DEIRDRE

D eirdre pointed out some of the local landmarks as they drove. "That's the Smith farm. Meanest bulls in the whole county, which is saying something. That restaurant got shut down for food poisoning. That building was a roller-skating rink for about two years when I was a kid. That family kennel bred and trained collies. There's a pullout on the hill up there where high schoolers used to go to make out."

Juan checked his rearview mirror and put on the brakes, glancing sideways at Deirdre. "Want to go make out?"

Deirdre grinned at him, and he swung the car around to make the turn so quickly that she squealed and held onto the grab bar.

It was still midafternoon, which was a very odd time to be making out in a car, but Deirdre wasn't sure they would make it to Madison. After four grueling months of falling harder and harder in love with this man—her mate! —knowing that she could finally have him was like sitting at the top of a rollercoaster ride, waiting for the cars to finally drop.

They were constrained to the front seats because of all her moving boxes, but Deirdre didn't care. She only cared about getting Juan's pants off him, taking his cock in her hand and kissing him until her mouth burned. It was awkward, navigating between the seats, trying to get her pants down in the narrow space, to get positioned to where she could lower herself down upon him at last.

But what about their whole relationship had not been awkward and graceless? A married woman with a kid and a mate. A best friend she didn't want to hurt. An honorable man who didn't want to break up a family.

But when he was buried in her at last, Deirdre knew that this was where she belonged. It was as if every part of him perfectly fit every part of her. The way he reverently touched her, the way he whispered her name and held her hips…it was all exactly as it was supposed to be.

She clenched around him in a wave of joy and release that was months in the making, the perfect culmination of all her stress and confusion and doubt washing away in the soul-deep understanding that she was meant to be here, now, with this man, forever.

But maybe not in this car…

As they both climaxed and came shuddering down from the heights of pleasure, Deirdre realized that her leg was cramping from its uncomfortable position trying to get purchase without hitting the pedals, and her head had knocked the sun visor, and she had to laugh as she collapsed into Juan's arms.

He laughed with her, cradled her close, and kissed her. It was like Dean's kisses, and yet completely different, and this was the first time Deirdre had thought of him since she left the house that had been theirs .

That life was behind her now, and she couldn't be sorry for any of it as she kissed Juan back. She wouldn't be who she was, or have her darling son, or even have met Juan and realized what love could be without everything she'd been through.

"Let's go home," she said happily. At last.
