Chapter Four

Stephanie

As I read Alphie’s email for the third time, I’m now thoroughly convinced that the person who wrote his first two missives did not write this most recent one.

“Still, even if he had someone help him write it, it speaks to how much effort he’s put into it.” I barely notice anymore when I talk out loud to myself. Working from home for years has managed to lower my inhibitions.

Speaking of lowered inhibitions, that makes me think of beautiful, big-boobed Ashley, whose figure was so perfect she showed no embarrassment while waltzing through Alfie’s living room with an audience. I can’t even imagine having that much body positivity. Must be nice.

I’m anxious, pacing from one end of my tiny living room to the other as I debate my options.

On one hand, Alfie was an utter ass who treated me with disrespect and stole my self-esteem.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” I quote Eleanor Roosevelt to myself. He didn’t steal my self-esteem. I allowed it.

On the other hand, he’s not only apologized three times, but he’s given me a substantial raise.

“What’s the worst that can happen? If he’s an ass again, I can quit.”

Besides, no other employers are clamoring to hire me. I’ve only had a few Zoom interviews, and none of them seemed interested.

After stewing about it all evening, I eventually come to the only reasonable decision available. I’ll accept, but just to yank his chain, I’ll hold out for an additional five percent increase.

He must not be used to negotiating, because his eager response only a few minutes after I send my offer, tells me I could have asked for more. Damn.

I’m eager to have you on board, Stephanie. When would you like to start? The first thing we’ll do is draw up a contract about boundaries. I imagine working out of my home, even part-time, will come with challenges.

I never want to put you in an uncomfortable position again, so, as stated in an earlier email, I will refrain from having guests over on the days you work out of my house. Otherwise, let me know anything else you need that will help you feel relaxed in my home. We’ll discuss it on your first day.

I look forward to working with you.

He seems like a changed man, um, changed male. Though that remains to be seen, I must admit I feel comfortable about my new job. Let’s see how long it takes for him to make me regret my decision.

If possible, I’d like to start tomorrow, is my brief reply.
