Daredevil

I sat away from the others, seething. Goddamn woman thought all I wanted was to fuck her. Good riddance. I was a fool to think she might be special. I'd taken a long walk after our yelling match outside the bathroom. Since getting back, I'd been staying to myself and watching everyone else have fun. It was growing dark and soon the adult fun would begin.

As I scanned the backyard, I saw Moose and the other Regulators. They were huddled together with their heads together. Who I didn't see was Shain. She must be off sulking somewhere still, I thought acidly. Turning my back to them, I went in search of another beer. It was maybe a half hour or so later when I overheard a conversation between Howler and Clutch's old ladies. What they were saying stopped me in my tracks.

"Moose is pissed. He wants to leave and go home," Aurora, Howler's woman, said.

"I know. Maybe he'll calm down. She had to leave," Fendi said.

"Bullshit. It was how he and the others were acting. That's why she left with Laz. He came to get her. You know he'll do anything for her. They need to stop this crap. One of these days, she'll leave and we'll be lucky if she ever comes home again."

"I know but he feels like he has to protect her. You know why. They're all protective but especially him. After what happened when she was little, can you blame him?"

My heart began to pound. Were they talking about Shain? Was she gone? If she was, I knew I was as much to blame for her leaving as Moose was. Turning around, I went in search of him. I'd get my answers from him. It took me a good fifteen minutes or so to find him. When I did, he was getting another beer out of one of the coolers. He was alone. I marched up to him. As he rose and saw me, his lip curled.

"What the fuck do you want?"

"Where's Shain?"

"It's none of your fucking business where my cousin is. Get away from me."

"Like hell it isn't. I want to know where she went."

"Why? So you can try your hand at getting her in bed again? Forget it."

"How many damn times do I need to tell you I wasn't trying to get her to sleep with me? Jesus Christ, give it a rest. I need to talk to her. Are you gonna tell me where she is?"

"She's not here. She left," was his short reply.

My heart sank at his confirmation. "Where did she go? How did she go? She came with you."

"No shit. I know she did. As for how, she called Laz, and he came and got her. Where they went, who knows, she's probably staying with him."

"Who the hell is Laz? Where is he staying?" I barked out. All thoughts of saying to hell with her flew out the window. No way she was getting away from me.

We were attracting an audience, not that I gave a shit. He was glaring harder at me. He didn't answer. I was about to grab him and shake the answers out of him when Sin and Carnage came striding up with frowns on their faces.

"Daredevil, mind telling us what's wrong with you two? You're yelling at a guest," Sin reprimanded me.

"Yeah, Moose, what the hell?" Carnage snapped.

"He started it!" I ranted.

"No, I didn't. He did. He chased Shain off. He wouldn't leave her alone," Moose yelled.

"I was just talking to her. You were the one spouting a bunch of crap about me trying to get in her pants and she got mad and stormed off."

We were so busy snarling and yelling at each other, it took a minute for it to register that Cuffs had come up and was whispering urgently in Sin's ear. Whatever he was telling him put a worried look on his face. My argument was forgotten for a moment as I inquired of my president, "What's wrong, Sin?"

He gave me then Moose stern looks. "Carnage, Moose, Daredevil, I need to see you inside."

He didn't wait for us to agree or ask questions before he walked off. We followed him. He led us to his office in the clubhouse. Taking a seat, I waited for him to blast me. However, why would he have Cuffs here if that was what he intended?

"Moose, where did Shain go?" Sin asked, surprising me.

"She left with Laz. Why?"

"I don't know or care who ran her off right now. What I care about is that Cuffs just got a call informing him that a young woman had asked an officer to call here and ask for Moose. She said her name is Shain."

"A cop? Why would a cop call Cuffs, and why would my cousin have him call for her? She has a phone," Moose bellowed, coming up out of his chair. Carnage pressed him back down.

"He called since Cuffs is a detective and he knows he's one of us. Shain didn't call you because she was being carted off on a gurney. It seems her and the man she was with were hit by a drunk driver on the other side of town. They're being transported to Tenillo hospital," Sin informed him.

"What? Is she gonna be okay?" I was the one bellowing now. As I came out of my seat and Cuffs tried to push me down, I struck his hands away.

Sin held up his hands. "That's all we know. We'll round up those who haven't had too much to drink and we'll take you to the hospital. We'll be able to find out what's up when we get there," Sin answered.

"I'll get my people together. The women are sober and I know a couple of the guys are. Go wait in Howler's car," Carnage ordered Moose.

I stumbled to the door only to draw up short when Moose hollered. "He's not coming with us."

I swung around to face him. "Like hell I'm not. You and what army are gonna stop me?" Before he could say anything, Carnage bundled him outta the room. I went to follow them but Sin called me back.

"Stay. We need to talk."

I gave him a pleading look. "Sin, I need to see her. I've gotta make sure she'll be alright."

"We'll go. Just tell me what you were doing all day with her? Was Moose right? Were you trying to get her into bed?"

I wanted to snap at him but I held back. "Let me ask you this. When you met Lyric did you want to sleep with her?"

"Of course I did, but that wasn't all I wanted."

"Exactly."

An expression of understanding spread over his face. I saw the same on Cuffs'. Sin came to his feet. "Let's get our asses to the hospital." He didn't need to tell me twice.
