Chapter Fourteen

F lick had helped him get showered and then left early for his shift. Cannon was in the kitchen sipping coffee and listening for any of the kids to wake up. Beth was crashed out on the couch in the room with the kids. Jesse walked in and picked up his cup.

He wondered what she was doing because she'd given up almost all caffeine because of Sparky. He didn't know why she called the baby Sparky, but it had stuck for him. She held the cup to her nose with her eyes closed and breathed in.

"Sparky better appreciate this because it is hell to not drink coffee."

Cannon bit his lip because Jesse sounded like the kids when they'd pouted last night at bedtime. Her eyes popped open and caught his smirk.

"You better wipe that smile off your face. I'm tired. I'm cranky and my feet won't fit in my boots or my other shoes today."

He wasn't sure what to say. Was sorry adequate for all the things she was going through?

"Umm, I know we aren't going for our checkups for a week. I'd love to pay for new shoes if you want to order them and have them delivered. Remi has big feet. Could you borrow hers until new ones come in?"

Jesse stared at him and her eyes filled with tears. Oh fuck, he did not want to deal with tears.

"I'm so sorry. What did I say?"

Jesse shook her head. "That was so nice and sweet."

"Well, I don't want your feet to hurt. Besides bigger shoes, do we need to check why they are swelling? Is something going on with the pregnancy?"

Jesse turned and grabbed a glass, then opened the refrigerator and filled her glass with apple juice.

"I think everything is okay, but I'll ask Stella if I need to have anything checked."

Not being able to help Jesse was bothering Cannon more than he thought it would. He hoped his being at her house wasn't causing added stress. Could stress make her feet swell? Maybe he'd text Flick and ask him. He sure wished Flick hadn't had an early shift and was still here. It was hard as heck texting with his left hand and arm in a cast, but he wanted to know.
