Epilogue

Ollie’s eyes followed the iron bars up fifteen feet before they reached the top of the gate. “Holy shit!!” he murmured. “What the hell have you gotten yourself into, cousin?” Running his fingers along one of the bars, he realized they were too slippery to scale, so he searched for an opening he could squeeze through. Walking back to the front of the gate, he eyed it speculatively. “It just might work,” he muttered.

Slipping his arm between a set of bars, Ollie wiggled and squirmed, finally getting a third of his body through. But then, no matter how hard he tried, the rest of his body remained firmly on the outside. Extracting himself from between the bars, he was hesitant to use his ability, but the image of his imprisoned aunt and uncle overrode any concern he might have had. After checking the area to make sure he was alone, Ollie summoned his power making it easy for him to slip through the bars and then hurried up the road, staying in the shadows as much as possible.

When he came around the last bend, Ollie gasped at the enormous house in front of him. Hesitating for a moment, he considered his options but in the end, decided he’d come too far to chicken out now. Striding up the front steps, Ollie searched for a doorbell, but finding none, he pounded on the door. When no one answered, he pounded again, but this time he also shouted his cousin’s name.

Finally, someone heard him and opened the door. The man was backlit which made it hard for Ollie to see his face, but that didn’t matter since his nose told him exactly who he was. “Theodore? Is it really you?”
