Chapter 31 - Draco

Mine, mine, mine…

That’s all I can think of as I stare into Lily’s eyes, glowing with anticipation as we fly over the island and make our way to the castle. Lily Turner is mine.

She doesn’t realize the implications of her last statement. Completely immersed in the moment we shared on the mountain, I’d felt compelled to take her back to the castle.

Not because I’m suddenly overcome by the feral desire that pools at my core. But because we’ve shared a profound moment that I cannot risk losing. Not only did Lily proclaim that she accepts me for who I am, she told me she loves me.

“You’re not gonna fall,” I assure her as I place my hands on her shoulders, gently coercing her to turn around. Her eyes grow wide with horror, but I’m determined to let her face this. “Trust me.”

Lily gulps as she tentatively nods. “I trust you,” she whispers as she releases my sweater and keeps her arms pressed to her sides.

I knead her shoulders when I feel her tensing, leaning at her ear to whisper. “You’re immortal now, Lily. But there’s a fire in you that burns brighter than you give yourself credit for. You’re fearless.”

“I—I am…” she says hesitantly before the ministrations of my hands on her shoulders ease her. She straightens her spine and clears her throat before dropping her gaze toward the ground. “I am,” she declares fearlessly this time.

Feeling her resolve strengthen with every breath she takes, I lean back and smile proudly. That pride swells my chest as she radiates the daring nature so innate to her.

I’d witnessed it before every time she stood up against me. Despite everything, I assumed she was just for being a human; she proved me wrong. And all those times she fainted, she was only suppressing the incarnate heroine inside of her.

The heroine to this beast who she made her hero. I am only a better man because Lily makes me want to be better. She forces me to see the world in a different scope, not as black and white as it had been for a thousand and two years.

It was my life that was measly, not her.

When I remove my hands from her shoulders, Lily turns around. The fear of falling has dissipated as she keeps her chin held high, eyes full of magnificent might.

Pressing a kiss at the top of her head, my arm tightens around her protectively. The very same protectiveness Id felt long before I knew what it meant. Essentially, Id been falling in love with her all along. “I love you too, Lily Turner.”

Lily twists her head toward me, searching my eyes. “What happens now?” she asks.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?”

“Will I—” she pauses, taking a hesitant breath. “Will I live here forever?”

“Of course,” I say, stroking a stray strand of dark brown hair from her face. “If thats what you want.”

As soon as I say this, a smile grows on Lilys face. “Id love that. I think Aurora Island has grown on me.”

I cock up a brow. “Is it really the island that has grown on you?”

“Hmmm…” she muses, face contorting as if shes in deep thought. “I mean… I havent seen much of it yet. But from the little Ive seen, I like it here.”

“I noticed how amazed you were when we were on the mountain.”

She nods eagerly. “Its the perfect place to soak up inspiration for my writing.”

“Ill arrange for a pergola to be built there. That way, you can go up there whenever you want to write.”

When Lilys eyes light up, pride fills my chest. My heart overflows with love—a feeling I never thought possible.

But after todays visit to Redmond, I cant help but wonder if shes considered all of her options.

“What about your family, Lily?”

The smile on Lilys face fades substantially. She drops her eyes almost shamefully, compelling me to look down into her eyes.

“I—I think theyll be fine without me,” she says tentatively.

“Are you sure, sweetheart? I noticed how sad you were when we left. You can still see them, you know?”

“What happens when I cant see them anymore?” Her eyes flit to her belly before she touches her cheek. “Or when I stop aging? Theyre bound to ask questions.”

I pull her hand from her face and interlace my fingers with hers. “Well figure that out when the time comes,” I assure her, pressing a kiss on her knuckles. Truthfully, I hadnt thought as far as that.

Only because Ive never had to face that dilemma myself.

But now that Lily is my mate, I have to consider what it means for her.

“Together,” I add. “Well deal with it together.”

Lilys smile returns, albeit faint, before she rests her cheek on my chest. She sighs contentedly, her body relaxing into me.

Thinking that shes fallen asleep, I whisper her name.

“Yes, my love?” she whispers back.

“Nothing,” I reply sheepishly. “I just wanted to tell you I love you.”

Her body shakes with a giggle. “I love you too, dragon man.”
