Chapter Seventy-Two
Lana
B rooke and Kellan are waiting for us when we return to my office, Kellan in yesterday’s clothes, yet Brooke is somehow wearing a new dress. She twirls to reveal a multi-colored skirt that fans out in a very revealing way. That flash of her red lace panties makes my head spin.
“What do you think?” she asks, hand on hip. “Teri made it. I paid her a quick visit last night and she hooked me up.”
“She’s speechless,” Pete says, when I can’t find words quickly enough. “That means it’s hot.”
My face warms up as Brooke moves her gaze back to me. “Is that what it means, Lana?”
“You always look incredible.”
Dress, or no dress. Preferably no dress.
She smiles. “Thanks. I like your skirt.”
I smooth it down self-consciously. “Thanks.”
“Those two are true mates,” an unfamiliar voice murmurs behind me.
“Shush, Rob,” Damian whispers. “It’s not our place to intrude.”
Oh my God. This is so insanely embarrassing.
Ezra just explained that Dr. Morgan could help us with Warren Corvina’s victims, while being a little vague about the details. It’s clear the guy is a bit weird, and I have no idea how that’s going to be helpful.
“Um, I think Damian’s ready to start decoding the files,” I tell them.
“Brooke suggested I could cover reception for you today,” Kellan says, stepping back while I open the office door. “I had a look, and the phone system is pretty basic. So, I’m willing to give it a try.”
“You’re a lifesaver,” I tell him. “That would be so great.”
I unlock the door and step back while Pete opens it.
Kellan smiles. “Anything to help.”
Pete holds the door open, and I gesture to Brooke to go first.
The skirt of the dress swishes and draws my attention to her ass instantly as she walks past me.
Pete totally catches me looking. I feel like such a pervert.
I let Damian and Rob back into the room.
“I’ll just set Kellan up and come back,” I tell Pete.
He moves to watch us from the doorway.
“I’ll log you into the reception email.”
Kellan nods. “Sounds good.”
I walk him over to the desk.
I go over the same steps I went over with Erika.
He nods along as I’m talking.
“Thanks for this. I owe you one.”
“Well, you can pay me back by spending the night with Brooke.”
I blink at him. “Um, what?”
His steady gaze tells me he’s not joking around.
“Please,” he adds. “Just think about it.”
“I’ll … speak to Brooke after this whole decoding thing.”
“You make sure you do that.”
Oh, he’s deadly serious.
I can feel my heart pounding like crazy as I walk back to the office.
Pete takes my hand when I get to the doorway.
He leans in, “You’ve got this.”
“I’ve got this,” I murmur.
We step into the office and close the door.
