Chapter 34 - Lex
We are back in Manhattan after spending two days in the hospital in LA. The good news is, Nic has made a full recovery and our baby is doing just fine. The bad news is she hasn't yet said that she loves me. I've avoided talking about shifters and the baby and anything else that might cause her to panic. She has been through an ordeal. I don't want to add to her stress. I'm confident that once she is ready, she will talk about it with me.
I asked her to move in with me. She didn't say ‘no' outright, which gladdens my heart. She said she'd consider it, but she also said she needs to be in her own apartment for the time being. I understand where she's coming from and I totally respect her decision. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.
I'm done with the work for the day. Before I head home, I'm going to see Nic. I never did give her the flowers.
A brief car ride later, I'm once again standing outside Nic's apartment. I knock and once again, it is Penelope who answers the door. I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.
"Lex…"
The expression on her face is enough to tell me that something is wrong.
"Where's Nic?" I ask shortly, my worry making me sound abrupt.
"She asked me to give you this," she says, handing me a note.
It just says—
Lex,
I'm going away for a few days. I'll let you know when I'm ready to talk to you.
Love,
Nic
My lips twist into a small smile when I see the note. Perhaps all hope is not lost.
