Chapter 47

The sun had set a while ago; three moons hung in the sky and unfamiliar stars glimmered in the darkness. The breezes didn’t stop with the coming night, and neither did the temperatures drop much.

It had been one day, and I loved it here. The air was fresh. Silence was everywhere. It was beyond comfortable.

Kal pressed his lips against the nape of my neck. “What are you thinking?”

“Is it always this warm?”

“Mainly yes, this is our winter. Most of our planet consists of mountainous ranges, canyons, trees, and beaches. We have a very moderate climate and growing seasons during the entire cycle. One of the reasons why we’re such a strong empire is because many people tried to conquer us.”

“Hmm.” After a moment, I sighed. “We have to see your family tomorrow, don’t we?”

“If you are up for it.”

My thoughts went back to his older brother who was protecting us, pushing back Kal’s parents so I could have a moment to gather my thoughts. Kal trailed the tip of his tail up to my hip, tickling me.

“Are you worried?” I asked.

“About them meeting you? No. They will love you as much as I do.”

“Then are you worried about what they’ll do?”

“No.”

I turned in his embrace to face him. Kal hovered over me, wings spread, and his tail brushed the swell of my ass. I ran my fingers along the edges of his wings, the leathery texture smooth to the touch. I never thought I would come to love wings or a tail, but I did. They were a part of Kal.

“You’re not?” I asked.

“No,” Kal repeated. “As you said, we’ll run away. You and me forever.”

I cuddled close, the warmth of his scales seeping into my muscles. “Stay with me.”

Kal whispered in my ear, “Until the sun implodes.”

The room was dark with only a soft blue light coming from the console. Kal slept behind me, his breath on my neck and his arms loose around me, wing over my shoulder and tail hooked around my ankle. It was late, but I had no idea of the exact time. Then again, I wasn’t exactly sure how the hours worked here to the ones on Earth.

My bladder clenched. I had to pee. Bad. I wiggled out of Kal’s grasp and went to the expansive bathroom. After I took a leak, I put on a pair of sweatpants and my hoodie before snagging my tablet from the floor.

“NAID.”

An unfamiliar silhouette appeared. A twinge started in my chest at the sight. I missed my NAID. I’d known it wouldn’t be her who answered, but I’d still expected her. She was on the Admiral Ven. Dr. Qinlin hadn’t even given an estimate for when NAID would be transferred to Kal’s system, but it shouldn’t take too long.

“Yes?” a monotone voice asked.

“Is there news coverage on my arrival?”

“Yes.”

“Can I see it?”

“What would you like to see? There is a live display on the palace currently.”

“From when I arrived, please.”

A woman that had bright red hair and green scales appeared. She was wearing sharp black clothes and stood in front of the palace grounds.

“We received word that Prince Kalvoxrencol’s mate, Seth Harris, has arrived. The landing pad was cleared of all personnel, and the palace has not released any more information on his arrival. Though sources from the Admiral Ven state Seth Harris arrived with a creature from his planet. We couldn’t get an image of the animal, but from witness statements, this rendering was made.”

A picture appeared on the screen that made me laugh. It was a rough cat-shape with far too many legs, like a spider.

“Already, the Vveki Government is demanding for its release. According to the spider legislation, no one is allowed to own spiders. They must reside solely on their home planet or in the reserve on Vveek.”

I skimmed the different coverages until I reached the live feed. The same reporter with green scales stood in front of the palace. “We have received word from an unnamed source within the palace that their royal majesties have not met Seth Harris. This could be a sign that they do not intend to reaffirm the bond.

“Prince Kalvoxrencol has long been established as the problem child of the royal family. It could be that he has not proven himself worthy to keep his mate. At this point, we can only speculate why their royal majesties have not met Seth Harris. It is customary for the meeting to take place the morning after the chosen mate’s arrival, and the reaffirmation to occur in the evening. Our reporters have not caught a glimpse of the human or the royal family arriving at the Grand Sanctuary, so the reaffirmation ceremony has not taken place yet.”

She continued to talk as the camera panned over to the palace, which had a few lights shining from the many windows. Unknowingly, I’d disrupted the traditional way this was done.

Arms came around me, and I jumped. Teeth bit my neck, then a tongue ran over the same place. “What are you watching?”

“News coverage.”

Kal reached around me to turn it off. “Stop.”

“What?”

“Worrying,” he said.

“I’ve never lived like this.”

“Like what?”

My eyes flicked down to the dark screen. “With everyone watching. No one cared about my existence before.”

“It will calm down after we reaffirm our bond. We’ll go to our country home, far away, and no one will bother us.” When I didn’t say anything, he continued, “Please don’t say no now.”

“What?” I tried to look at him, but Kal held me too tight.

“Please don’t ask to go back to Earth. Not now.”

I wiggled until Kal freed me so I could turn around. “Never. I want to be here. With you.”

He smiled, revealing his sharp canines.

“We should sleep. I have to meet your family tomorrow.”

“If you’re ready.”

I would never be ready. “I’m ready.”

“Are you sure?”

“No, but the reporter knew your parents hadn’t met me.”

“They shouldn’t. No one in the palace is allowed to speak to the press, not even us, without clearing it with Jalqyn who is in charge of press relations.”

“Well, they do.” I chuckled, thinking about the rendition of Lucy.

“What?” he asked, head cocked.

“They have a super inaccurate picture of Lucy. They say she’s a spider, which she’s not. Maybe that press relations person should release a real one.”

He took a picture of Lucy who slept on our bed with my tablet. Kal sent it somewhere before dropping the tablet on the floor. “He’ll handle it tomorrow. Now, let’s go back to bed.”

“We have to see your family tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow night?”

“I’ll take care of it.”

His tail coiled about my calf, his arms wound around me, and his wings covered me. I was completely surrounded by Kal, and I’d never felt safer in my entire life.
