Epilogue Two
Epilogue Two
BIG DADDY
They say age is just a number; my wife would agree. My knees, not so much. At fifty, I’m propped up behind my beautiful young wife, holding her trembling body as she screams out her pain, preparing to give birth to our fourth child.
It’s been eight years of pure bliss, crying, diaper changes, late-night feedings, and hotter sex than when we first met.
“Daddy’s here, baby girl; I’ve got you.” I kiss the shell of her ear as she cries, exhausted and ready to give up, but she’s so fuckin’ strong.
“It hurts, Daddy. I can’t do it anymore.” Our doctor and her nurses have long since given up being uncomfortable with our names for each other. If anything, they think it’s sweet now.
“Just one more strong push, Matilda. You can do this,” Doc Wright tells my precious girl.
“Come on, baby, once more for Daddy. I promise it’s worth it.” It always has been. She begs to quit until our little bundles are put into her arms after every birth; then, she’s in love, and the pain is forgotten.
“One more?” she whimpers. Our eyes meet, and I nod. “Okay. One more.”
A minute later, she’s being told what to do, pushing while screaming, and finally, silence before a shaky wail echoes around the room.
“She’s here.” I kiss Matilda’s cheek, my chest constricting with the amount of love I feel for this woman. “Our little girl is finally here.” Our first and only girl because Matilda decided four was enough. She wants to be able to spend some time with just the two of us when the children are grown, and far be it from me to deny her anything she wants.
As I get off the bed and they position Matilda to complete the procedure to ensure we have no more kids, I hold her hand and wait until I’m called to go to the nursery with the baby.
“A perfect little girl.” The nurse brings her over so my wife can see her, touch her, and cry over getting exactly what she’s wanted. “Dad, if you’ll follow us, Matilda will be done before we know it.”
“I love you so much, baby girl.” Kissing her, it’s hard to pull away when all I want to do is ravage her.
“Love you too, Daddy. Take care of our little girl.” Stroking her cheek once more, I nod before following behind the nurse.
“Dad! Is she here?” my oldest son, Parker, shouts as he comes running down the hall. The nurse laughs as she stops so he can see her, too. “Wow,” he marvels as his two younger brothers come trotting over, Coltrain right behind them.
“A granddaughter.” He grins from ear to ear. “Finally, another little girl to spoil.” He’s been waiting for this day since we had Parker.
“She needs a checkup, and Mom’s almost done. You guys can see them both in a little bit.” I keep my voice low, not wanting to wake the sleeping infant. I promised Matilda I’d do my best to make sure she wasn’t fed before the procedure was done. My wife loves to breastfeed almost as much as I do.
“I’ll take them to get some dinner. You guys want anything?” Coltrain asks as he gathers up the boys.
After giving him our order, I follow the nurse again. Waiting on the side as our beautiful little girl is looked over before I’m told to sit in a chair, and she’s brought to me. She nuzzles into my chest, seeking food, and I know I won’t have long until she needs to feed.
“Matilda is in recovery now; everything went well. They’re getting her suite ready, and you should all be together in about fifteen minutes.” The woman smiles before leaving me alone with the most delicate bundle of joy I’ve ever held.
When we’re finally called up to our suite, my heart feels fuller than it’s ever been. Matilda’s broad but tired smile has me melting into her side as our infant is brought in behind me.
“She’s hungry,” I warn with a grin. So am I, and she knows it.
We’re left alone to feed our daughter. I help Matilda into a comfortable position before she removes the top of her hospital gown. Massaging her breasts to help bring in some milk, she moans and closes her eyes.
“I always miss this part.” Her lips curve as she gazes at me.
“Me too, baby girl.” Leaning forward, I suck on each nipple, drawing the milk down before releasing her and turning to pick up our daughter, helping her latch on to Matilda’s swollen breast. “Just like her brothers.” I grin proudly. Our girl grabbed right on.
“I was thinking for a name…” My eyes lift to join hers. “What about Baby?”
“Baby.” I roll it over my tongue. “Yeah, I like it.” Her brilliant smile is one I hold in my heart for the rest of our days. Nothing is as perfect as this moment, or any after.
