Blad. Named for the blood he"d spilled when captive. Now he was free and on another kind of mission. The kind that put his skills to good use.

Helena. Sanctuary was everything she"d ever known. And he, was about to destroy all that to make things right...

"I"m cold Helena."

She knew it was. It felt like they"d been cold for weeks no real warmth left in the world.

"I'm sorry baby girl, come here I'll wrap you up."

Their world was called Sanctuary for a reason. They had no enemies, it was a place of harmony and safety.

What need was there of an army?.... None…

They"d been on this new world for over a hundred years. Those that came with them to protect them gradually died out as they found they had no enemies or predators or things that went bump in the night and they didn"t replace them. Other jobs had more value to the whole.

There was no need for self-defence or weapons training. No need to learn strategy or fighting. They did not believe in it.

They had a sheriff in each community who spent more time riding, walking and chatting than actually having to arrest anyone. There was no legal system here. No judges. No solicitors or barristers. If a crime was committed, the community decided their punishment.

Usually work-related and no one she knew was ever seriously punished.

She"d never heard of any serious crime committed. People accepted their roles and juvenile high jinks were just that. It was a world of farming, of agriculture, of peace and a willingness to keep it that way. People seeked personal growth. Wanting to live simple lives. No one went hungry. No one was too poor to live.

Her family had described it as living like the "Armish" on the old world.

They didn't need an army. Until they did.

She'd never even heard it discussed, after so many years since the initial colonisation, her people hadn't expected to find they'd need one.

Coming from Old Earth on the colonisation program, they'd come seeking new land. With hope of a new life. To start again and do things differently. The colonists blamed greed for much of the Old Earth's problems. And were determined not to repeat it.

Expecting they'd be dangers; they'd found a world with hardly any at all. A very peaceful one that was in stark contrast to the Old Earth with its conflict and exhausted resources.

She could believe it when told the horror stories of its destruction.

Overmining, overpopulated, resources stripped, food production failing, the weather unpredictable, storms raged across the old world, as the ocean levels continued to rise. People died. The old, the young, the poor, the ill. Only those with credits or skills to survive did.

Cities of millions of people had collapsed.

It was hard for her to imagine any of that with their simple lives. No huge cities, no heavy industry lived here. But her people had signed on to mine for Earth Corp. 100 Years of minerals for a new life. Making tunnels that had become their emergency shelters.

She looked around in the darkness.

Had she found them?…. They needed help...
