PROLOGUE

FIVE YEARS EARLIER

NICOLE

Dr. Marcus Hill is a good man—unlike most men of my acquaintance. He’s kind and respectful and devoted to his wife.

A sigh of envy leaves me slumped over the black lab table serving as my desk. We’re supposed to quietly study the microorganisms in stream water gathered by an earlier class, but I can’t help focusing on my professor and his wife.

Cora had knocked on the classroom door asking to speak with Dr. Hill, and after politely excusing himself, he'd hurried to her side, leaving the door slightly ajar. Their murmured words are muffled, but his calm tone is unmistakable, as is the comforting arm wrapped around her shoulders.

It’s nothing out of the ordinary—a husband reassuring his wife.

But I find it incredibly endearing.

Because the men in my family?

They’re an off-putting bunch known for their vices—gambling, drinking, women. Latching onto the worst possible thing and going overboard.

The Kennedys are full of alcoholics, workaholics… If you can add “-aholic” to something, my family’s probably claimed the title.

At least Liam chose to go all in for love. My brother and his girlfriend are so cute together.

“Sorry about that.” Dr. Hill re-enters the room with a lopsided smile, and I straighten in my seat. “How are we doing? Any questions yet?”

A couple of students raise their hands as I force my gaze to peer through the microscope in front of me rather than staring at my professor in admiration. One of these days, I wouldn't mind marrying a man like him, though I'm not sure how many of those exist in real life.

He's the only one I've met so far, and he’s taken.

Perhaps men don’t reach his level of maturity until they’re older? Glancing around at my peers—a group spanning from late teens to early twenties—the thought doesn’t give me much hope for the future.
