simple thought.

Closing my eyes, I reach for the familiar feeling of Iris’s sweet soul. I find it almost immediately. She is still attached to this plane thanks to her mate bond, meaning she can’t fully move on yet. Coaxing her forward, I scoop her physical body into my arms as my power guides her spirit back.

This breaks the rules, but I don’t care. I would burn this world for her.

I am the god of death, no one is going to keep Iris from me now.
