Chapter 34
Kendra 20 weeks pregnant
A fter her urinalysis came back with normal hormone levels, we were ushered into a different room for the ultrasound. I thread our fingers together and squeeze, and she gives me a small smile. The technician enters the room and introduces herself before beginning. The screen turns on, and before long, I'm seeing our baby flickering on the screen before me.
I'm awestruck.
I swallow, staring at the image. Each finger. Every toe. We made them.
"You okay?" Kendra whispers, clasping my hand.
My eyes find hers, and emotion swells inside me. "Yeah… I'm good." So damn good.
The technician discusses the stats of measurements. So far, our baby is measuring on the bigger side. That's probably me.
"Do you want to know the sex?"
I glance at Kendra and smile. "Do we?"
She shrugs. "I think I want it to be a surprise."
That's more than fine by me. "Then let's keep it a surprise."
Today has been stressful. I want to know, but I'd rather us find out on our own time. Together.
The ultrasound tech nods. "Surprises are fun."
Kendra smiles and nods.
"Is there anything we should be doing to make sure she and the baby stay healthy? Anything we should be watching for? Anything with sex?" I know this isn't her doctor, but I feel like I should ask.
"The placenta has good positioning, everything looks normal and is on track measurement wise. You'll have to ask your OB some of those questions, but as long as you're feeling up to it, sex is fine."
"Good," I confirm.
The tech nods. "Mom is healthy. Baby is healthy." She smirks. "Sounds like Dad is doing pretty good too." The tech taps the keyboard a few times, and a printer below spits out a bunch of ultrasound pictures.
She passes me some tissues, and I wipe the clear gel from Kendra's slightly rounded stomach and resist putting my palm out to feel. I know the baby is moving right underneath my hand, I wish I could feel them.
"Have you been feeling kicks yet?" she asks us.
"I can feel them, but the baby has been a little quiet today. Sully hasn't gotten the chance to feel anything yet."
"Well, baby's still very active, just maybe not giving you those big kicks. I'm sure you'll feel them by tonight, especially if you have some orange juice and rest. I'm guessing Dad will be able to feel them in the next few weeks."
Dad .
